It's finally here! My new Precision Matthews PM-1440GT lathe! In this video I tell the story of choosing the lathe, ordering the lathe, and moving it to its new home. Quite a process, but I couldn't be happier.

Hi Gavin, I'm sure you will love the GT. I've had mine around a year. I went the 3Ø unit and did the whole conversion, it was a lot of thinking and work but I got it done with lots of help, over several weeks in my spare time, from a couple of members on the Hobby Machinist forum. I sub'd to follow your adventure. Enjoy the new machines. I love mine.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to sow using the black pipe to move the machinery into place. I used a similar method with 4 inch PVC pipe to move a collapsed 70 foot tower into place but had not considered black pipe and moving the machinery for my machine shop. I am building a hobby aero-space machine shop and have no experience in building a shop or positioning thein the machinery for optimum use. It has been more than fifty years since I was last in a machine shop working as a journeyman tool and die, maker. Your videos are great. I will receive a PM-728VT in a few days and thank you so much for sharing the practical site of moving equipment.

Love your channel and reloading and metal work and machining. I read many gun digest and reloading books 3-4 years ago and ordered the RCBS Rock Chucker supreme kit in 2015 and ordered a reloading bench made in North Carolina by American Workbench and it sat in boxes til last year. I was pretty intimidated and overly cautious but I finally bit the bullet and set up reloading bench and cut a piece of cardboard to cover the rock maple butcher block top and stacked the boxes of reloading equipment on top and there it sat for many months collecting dust. I finally cleared bench off and opened boxes and arranged reloading tools and got things setup. I still didn’t have any primers or powder so I ordered large rifle primers, small rifle, large magnum rifle, small and large pistol all Winchester and 2lbs of Varget. I had all the dies and shell holders and finally dove in! I still am always reading and researching I bought a Starrett dial caliper around $200 because I wanted quality and American made! Also bought a National digital caliper for $20 so I could learn how to read the dial caliper but also to double check readings. Sorry didn’t mean to write a book but I love your channel and the quality of your videos and have learned so much! I’ve watched many other KZfaq channels on reloading and shooting, but Your channel blows all the others away and you are by Far my Favorite!!!Thank you for doing what you do! I’ve been planning/dreaming/planning again on how to move a lathe and I was thinking pipes because I’ve moved boats that way single handedly but it was never all that precise so I was thinking it’s a stupid idea. I am really glad to know not only that it’s not dumb it actually works but also now I know what size pipe to get. Thanks. Now I just need to answer 6,000 other questions and I’ll be good

I don't have a lathe move story, but I did just start making knives and had to move in a mill. It is only a Jet drill/mill that weighs about 350lbs. It was a chore. But like you said, the story is only just starting 😀

Using the pipe to role the machine is an awesome method, I can relate having used the same technique moving two very large and heavy gun safes into my basement. Moving my two safes I was extremely concerned with someone getting hurt, they weight close to 1500 lbs each but using the pipe they we so close to the ground there was never any danger of them flipping over. I am glad to see you use the method and am commenting hoping other who need to move heavy items like these do the same, I believe its the safes way possible.

I think anyone researching a purchase couldn’t help but like this video. Very comprehensive indeed. I guess I’m left wondering tho at the end “that’s all well & good, and assuming I was cashed up enough, why couldn’t I just order the whole package of everything seen here through PM at a set “package price” and what that actual price would be at the time of publishing. The most likely response by anyone watching would be “yeah that’s exactly what I want, so how much and who do I contact to order it?”. Wouldn’t it make sense for PM to partner with you and issue a “discount code” where you get a small consideration from each package sold and the buyer gets a small discount and PM gets a heap more orders for this specific package? Just seems a bit convoluted is all if you have to try and individually organise all this through PM by sending them the link to this video, and saying “how much for the complete package as seen in this video please?” & if you do, where’s the benefit to me or you in doing so? The only one to benefit from this video would be PM who essentially are getting free advertising and more orders as a result of your excellent work on the video. Just seems kinda odd to me. I’d like a PM machine just like this if it was Taiwanese made rather than Chinese. But by the time it’s shipped Taiwan to USA then all the way to Australia the price would double, because of multiple exchange rates, import tariffs and various shipping and tax schemes in multiple countries - then there’s the issue of different mains power supplies in different countries for the electric motor etc. Before you know it, it’s no longer affordable at all. The ONLY choice we get here downunder is the cheap Chinese crap from our local Hare & Forbes Machinery House & it really is rubbish BUT at least it’s affordable rubbish. I’ve tried to converse with both Grizzly & Precision Mathews before today but it’s a waste of time they are only interested in US customers.

Hi Gavin. Love the videos. Info packed and well done. About to pull the trigger on an AR AD-10 (or ADX-10) for the home shop. would go into a distribution panel and then add conduit/dros as necessary. A few folks have mentioned running lathes with a VFD for speed control. Gives me a little pause - whether to go all in on 3-phase or just use VFD's for now. For sure getting a PM-949. Lathe later. Any thoughts?

Great videos on this machine, Gavin. Much appreciated, as I am researching a purchase. Are you happy you went with the 1440GT, or would you go with the 1440TL if you had it to do all over again? The TL-series lathe is $4-5k more expensive, but it's almost twice the mass as well. Have you found the 1440GT to be all you need? Sounds like accuracy isn't an issue for you.

Thanks for the video. I'm narrowing down between the GT, the GS and BV. Love the idea of the Taiwan model, but also love the idea of variable speed out of the box. I don't care much about inches, so I wonder if you can comment how easy it is to change between common metric theads (all of mine would be between .5 and 2.0 mm). Btw, I moved in my big Lagun mill last year (more accurately, I helped an experienced friend help me) using a bunch of black water pipe. Surprisingly easy.

I can relate to how nervous you were operating the forks with all that weight and money hanging off. I have to move one ton chlorine gas cylinders at my work. Dropping one could literally kill everyone in the area. Also have to move huge totes of aqueous Ammonia and unload tanker trucks of Sulfuric and Hydrochloric acid, as well as concentrated Sodium Hydroxide. But the chlorine gas cylinders are definitely the scariest.

i thought this lathe had a built in spider. on there website the 14x40GS gunsmith lathe shows a pic with a spider. its also listed in the description. great story though.

Gavin, Please keep these coming I have been checking on the All About Lathe Series. I do need just a little help please. My 1440GT is in bound and I am making risers since I'm 6'3". Could you or someone here please send me the dimensions of the lathe base on the tail stock end, I have read on the PM site the dimensions but I need to bolt hole dimensions so I can get these risers completed,. Thanks and your help would be much appreciated!!

Did you opt for the single or three phase? If you want three phase how did you deal with power conversion from single to three. I am looking at this exact machine but don't have 3 phase available and don't want to rewire the whole machine for a VFT. Trying to figure it all our.

3 phase is best with electronic inverter/speed driver, all can be 1 ph powered because they use full-wave diodes.

Gavin,,,,Would like to know how your lathe is doing,,,have some old Altas, (Craftsman) and want to upgrade to a 14 X 40,,,looked at the China built ones,,,heard many horror stories about ways being off and sand in castings and gears.. Really like to know your thoughts on this one and the option package you ordered... Thanks so much if you could inform me Douglas

Douglas- the PM-1440GT has been flawless, but I haven't done my first oil change (headstock, saddle) - I should be doing that shortly! I'll keep you posted. Yes, I do plan to do a video on the outboard spider I built... Trying to make time to finish the video :)

I think that looks like a good smaller lathe for that kind of work- with 1 9/16" thru-spindle capacity, you'll be able to chamber barrels, thread muzzle brakes thru the spindle.... Also look at the PM1340-GT...

Yes, I'm taking a Benchmark 223 barrel blank (24" finished length), and will be showing threading the tenon, chambering the barrel for 224 Valkyrie, and threading the muzzle... Stay tuned!

gavintoobe and an SOT 2? I have considered getting an ffl 06, but I am not ready to commit to ITAR ... I hate dealing with regulations . Kind of funny that I made it my job .

I've read some things about that, but I think if I get to the stage of business which requires an FFL, I will probably need to pay ITAR fees anyway. It's just another burden to startup that puts the process further down the road.

I don't remember the name, but there was a kinda tragic story and a subsequent ruling about how the government harassed a small manufacturer who did cowboy action shooting or something like that, and manufactured reproduction moon clips. He wasn't even trying to make money, he just wanted the fans of some obscure revolver to be able to shoot them. He did everything to ensure that the clips were only sold in the US, and per the language of ITAR and the regs at the time, they probably didn't constitute a controlled item anyway. None the less, they threatened the poor guy with criminal charges and hundreds of thousands of dollars of fines and back taxes. I hate compliance work, but I already have to do it for my day job. That makes me loathe to add any additional filing and records requirements, or any recurring fees which are incurred simply to exist.

What are some of the legalities of gun smithing.

You can repair and even build guns for your own use all day with no license as long as they fall within machinegun and SBR laws, etc. To make a living doing gunsmithing for others, the ATF says you must have a FFL license. You don't need a formal degree to do so, but have to meet the requirements for storage and security, etc.

its not even close to being a ultra precision lathe, just the spindle bearings for such machines are many thousands. That said really interesting video and Id love to do gunsmithing, but being in the UK would result in me going to jail forever!

Actually, you are wrong. This lathe comes with high-precision Japanese spindle bearings. I put a tenths indicator on the spindle and rotated it- less than +/- .00005" TIR - I'll show that in the lathe overview video.

+gavintoobe gamet super precision bearings are £5000 upwards a set. Sorry I re build and repair machine tools for a living so know a bit about that sort of thing. You will have better grade bearings but that is all.

Montgomery Family because good American lathes are ridiculously priced. What Gavin got is an excellent lathe for a significantly reduced priced compared to an American lathe of the same quality.

trakfloater07 well said. I currently own 3 American made lathes and this Taiwanese lathe- they are all great, each has a purpose. The PM-1440GT is my best for precision work :)

I love the older equipment, but honestly to get a lathe this tight, you'd have to do a full rebuild on most older machines. I've talked to folks on Practical Machinist that have spent a LOT (and I mean LOT) of $$$$$ and time getting that done. This is the machine for me. And BTW: check out my content on American machines- love them too, but for other things :)

Hey Gavin, great video. I've got the PM-1340GT (13" x 40") although it's sold as a completely different brand here in Australia. Everything you said about yours is true of mine also - the Taiwanese quality is a huge step up, and the lathe really has a lot of premium features for the price. And they really are super-precise. I've even grown to like the belt-drive first stage high/low range gearing, which is more forgiving if, heaven forbid, anything were to go horribly wrong.
