Big shout out to ‪@SouthernCustomCC‬ for there tips and warning about this motor, thanks guys!
Here we are showing some of the highlights of our first build and ride with a YD100 engine kit.
We decided to place this motor on a 26" Roadmaster Granite Peak for now.
The bike and motor kit when together well, but we ran into some trouble when we decided to use the larger 56 tooth sprocket...
This build looks like it is going to be allot of fun after break-in.

I have discovered that the small spring on the clutch cable is not just to return the handle but more importantly to disengage the clutch lever from the bucking bar as the bucking bar is spinning and wears against the clutch lever if it is in contact with it...my bucking bar was mushrooming over on the outside and I was adjusting my clutch a lot (was lubed with grease)..I added the small spring and I did file down the mushrooming end of the bucking bar (which seemed soft) and heated it in a propane torch until blood red and dropped it in a glass of water (to hopefully temper it harder) and reinstalled...been a few runs and no more clutch adjusting...was it the spring or tempering? (the metal didn't seem to get harder on file test) and I really suspect the spring is reducing the bucking bar wear...the Chinese wouldn't include the spring if it wasn't needed for some purpose (anything to save a cent)...

Thank you for pointing this out! I don't think I would have discovered this on my own. But like you I knew they would not include it unless it served an important purpose. If I remember I will be sure to add this in the next comment reply section of a video. :)

@@LAHover Update >> the bucking bar in some engines is made out of soft low carbon steel...I cut a 28 mm length off of the back of a 8 mm drill bit (chucked it backwards in a drill and used a cut off wheel on a grinder while spinning the drill bit to cut it off flush and even) and replaced the soft bucking bar with this one...finally after a couple of adjustments (while it seated on the ball bearing) later, no more adjusting...I did order the replacement bucking bar (it is hard steel) but the drill bit is working fine so far...

I just put a normal 66cc on that same bike for my neighbor. i had to adjust and grease everything but it was the best bike walmart had for a motor. my neighbor has put about 500 miles on it and just had to replace the rear tire because it was bald. I had to open up the transfer ports with a dremel from bad casting. the motor broke 3 spokes even with the hub adapter. Welded the sprocket to the rim and no more issues. i plan on getting a friction drive for my full suspension bike soon. great job on the videos

Having built a few of these myself, I predicted everything you were going to say went wrong. Many of us have encountered each of these problems. I wish other build videos mentioned these things. You saved me time with your solutions! I just began a new build. Thank you for stopping me from sanding and epoxying the 1" hub adapter and hub! Hahaha, I was thinking the exact same thing. I didn't want to use a set screw because I figured I'd drill into the hub berrings, but I'm getting a little rub on the rear fork as well. Thank you for the tip about cutting the rag joint in half! I was going to trace out and cut /drill into a plumbing gasket or rubber door mat, but that is so much easier.

Thanks man! Ya it's crazy... On larger hubs (like coaster breaks) the adapter seemed to work well for me. But these tiny hubs combined with the torque of a large sprocket are a nightmare for the adapter...

Been watching your channel for quite some time and thank you for sharing your passion! I get a lot from it! Regarding the clamp-on adapter, i also was struggling with that for quite some time but finally looks like something worked for me which was using JB weld original. But not in putty form... doing the two formula mix. I sanded down both surfaces, added a liberal amount to fill the space between the 1in hub and clamp, let it dry for 24 hours and with a heater fan blowing at it to dry faster. One tip i discovered by mistake is let the JB weld spread all around the hub and on the sides of the clamp for maximum contact area and holding power since it all forms into steel. I'm using the 44-tooth sprocket (49cc motor) so I'm not sure if it will be enough holding power for the torque the 56-tooth sprocket demands but will try soon. Also I used JB Weld to fill the gap where the chain tends to lock up (thanks to your tip on doing that with a business card)

Bro, bought that muffler, and 99 percent sure, a piece of weld tore up my cylinder head and piston. The top of the piston looked like it was used for target practice! I should have checked better, A piece was rolling around when I got it, and it came out, but the motors vibration must have loosened more. Bang the hell out of those pipes! Great job mentioning that!! All of you're videos are very informative and entertaining! Thanks! ...GARY (Newbie 1 year, 2 bikes.)

Use Rubber mat cut as the spacers between the Sprocket and the spokes and inside retainers, instead of the stock spacers from the Kit. It allows for a truer sprocket and different thickness of Rubber can be used to get the sprocket off set. Good build and well explained.

I started using spray white lithium grease for the gears a year ago. You dont have to deal with the old grease buildup and possibly getting onto the clutch pads. Grease also tends to get flung off the gears and not even lube anything after a while.

Just did another kit on my bike and did allot of what you did.I bought the CDHPower magnesium 6-spoke rims and when I put the 56t sprocket and the 6-spd gear cluster on,they both hit the frame.I used nuts from an old rim as spacers on the inside of the frame and adjusted both sides.I have a 1" hub adapter that crushed 2 rims between the spokes before it slipped enough to bend spokes.Rag joint went back on 50t rim.

cool video...makes me want to order a kit... I have a 1 inch hub with the clamp on adapter. all I had to do was sand each half on the mating surfaces and its never moved...of course a bigger sprocket will put more leverage on the clamp but you could always drill the threads out and run a bolt all the way thru the clamp to get it extremely tight, in any case you want there to be a 1/16" gap in between the two halves

You make these builds look easy! I just had the same thing happen with the chain hitting on my Roadmaster. I grabbed another wheel from a Schwinn to make it work but that’s a great tip to get the gear closer to the rim. I kind of wanted to try one of those flex exhausts but I can’t tell if they make the engine louder or quieter. Intrigued to see it on one of your bikes and your thoughts.
@LAHover
@LAHover 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Aside from dealing with sprocket set ups that are different for every bike, they are easy builds. Bike Berry did a test with a bunch of different exhaust systems and the flex came in first place for noise to performance ratio. Slightly louder than stock. I cant wait to try it out and see how it does.

I’m building this same exact bike without the YD100 (PK80) These engines fit so nicely on this bike as well - every other build I needed to do so much modding that made the mounting look unclean. I took off all the ‘branding’ as well but I have all this residue that is taking forever to take off with WD-40. I’m using a hub adapter too... I hope I don’t run into the chain issue like you had - I’m using a different one from CDH power tho - It looks to fit and spin perfectly, But I had to dremel out the sprocket holes larger to fit the screws through🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I doubt you will see this since this video is older, but I think it would be worth a try to use some loctite 638 or 648 retaining compound when installing the hub adapters and give it 24 hours to cure. That stuff is ridiculously strong, and quite literally built to retain cylindrical parts.

If you want a good crankset I recommend ixf cranksets and going with a sealed bearing bb and going single speed on the crank, they're lighter and give you the option to run 2 sprockets but I only run 1 on the front and went to a single speed on the wheel and with a 16t on the wheel and a 32t on the crank it gives you more than enough to get the motor going

@@LAHover if I may ask a question. What has been your exp with shift kits? My biggest issue with motorized bikes is that even of they have a TRUE 100cc motor. A lot of speed/power and responsiveness is lost due to gearing (i.e one gear) I don't need super top end. But I know a 80cc dirt bike is totally different due to multiple gears. (But still tops out at 45 mph) I AM a mechanic so building the motor and porting / initial inspection of a kit is no issue. And I really want to get into the bike kits because it's a cheap hobby. But that whole lack of gears kinda hangs me up. I'll however admit that the idea of changing gears while the motor is turning gives me anxiety. As the chain is only so dang thick. And over time the edges of the chain will wear. Hoping you can provide some wisdom as bike kits ARE new area to me. It's been a pleasure. And as always. Keep your stick ON the ice. (and your bike OFF it) haha. Btw. Greetings from maine!! Hope the weather is awesome where you are.

@@LAHover also. Quick idea. I buy clone chainsaws of the stihl ms660. And one BIG thing with the performance of these saws Is the coil/carb. I DO wonder what would happen if you used say....a LEGIT coil for a bigger stihl or husky saw. They have what's called an "unlimited" coil. I can attest that they put out some serious juice without needing a better magneto. Also. The carb on a saw is made to REALLY dump the gas to the saw quick, and maintain a super flat acceleration curve at the same time. Begs the idea of a carb retrofit. Have you ever wondered what the difference would be with a butterfly style carb like a saw? Certainly a curious subject id say :)

Like your channel man. Can you tell me if the yd100 cylinder will fit on the stock 49cc kit? If not will the 66cc kit bolt on. I'm a motorcycle tech by trade but you seem to have done a lot of these kits and their isn't that much info doing google searches. I put one on a roadmaster walmart bike for my son but it's just the 49cc kit. Pretty sure the 66/80 cylinder will fit and then I will upgrade the exhaust and do some port cleanup once I get the bigger jug. Not looking for crazy power just a little more and little crisper throttle response. Thanks
@LAHover
@LAHover 3 жыл бұрын
the YD-100 cylinder has a wider stud pattern and will not fit a 66/80 or 49/50 bottom end. I do think the 66/80 cylinder and piston will fit the 49/50 bottom end but I can't say for sure. You would need to measure the stroke to make sure you kit the right piston. There is a 40mm stroke and a 38mm stroke.

To get the hub clamp to work there is a way to do it by drilling two 1/4 (choose your size, mm or SAE) holes directly through the hub on both sides and not through the axle then carefully thread the holes you made in the hub with the matching tap. Drill two holes in the clamp slightly larger, unthreaded, counter sink the the holes in the clamp so not much is above the clamps metal edge, chamfer, use hardened Allen bolts, do not use stainless steal it is brittle, place a washer under the bolts before tightening use some oil on the threads and the bolts, Tighten the clamp first to about 10 foot lbs then tighten the allen bolts down then tighten the clamp to full strength then return to the allen bolts and make sure they are also at full strength. Don't use loc-tight yet until its used for about 30 days and then you can use loc-tight on all bolts.

Could the small spring assist in tighter clutch discs lockup ? Havent seen these up close but when i do maybe itll be love @1st feel . Regardless of the headaches in the marginal quality dept im redy to go for it cause upgrades abundant and plentiful but also like the thought of the ktm but info seems scarce and wanna know more also everyone holds the firestorm80 T40 in favorable regards , will probably be my 1st in frame chain dr bike and will also get the 5.5cc head w lotsa cooling area w the kit . Aircooled will trouble me emotionally anyway even w extra large fins

The best I can tell is the small spring on the clutch cable is to aid the clutch cam in returning to neutral and prevent excessive wear on the cam and bucking bar.

I have a 1" hub adapter that i haven't used yet, but now i'm thinking i could have it welded, just need someone that can weld aluminum. Not sure how well that would work though. Though a couple beads could be used as a key if the weld beads are on the hub itself.. So if i can't weld the hub adapter on directly without damaging the hub, maybe i can get away with 6 beads that i can use as keys on the hub itself. Then i can just dremel out some very tight fitting "key holes/slots" on the hub adapter.

Question is do you prefer a triple 40 or the yd? Was thinking about getting a yd but can't modify with a high performance head. Is power any different?

I've got to say this is one of the best video's I've seen about these motorized bikes. Someone that really understands what's going on with these bikes. The only thing I was wondering is how close are these engines to 100cc are they? BTW like your dog.

It's not a wheelie popper, but it pulls through the soft ground better than my other trail bikes. It's only place it on the trail because it's slow as heck on the road... but on the trail where every tree, bush, rock, and log is flying by your feet it feel fast and can pull hard at mid RPMs

I just bought a 100cc motor off ebay for 75 dollars that looks to be a yd100 with a 2 piece cylinder/head top end. I'm hoping so because the head looks pretty big and has big fins. If so I'm thinking they make an Iron sleeve cylinder for 40 bucks.

Good job on the build, but I sure hope you have better luck with this motor than I did. For a brief time the motor seemed plucky, but there were heat issues that I could never quite get to go away, as well as a whole host of other problems like 4-stroking, the piston eventually smashing into the connecting rod and the inside of the cylinder being discolored. By it's last run the motor could barely take the bike to 10MPH. Quite honestly the worst motor I've ever owned, clocked up very few miles before I took it off and replaced it with the cheapest kit on eBay - which rendered the purpose of the upgrade from the old bike kinda pointless. Here's hoping it was just a bad one and your one serves you much better.

Okay so it's been a minute since I've commented on this video I'm working with 2 yd 100 Motors two different builds completely structure wise but very similar both 29 and both have custom exhaust one has 36 tooth one has 44. I have a reed valve on one that I just redid the gaskets and got it all together now it runs like s*** I won't get too annoyed though s*** happens just a small carburetor issue these Kaioken clone carburetors are not bad if you can find the adjustment on them they're sort of a pain in the ass though I will say my stock carburetor that came with the yt-100 is running very good no issues on that one definitely can feel the difference in draw and latency between the two but not bad. I will say the 100 are a new breed were literally waiting for more parts and more things available to upgrade on these motors that's one thing I do love and miss about the 80s and I was always tell somebody you can't go wrong with an 80 as well they're great Motors several different good brands out there
