"Je suis un homme Ô... comme ils disent" means "Im a man Ô... as they say" but play with the sound of the lyrics in french and could means too : Homme Ô = homo (homosexual). Plus this way to prononce it, we could feel jugement meaning. And just after "like THEY say"... So powerful.
@LionelBurton

It's mandatory to understand this double reading of "homme, ô" sounds like "homo", to understand the song (sung in 1972 by a male singer, not gay nor transvestite himself.) "Oh, I'm a man (un homme), as they say"

We all feel the same with Lara. She is an exceptional artist and her cover of Charles Aznavour's song is masterful. The song is about the difficulty of being gay at a time when it was misunderstood and mocked. Lara has always fought this difference and made 2 songs out of it.

There is a play of words in this song that can't be translated in english. In french, homme means man. So "je suis un homme oh! Comme ils disent" would be I am a man oh! As they Say. Homme oh! / Homo. The song was originaly sang by Charles Aznavour, but I love Lara's version. And yes, thé character she plays is male.

Yes exactly This song from the great Charles Aznavour released in the early 70s was the first in France to defend the Gay community. Lara with La Difference was the successor in the 90s for all the LGBT community. I saw Charles Aznavour singing this in concert and he was also a real actor; in fact he had some major roles in movies and was nominated to Cannes festival . No wonder Lara can relate to his artistry.

Hello Brandon, just to tell you that this song by Charles Aznavour is from 1972, and at that time in France (and surely elsewhere too) the life of "homosexuals" was not a long calm river (they lived more in hiding than now ) and the fight is not over yet (human stupidity has a hard tooth) but we must continue the fight for common respect, good video as usual, a cordial greeting from France, André

Well done, sir, I love this song and Lara's performance. This concert has several numbers with a bit of theatrical flair. Charles Aznavour wrote and recorded this in 1972, think about that for just a minute and what it must have meant. He was one of the biggest worldwide superstars and he worked always to lift others up and promote civil rights.

I really think you ought to hear Charles Aznavour’s version. He was one of France’s greatest singers. He was a renaissance man, but also a 5’3”, Armenian immigrant during WWI who got very, very famous worldwide. He wrote 800 songs in his lifetime. Merci.

Dear Brandon. Thanks for your reaction. As they say, it's an old song of Charles Aznavour. In 1972 he has already pointed the problem of intolerance with subtility and the loneliness of this part of population. Lara, with her sensitivity and her acting abilility gives an another life to this beautiful song. I love your ability to describe us, with very micro détails, her acting performance to deliver a wide register of emotions without loosing her vocalist skill. And thanks for giving us our émotions without filter. xx from France

She's so underrated and thankfully....THANKFULLY....she is being discovered by people such as yourself and you are getting her presence out there for new people to discover! I am VERY familiar with that song. I've known it for 40 years... In this translation/adaptation of the lyrics, it is written "homo"... Not quite right. Clearly, the story is about a homosexual. A man with taste and manners of which others would make fun of, etc. The expression at the time was "un homme aux ... ", that is precisely : "un homme aux hommes - a man attracted to men ; and the sensational Lara does pronounce it perfectly well, especially unequivocally at the end. ----- May I say that this piece, like so many written by Charles Aznavour, are incomparable Miniatures Theater Plays. No one like Aznavour could write a song, and sing it and make you believe he had experienced every moment he sings about. He is the only one I can think of who would write such Miniatures, and truly pull them off in concert. Those special songs are meant to be 'acted'. They require a flexible pulse (as demonstrated here), an exceptionally sensitive accompanist of course, and a performer who can portray the character, fully convey the story and the meaning of each word. All this said, WHO else than Lara can tackle those songs ?! ---- Eloquent reaction.

Hello, I love your reactions, but this is the best of all youtube reactions🥰.because you are simply authentic, and you transmit your emotion, and that, dear, is precious. I am happy that you have reacted to this song, since it is one of Lara's best performances, I see it and I see it again and I cry from the emotion it provokes in me. Lara is fantastic, she hypnotizes you and puts you into her world and you don't just feel the emotions, you live them one by one. She is not like any other artist that I have heard and seen, she is unique in everything, she can go from crying, to laughing, to anger, to sarcasm, to joy, to being a trasvesti or to being a little girl, she tells not only their stories, but the stories of thousands of people. I admire and love this woman, for me she is the best voice and interpreter of all time!! All of us at some point have felt hurt, disappointed, unloved, but as long as they don't steal our beautiful essence and we don't stop loving, that doesn't matter. I don't know what has happened in your life, but I hug you with my heart. Kisses BE KIND YOURSELF😉❤️😘

That truly was a vocal, acting, performance, production & more masterclass. Flawless. Props to her accompanist too. He didn't so much as miss a note when she leant on his arm then caressed his head & shoulders; which added yet another layer of visual imagery. Lara Fabian is, IMO, the best female vocalist in the last 2 decades. She's a singer who I could never hope to match, but from whom I learn more with every performance I watch & listen to. She always conveys such emotional depth & sincerity & I think it's awesome, & incredibly brave, how much of herself she's willing to share with her audiences. I loved your reaction. It was very open & honest & perfectly demonstrated how completely she is able to reach out to and affect her listeners. Thank u x

The French lyrics are just killers. Clean sentences, direct yet sober descriptions of surrounding and feelings, extreme selection of vocabulary for a massive message written and delivered in 1972 if I recall well enough) when this kind of topic and situation weren’t “positively and openly” parading around as they are today. Frankly it was daring and at the same time so fair, so just , such evidence that I ,like many others, wonder why we wait so long before things and mentality start changing . Thank you Aznavour .

A wonderful song by Charles Aznavour and a wonderful performance by LARA In 1972, Aznavour's Comme ils disent was the first to bring the taboo into the public arena. Paradoxically, it was a heterosexual artist who denounced homophobia in a society that was still very conservative, despite the hippy movement of the 1960s.

The furtive look over her shoulder...i know that feeling. People 'know' and eventhough things are a lot better, I'm still scared. One night I woke up and heard my downstairs neighbour yelling:" if i see that f**** again, i'm gonna beat him to death.' I'm an anxious person by nature. I know he wasn't talking about me. But it def.made me feel unsafe, stepping out of my door. I live in a supposedly very tolerant society. But i still feel unsafe and very much alone.

I noticed again as she says the word homo, her pronunciation makes it even more special and significant. In the last phrase in French she does not pronounce it as one word "homo". She subly divides the word into "homme" (man) and then "o" with a slight inflection that sounds like "ou", which in French means or. To me it give so much more impact. Loosely translated. "I am a man or, as they say"

Your perception is VERY sensitive and makes near perfect sense, which s extraordinary, since you're not a French talker! Félicittions!!!! You're doing a great job!!! She is «impersonating» a male transvestite/drag queen, homosexual. When Charles Aznavour wrote this song, Paris was the easiest place to live in for gays, but still, then, not so easy. In the original french version from the 70's Aznavour was subtle about it by singing Je suis un Homme-Oh comme ils disent... the word for a man in French is "un homme". You don't pronounce the end "e" in the word, by adding the "oh" at the end he brought the subject subtle... clever writing actually

We are all artists!," All of this broke barriers and changed attitudes everywhere. As you gathered, it's about a transvestite who has friends and a life, The title says it all, but this guy has this question: What makes a man a man."

This song is not from her but from Charles Aznavour. And homo is a pejoratif word even if things change

It is a derogatory word. In a way. Homosexual said this way, "homo" is like saying a f*g. KZfaq doesn't want me to use the word, understandable even if I use it to explain my thinking and not endorsing at all its meaning. It is a Charles Aznavour's song. Beautiful song indeed, rendered as always perfectly, Lara's way. I cry everytime listening to Aznavour's version. First time I heard it by Lara. Different and touching at the same time. I understand you for feeling the way you felt. I love Lara. Discovered her late in her career. I guess I was more in rock when I was younger. I really think she is the best female voice (even if like others like Diana Ankudinova, completely different though). Furthermore she is a complete performer. She is amazing. Regarding the song, "comme ils disent" was an eye-opening in the 70s when gays were openly ostracized and mocked. You should react to Aznavour. He died a few years ago at the age of 94 years old. Was still singing in his 80s for what I know. His voice was not the same, but he was still captivating his audience. A great singer. A very very great singer. Thank you for your reaction. Always appreciated especially when we are talking about the beautiful (in and out) Lara.

J'aime moyennement son interprétation, mais ça a le mérite de faire connaître l'une des plus belles chansons de Charles Aznavour !!!!

"Homo' here is clearly "homosexual" and Aznavour (who was straight) knew this very well when he created this.

Hello Brandon, and thank you so much for this video and all the others you have done on Lara Fabian, such an all-rounder artist. I can’t wait to attend her concert on 10th October 2022 in Geneva. I am a native speaker of French, and regarding your question about the word “homo” being derogatory in French, I can say, having had also the opinion of other French speakers, that nowadays, it is not. It is simply the abbreviation of homosexual, which is a neutral term. That said, in 1972, when Charles Aznavour, who is the author of the song, released it, this term, “homo” might have been derogatory, as at the time being gay was not as well accepted as it is now. Thanks again for your videos and please stay true to yourself, when you need to cry, just cry, I cry with you.

this is why charles will always be in all french heart. Homo could be derogatory, the extreme derogatory term would be "pédé" but you just could say in french "je suis gay" or "je suis homo" whithout being deragotary, butat the time that charles aznavour wrote the song, the word was wayyy more derogatory

Branden, Brandon, Brandon this is not healthy anymore. Seeing you in such pain every time you comment these video's. But hey, go on do not stop, i love every minute of it. The only remarque i can give is that you are not objective anymore as it comes to Lara.

Yes homo could be considered deragotary depending how it is said. In the context of the song it is.

And what was the non-derogatory term in 1972 in Paris?

I don't think it is derogatory in the song. Like François mentioned it is the non prejudary term. By the way the main person in the song regards himself as a woman: he says he is a "stlyliste".
