Alright! Most of you wanted to see the Laney shot out against a Marshall first. So here you go
Signal chain:
I'm using a Gibson SG Raw Power tuned to drop C# with a Seymour Duncan Black Winter pickup in the bridge and a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in the neck (used for cleans and leads here).
The guitar is running into a Deasdweald Duality DX which when on is running in TS style mode with gain at 0 and the EQ and Volume at around 1 o'clock. From there the signal goes into an Egnater SS4 Amp Switcher and into the amps. the active amp is routed back into the SS and from there into a Two Notes Torpedo Live with a GGD Cali IR loaded.

Both sound pretty good, with one just slightly edging the other out depending on settings. Laney seemed to really take the boost well and that’s probably my favorite of the gainier tones. Liked the cleans better too. The Laney and Marshall sound similar but clearly different.

Laney all day. I normally prefer Marshalls but the vh100r is one of the greatest and most underrated amps ever. I think it beats the jcm 2000

They are pretty different circuit-wise. The Laney pre-amp is like a Marshall 2203/4 sans the first treble enhancer but tighter in the bass and plus an extra gain stage. The cleans got their own circuit path. 2000 got a very different circuit.

Great comparisson! I found that the VH100's Resonance switch adds volume and gain across the entire spectrum, not just the low end. As for which amp is better - I think your conclusion is similar to mine. They are somewhat even in terms of sound quality, even though they don't sound the same. It's gonna be up to taste to decide which one you want (and maybe practical features).

Laney sounds really good but there's something about the Marshall growl that sets em apart for me.

Both of them are good in their own way. Laney VH100R straight up sounds like a JCM800 with more gain, it's one of the best high gain amps for folks who don't want to deviate from the tried and tested JCM800 tone. The DSL sounds like a modernized take on the Marshall tone. It's has less mid-range and more aggressive high end.

Great comparison, two amps really similar in character but slightly different voice on some of the channels - i would have either!

That was a great comparison and I loved your riffs too. It's like you said the Laney is a little bit tighter and it has more bottom end in my opinion but the Marshall does sound great doing what a marshall is supposed to do. Bottom line they're both great amps!

With that Kind of comparison, I underground why I prefer Laney instead of Marshall. I have 4 Laney at home. And it sounds killer in every situation. (TT20h + cab 1x12 / TT50H + cab 2x12 / Lionheart L5T-112 / Chrome-o-Zone )

Thanks for another great shootout! The "airiness" of the Marshall definitely appealed to me regarding the cleans. For crunch and the first HG tones I felt that the Laney simply sat firmer across the whole spectrum which I liked. As for the boosted tones - the Marshall's got a clarity that I'm drawn to. Overall - I probably couldn't pick one either ;) I somehow got the impression that the resonance switch on the laney would be an "always-on" option for me whereas on the Marshall the deep switch is an actual option despite the amp sounding a bit boomy with it for my taste. Also I got a little distracted when the final thoughts part started ;) Looking forward to whats up next! Cheers!

Agree! I see no reason to ever turn off the Resonance on the Laney. It sits where I like it. I wondered if somebody would notice 😂

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne The white tolex looks sweet as well! Of all of the Diezels the Hagen is probably the most tempting one for me. Maybe also the one with the worst availability... Have you had a chance yet to form an opinion on the Hagen?

I've only spent a short while with it but I really like it. Channel 1 might be the best Diezel clean to me, channel 2 seems like a Diezel take on the hot rodded Marshall sound. The gain knob covers a lot of ground here and the entire range of the knob is useable. Channel 3 striked me as 5150 sound with the Diezel mids. Great fun. Channel 4 is kinda nuts. Very heavy on the low end and saturated. It's almost fuzz like and to me, unusable for riffs without a boost to tighten it up. It's meant for leads, I guess

@@TheOtherJohnBrowne Yeah, the cleans are a big part of what makes it so appealing (mostly judging from Diezel's own videos) - seems like the whole package. (VHX sounds amazing as well and if it can cover all the tones of the other amps even more so - but I'm kind of stuck on the good old-fashioned analogue approach - a lot of which stems from longevity concerns (mainly sparts and so on).) Anyway - thanks a lot for your insight :) I'm always learning a lot!

I need to try my DSL without the deep switch because I always have the deep switch on to keep some lowend. I like what it sounds like here. What was the speaker set up? Just saw you used a Deadweld Duality that explains the tones, Kyle Bull uses one and it makes everything sound 👌

Kyles channel is great. I actually think that's where I saw that pedal first too. It's an outstanding OD! I was actually using an IR in this video. The amps run through a switcher into a Two Notes Torpedo Live with a GGD Cali IR loaded on it (so a Mesa cab with early 2000s Celestion Vintage 30s). Otherwise I would probably be using one of my Orange cabs or my frontloaded Zilla Fatboy

I like that riff at 5:37 👌. I think the Laney has a little more crunch. I have the JCM 2000 DSL100 and with a boost or overdrive it sounds pretty good

Great video. I like DSLs but I like the Laney even more! Also: these early 2000s made in uk amps pair really well with the Mesa IRs you are using. I never liked the DSL too much with the standard Marshall 1960 with T75s (music stores always paired the amp with those, massive mistake imo). For more classic tones the DSL pairs really well with the greenback marshall cabs though!

Thanks Chris! I agree. I find the souns nicely balanced. Also agree on the T75s in the Marshall cabs. Could never get the standard cabs to work for me. The 1960x, 1960v and tv cabs are great though in my opinion

Probably need to crank both amps up to really see the difference.Marshall sounds better the louder its cranked.Does the Laney have El34 tubes like the marshall?Thanks for sharing your video.

In this case, the Marshall is loaded with JJ E34L and the Laney has JJ 6L6 tubes in it. Yes, I find some Marshall amps need a certain volume to breathe. Both amps are pretty loud here. I'd say loud band practice volumes

Hi, can you tell us what footswitches you used or you recommend to switch modes using the JCM2000 DSL100?

Any latching footswitch will be able to switch between the two main channels or the reverb. You cannot switch the modes of the channels on these amps via footswitch
