Less is More? Pruning my Serissa foetida Bonsai, The Bonsai Zone, Aug 2020

I'm pruning my dense umbrella shaped canopy to create a more natural looking miniature tropical bonsai.
The tree is a Serissa foetida and it is styled to look like an African Acacia tree.

Hey Nigel. When you do the bald cypress video of old growth, check out the ones in the swamps and such of New Orleans/Louisiana gulf. With the buttress trunks and “root knees” they’ve got some pretty big and old ones out there and I’m sure they’ve been photographed a lot. Looking forward to that video as I’ve got a bald and Montezuma cypress growing in the method you were growing your willow in with the 2nd water pot underneath.

Hi Nigel, #1 fan here from Saskatoon! First of all, I like all your videos and spent hours and hours watching them! Very nice looking serrisa! Does it like wiring? And I have question on soil mixture. One of your videos, you mentioned 50% turface, and 50% perlite so I started using the mixture. Is that accurate? I heard in one of the bonzai group and I got roasted about the turface that it absorbs nutrients and suck nutrients from the plant. I think they're wrong but be nice to hear from you.
@TobyJin
@TobyJin 3 жыл бұрын
With bald cypress, you can either go for a classic coniferous look with a thick trunk and lateral branches or you can go with the flat top bald cypress which represents old bald cypresses that have lost its bottom branches and only the apex is left, also I find that with deciduous conifers, growing hardwood cuttings at the end of fall/early winter is best as you can guarentee a new plant whilst if you grow softwood cuttings, they may die off in fall if they are not big enough as these deciduous conifers usually drop some branches during fall.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Toby, I'll have to think about the styling, I might want to develop all the lower branches and then turn them into deadwood later for a more mature tree look? I'll think about it! Thanks!
@TobyJin

The Serrisa looks so much better now that you’ve pruned the canopy like that. I admit, that i was incredibly sceptical of what you were doing, I did not think that you it was going to look good at all, but now you’ve done it, it looks really good. It lets so much more light into the centre of the tree and makes it look more realistic and natural. A job well done!

Is there any branches on your serrisa that you would like to be thicker or are they all where you would want them
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
I've been trying to keep them balanced, but some are a little too thick compared to others. I did some big cuts in an effort to equalize the vigor in the canopy and I hope over time it will all work out!

Out of 27 Baobab tree seeds I planted, 3 are sprouting. Last batch I received in the mail. Late in the year. I will see how they survive the winter in the basement.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
At least you got some going Tom, I think it's going to be difficult getting them through the winter. I'll have to keep them dry and warm once the leaves fall off. No watering until new growth emerges in spring.

Hi, Do you trim your Asparagus Fern? I have a 40-year-old plant I've had since my first apartment!
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it gets trimmed at least once a year, sometimes twice. I do try and keep the "fronds" sorted out so they don't cross each other and get all tangled up. If you prune the growing fronds when they are too young, it will die off. It is better to wait until it is just starting to mature before pruning. They usually last about a year before they go brown and fall off. You can style it any way you want, but basically you are doing a profile prune to get it to look more tree like.

Hi Nigel. I’ve seen some videos about bonsai and they claim bonsai need to be sprayed with lime sulphur before putting them away for the winter. Is this true?
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
It is important to inspect and remove as many insects as you can before placing them indoors. Indoors, insect problems multiple rapidly. I spray mine with a soap and water mix of 40 parts water and one part liquid dish soap. This helps! You can use a dormant oil spray on your hardy trees after the leaves have fallen, a recipe is available on line to make your own. Lime Sulfur can be applied also, but it has to be done even more carefully than the other methods because it is more toxic. Dormant oil is considered organic and I would go that route! www.hunker.com/12004024/homemade-dormant-oil-spray-for-fruit-trees

When Serissa is in flower, do bees or bumble-bees visit it? Just curios, because it is not native to Canada.
@TheBonsaiZone
@TheBonsaiZone 3 жыл бұрын
I don't get any regular looking bees, but I do get some small flying insects, I think they might be tiny wasps? We do grow a lot of native flowers that some people consider to be weeds for the native bees. In fall the yard is humming with them!
