This is a quick video with me attempting a challenge of simulating an engine failure on the downwind leg of the pattern and seeing if I can get back to the runway.
The challenge is, once on my downwind leg, cut throttle back to 0 then try and get back to the runway! This is the first time I've attempted this! Who knows what will happen...

I'm also using the modified version of the Cessna 152 which can be downloaded at: github.com/DRF30q/C152X

First! (For Flying Theston :) ) - this did make me smile - I’ll wait for the experienced pilots to comment on your technique... In terms of height MSFS defaults to standard pressure meaning once you know the height of the airfield (About 150’ for EGBW) that’s your baseline unless you’ve deliberately changed something. It’s a significant difference between sim and real life. In terms of gradually improving you could start trying circuits from 23 - a much shorter runway and you will have to learn new landmarks.

hah yeah it was just a bit of fun, I'm surprised I even made it back alive! I also want to try a 36 runway pattern soon too

@@FlyingTheston hello bro i need help i made kuwait airport but weirdly there is no ils while in kuwait all the runways has ils ive seen ur videos but still suffering i did exactly what u said but the loc and glide slope arent working also to show the ils approach type i should and approach type + missed approach legs and approach legs man im suffering every time i try making a flight with ils approach selected the fmc just doesnt get it some time it doesnt show the flight plan and yes it is cuz of the ils selected (( bro can u do a video covering this to show how to make a correct approach that will be awesome 👍👍

Not easy but something you have to do as part of your PPL. The only real mistake was not to turn towards the runway soon enough, also your approach was too wide. Aim closer to the threshold of runway 18, then you won't risk landing short. It's a long runway so you are not likely to overshoot. But very well done for your first attempt, we'll try it for real sometime. BTW, added Dropbox link to photos in #5 comments.

I'm surprised I even made it back to the runway, I definitely noticed how shallow my approach was, could have gone either way, the weather was on my side for sure. That's the other thing I need to remember is I don't "need" to land at the start of the runway, I'm always concentrating on having to get down right at the start and I feel I over focus on it.

Exactly. Better to overshoot at the far end at low speed than undershoot at high speed ( or worse still, stall in). The 65 knot recommended glide speed gives the best distance travelled in a 152 - slower than this may give you longer in the air but you want travel as far.

@@152driver1 when I turned on to the short final, I thought I was going to splat into the ground for sure. I was way too shallow, I bet in real life that would have been a very different ending

Also if your engine is actually stopped rather than just idling (say by pulling back the mixture control) the extra drag makes it much harder.
