For the worriers out there, please be assured that this channel is not moving away from its roots. I dont have a functioning shop at the moment, please remember that. Once I am capable of building again, I can get some more Start Making videos out. That said, this is an amazing experiment and hopefully at least entertaining.

The slogan kind of sums me up. Welcome for the shout out and the pics etc. I will get the laser set back up once I am back and see if I can batch a load of boxes out over the coming months while I work. Will be easier if I can get it set up in the house now I have the air purifier for it. I am not sure about the boxes screwed straight to a cleat, depends how well the glue holds. I may just keep them in the larger drawer case and mount that with a frame. Will play around with it through. Away this week but will email when I get back.

"If I were the marrying kind, the kind a man I would be is a rugby prop, sir. " Ah, I'm reliving my glory days on the pitch. xTool, I missed it. Wow, you can use this laser to cut out those the tree idea that I've mailed you. Nice work with those logos. That's real artwork, brilliant. Those lasers, no doubt, make precise cuts and would be great for a production shop. Please, don't forget our roots, hand tools and wood. Endorsing others is very generous! When I was in business, I never felt like anyone was taking anything from me if they bid the same job/task. Rather, it was good for my industry that everyone could work, as long as they're product met, or exceeded, the industry standard. No apologies needed, it was good info and you said it, you "enjoyed" doing it. Keep on making.
@startmaking1

Ive never met a rugby player current or Ex that I dont like. Gentleman's game. And I have never met one who doesnt miss their glory days. Once I have figured out cutting 12mm, 1/2 inch ply then the trees would be possible. I could do 2 sizes of 1/4 inch ply and stick them together to give depth from he 2 sizes, kind of like a larger outline. But I still really like the hand cut look. the precision and repeatability is the best feature of the laser. The kerf is so thin that it is hard to take the pieces apart sometimes. Bonkers. All that said, as much as I love the machine, it is a separate project to my woodworking. There will be times that it pops up but hand tools are where my happiness is. And maybe the odd power tool. You will also see more endorsements in the future. I have spent way too long blinkered in my own growth. You are spot on as usual, views on other videos are not at the expense of views on mine. Small channels (like I consider mine to be), need to be seen as there is an ocean of talent out there. Email me any channels lower than 10k subs that you watch as I plan to do a spot light video in a few months to recommend a few. I notice that you are also a Brian Flynn fan. Good taste.

Mark, a very good video on a topic I know nothing about. You showed how versatile a laser could be in a wood shop by showing a variety of different things it could be used for making. In the past, I've mainly seen it used for cutting, but I do know a professional carver down south who now uses it in his carving too. At my age (75+), I'm not very interested in learning a new technology & don't have the time to learn if I was. I guess I'll remain being a hand tool woodworker who uses what tools I have. I enjoy watching. subject videos like this one as well as your build videos.

Hi Bill. I bet it is really handy in carving. I would like to see that. Bit out of my league for now. I understand not wanting to tackle the new tech. Cant blame you really. I find it a little stressful as I am only just competent with a PC. Only just. I am looking forward to getting back to my hand tools once they are unpacked and homed in the workshop. This will become a separate entity in my work.

Mark, you always start by saying you are a novice, but you are a very intelligent and talented novice. For everything you start, you move ahead very quickly. When you make the french cleat, for your cubby box, it may be wise to make the cleat a shelf, with triangular sides and a back, for extra support. The cubby drawers will each hold quite a bit and could get rather heavy, over time. Maybe put a lip on the front of the shelf, to catch the edge of the box bottom, to keep it from sliding off. 😁✌🖖

I bought the Atomstack 10 watt diode laser and love it. I wouldn't pay 4 of 5 thousand for a small CO2 laser though as the CO2 depletes even if you don't use the laser. The only think I heard that you can't use with X Tool is Lightburn which is very very versatile and easy to use all in one program. It's nice to see you have a bigger work space now. When customers as for something from me I sometimes make a little fridge magnet for them as a thank you. Also as another idea I cut the front of thick branches or young trees to about 80 mm wide leaving enough for a tea light candle then etching the fronts and people love them. Super easy super cheap and good profit. Living in Western Canada I have lots of access to lots and lots of free wood. Also I use a 25 mm laser cut button out of thin wood with my logo on it and it's easy to make lots quickly and just glue them in. I also laser cut a thin 25 mm plug with a laser cut key hole as a hanger. I then drill a 25 mm hold just deep enough for the plug to fit then drill another 20 mm hold so a screw can fit in the key hole.
@startmaking1
@startmaking1 4 ай бұрын
I am not a laser expert. Can you get the CO2 replenished in some way. I worry about the smaller lasers that dont have a surround. They must kick out so many fumes. I believe that the xTool can work with laser burn but again, I am yet to try. I find the software at the moment that comes with it good enough for my level. Love the freebee idea, Really good for customer service I know If I received a little extra I would return next time for sure.
@1976ClassicCelica
@1976ClassicCelica 4 ай бұрын
@@startmaking1 I started with LaserGRBL. Which was free but limited with what you can do. I believe Lightburn can make SVG and DFX file that can be used with X Tool. Yes you can get the tubes replenished or replaced but it's not cheap. The professional Epilog lasers quoted me a $2000 refill charge and that was years ago.
@startmaking1
@startmaking1 4 ай бұрын
Wow that is a lot. I may be lucky with this. If I can fit the laser into the channel I guess I could justify upgrading it after a few years and then giving away this model long before the CO2 issue. But time will tell.

@@startmaking1 @startmaking1 no you haven't missed them. In fact, the reason I knew they hadn't posted was because you didn't reply 🙂 I've not made any yet. I think the trick will be getting the parts exactly the same, which is where the laser cutter would be a godsend

The laser cutter would definitely increase the accuracy and repeatability. it's the rest of the engineering that sounds tricky.
@chriscollins9717
@chriscollins9717 8 ай бұрын
@@startmaking1 Maybe. I think you might get away without the springs etc. and just put a threaded rod through the main dowel through to the main "clamp". There is another KZfaqr (no clue who it is, sorry) who uses blue tape when engraving on wood. They claim it prevents "bleeding" around the image from the laser.
