I really hate how this book supports the stereotypes that "women are always wishing other women's downfall " and "all women compare themselves to others" and "if you're not drop dead gorgeous, how could you ever lead a fulfilling life and have meaningful relationships?" Idk, it just rubs me the wrong way knowing that there are people reading this who don't know better than to take on the morals and mindset she portrays in her book. It can be pretty damaging, honestly

I think that comparing yourself to others is a natural instinct for young people of any gender, but it's with age that you learn that it's not only bad for the people around you, but it's also bad for you. It's a natural but unproductive instinct that should be managed and not listened to. The reason why the depiction of that instinct in this book is damaging is because she says "I feel this way and I'm beautiful and successful anyway" which gives the impression to young readers that this mindset doesn't need to be managed.

Especially considering that the clear target audience is high school / middle school girls and normalizing this behavior is not okay. Everybody struggles with self esteem issues but absolutely nothing good comes from glamorizing and romanticizing hating other girls that you believe are prettier than you, hating yourself, and having no desire to confront your own issues and grow from learning how to build yourself up without tearing yourself and other girls down.

As an author myself, I can confirm how important “show, don’t tell” is. It’s not an easy skill to master, but once you’ve got it down, your audience will fall head over heels for you. Lele Pons didn’t learn this skill and she’s probably too lazy to try. For god’s sake, Lele, just try. TRY! Ugh…

To be fair, patriarchy is too strong in Latin America. Girls are taught since very little to be "perfect" and "pretty" in order to "catch" a man who can financially support them. That's why they use a lot of cosmetic surgery even if they don't have money for food, they are obsessed with beauty contests, and they see other girls as competency. Even telenovelas set the example for little girls. Everyone is extremely pretty and voluptuous in telenovelas, including the supposedly 50 years old mom. The only 'ugly' people in telenovelas are the housemaids, gardeners, and poor people (and they usually use people with indigenous features for those roles but that's another story). My best friend is precisely from Venezuela, but she migrated to Europe when she was 10yo and every time she goes to visit her family she comes back with stories about her cousins not having toilet paper but getting their second breast surgery at 21 years old and etc. Also she herself have a lot of self esteem problems due to that pressure from her family and because she doesn't meet the Venezuelan beauty canon (she is not white like Lele and she does have beautiful native American features). She had an ED in high school and for some time she hated her features. Fortunately, she is seeing now a therapist. (Sorry for the long post)

The only way this book works is if it is revealed to be Lele Pons’s stream of consciousness as she tells her story to a psychologist. So basically, if it ripped off the conceit/premise of “Catcher in the Rye.” Then again, at least Holden Caufield is a believable little ass; Lele Pons is the caricature of a caricature of a teenage girl.

Books like this annoy me so much. Because I want to be a writer, knowing how she has the industry support is do disheartening. She has the editor, the publishing house... the money to make it a success. I'd kill for that right now. And this is the trash that becomes the final version? Yikes.

They'd accept trash from her and her ghostwriter cause her name sells. It's hard to get anything in the writing world, but keep at it. You'll get there. Don't compare yourself to her because they weren't looking for quality in this, because it just needs her name to make money. Create your stuff. It sucks that the bar is lower for her, but it'll make it even more impressive when you get there and publish something worth being proud of.

@@sillysnail5459 I'm not comparing myself to her at all, but thanks for the kind words! I just mean that as someone who knows the industry pretty well (I do work as an editor for a publishing house) it's frustrating how much effort goes into producing a book. So when books like these make it to the shelves because it is, at least a little bit, of a sell out. They're completely disregarding talent for a big name (which, I understand the point is to make money haha) and, the idealistic part of me, would love to see better content attached to big names.

“Pretty is as pretty does” - I truly believe this old saying. You have to be about more than your looks. None of us have that much control over how we look. And, we’re all gonna get old and wrinkly someday (hopefully!) so life has to be about the things you love doing, the people you love to be around. You have to develop yourself and find happiness within yourself. It’s not easy but it’s so worth it.

I am currently where you were before; comparing myself to other girls by looks and career-wise. I hope one day I can find great friends like you did and stop comparing myself. It's so draining and exhausting. Btw thank you for saying what you said about this, I really needed to hear it 💕

I believe you will get through it! It’s a tough cycle to break and it is terrifying learning to trust people at first but once you start to do, everything is much better and more enjoyable and less stressful :)

As much cringe as this is, I think there is more here than just how shallow Lele appears. Lele seems to lack a solid self esteem and she might have put all her worth into her appearance and her sexuality. She might have done this because it’s something she feels she can control. A situation as small as seeing another girl’s smile that she thinks is “prettier than her’s” makes her feel less valuable as a person. It may seem shallow to people reading this, but I think we should be compassionate to her and realize how hard it must be to live this way. I don’t think being so shallow is choice for her at this point. Maybe her looks are her ONLY source of value. It may not be possible for her to just stop comparing herself to other girls, she might have nothing to fall back onto. Unfortunately a lot of people feel worthless and grab onto something they think they can control to try to fill gap. It’s usually a result of negative early childhood events. I don’t know much about Lele but I would hope she can go to therapy and develop a greater self worth and heal from traumas she might have had.

Thank youuuu!!!! I was really starting to worry bc I do feel like that about myself and I hate it so much, I hate that I'm comparing myself so much and that I have such little value of myself. No one in the comments seem to agree and I was starting to feel like I'm a terrible piece of crap.
