Surgical technologists play a vital role as members of a highly-skilled surgical team. We are responsible for preparing the operating room, arranging surgical instruments and equipment, and ensuring that everything is safe and ready for use. We work alongside the surgeon and other members of the surgical team, maintaining a sterile environment along with passing instruments, surgical sponges, sutures and whatever is needed, anticipating each step of the procedure. Surgical techs help each procedure go smoothly, maximizing patient safety.
As a surgical tech, you'll become an expert in the theory and application of sterile technique, and combine those skills with your knowledge of human anatomy, instruments and devices, and surgical procedures to assist the surgeon in the O.R.
Lakeland offers a 65 credit degree program in Surgical Technology. It's designed to be completed in two years and when finished you'll earn an Associate of Applied Science degree, and be prepared to join a surgical team at a hospital or surgery center. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the national certification exam to become a Certified Surgical Technologist.
As part of the program, you'll take classes in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, pharmacology, microbiology and, of course, surgical technology. During your second semester, you'll begin your clinical education, where you get your first hands-on experiences in the "real" O.R. Clinical rotations will continue throughout the remainder of your program.
Surgical Technologists have a unique skill set, which makes them an important part of the operating room. They must have excellent attention to detail, manual dexterity, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. They must be knowledgeable about a wide range of surgical procedures, surgical instruments, and equipment.
