It’s sad. Such a masterpiece of a movie & this criticism will over shadow it. Lin has broken boundaries and it seems like “it was all up to him” That movie had every shade the Latino community has to offer if you see the big picture with the back up dancers. I’m proud of it for many reasons and at the end of the day we got nothing. This is all we got for now & thanks to Lin

Such a disappointment but colorism is real. I remember it growing up. All the comments that my abuelas who were beautiful people would make about "good hair" staying out of the sun to keep from "getting too brown" etc. They really truly felt like it was for our own good but it was some of the most subtle and destructive stuff. I love Anthony Ramos. His acting is amazing but so is his music. All of us from the Latino community represent every beautiful color of the rainbow. What a terrific miss by Lin Manual M but progress is measured in inches and in miles.

@@WillmobilePlus Not about victims at all. It is real. There was the paper bag test with African Americans. There is an emphasis of lighter skin actresses in not only Bollywood in India but Nollywood in Nigeria and tons of bleaching products all over Africa and the Caribbean being promoted and used. Lighter and damned near white is preferred in much of East Asia. There is the breeding out process in some Latin American countries. What happened to the black people in Argentina? And yeah, I've heard the talk of good hair and bright skin in my own family. Colorism is not only real, it's global.

I don’t think that’s Lin’s intention when he used a black cast in Hamilton. I think we don’t know better and we even go out and destroy the only opportunity we have had in our lives in Hollywood. Every time I watch Lin talk about this movie is all about making his community feel proud. He is a successful millionaire that still had decided to live in Washington Heights. It truly broke my heart that we did not support this movie with all of our hearts the way Lin did. All he wanted was for Washington Heights to Shine around the world. Let’s see where this will take us for future opportunities. If we just will land at the place/ non seen back of line that we have always been or we are moving forward a bit after In The Heights with all the controversy and disatisfaction. The way people talk is like the community has written the story and the city had paid for the production. Not a man’s art but our egos and insecurities are hurt. I truly know about colorismos because I am Dominican. I have black in my blood. But Lin’s intention was not to hurt or dismiss anyone but to include. I hope we all learned something from this. God bless Lin and his heart.

I wish we would be more honest as a culture and stop misusing the word colorism. This is racism and erasure of black faces. Colorism can only happen within a race not an ethnicity of different racial groups. I’m glad we are talking about this more though. I’m tired of not being represented because even when there is AfroLatino representation, they always look light mulato or racially ambiguous. I want to see more Gina Torres, Zoe Saldana, and Amara La Negra phenotypes. About the pandering to white audience bit…they proved that to not be true with Black Panther. People watch what they want to watch including white people and they especially love to watch movies of other ethnicities even if it’s to develop a stereotype of the race of people in the movies.

I just looked at a quick pic of the cast. While I agree there should be more varied representation I don’t really understand “white/European passing”. They all look Latino to me. I’m seeing more Latina women on social media who are being put down for being “white”. I don’t get it. There are varying shades to Latino people. Just like black people. Again, I’m not saying this in regards to there not being actual Afro-Latino representation but I don’t understand “white passing”.

I watched and enjoyed it, but… the whole time I was thinking “where are the black Dominicans?” I’m from NYC & Washington Heights is literally like a little DR lol There was also a lack of Bachata playing at all hours of the day lol I was looking for that but surprised that wasn’t really featured. I also liked seeing Caribbean Latinos featured (as a Boricua myself). But yeah it was strange to see so many white and just very light-skinned people featured. Also, in my experience, many Dominicans in NY don’t like to identify as black, even when they are very clearly black, and are very anti-black themselves, but that’s a convo for another day 🤷🏻‍♀️

If "black" means "African American" then they are not "black." I've heard black people say things like blacks were beefing with Jamaicans. Most Jamaicans are black but in this case "black" meant black Americans vs. Jamaican black people. Now, if they aren't black because they have problem with their skin tone, that's a different story.

This topic is such a slippery slope. Anthony Ramos played Morris Blackman on Spike Lee’s Netflix series. Although PR, most Caribbean Latinos have at least a small or more percentage of African descent. Is he not “Afro” enough? What about Leslie Grace? She plays a PR character, but is DR heritage in real life. Is she too light skinned to count? There a lot of darker skinned extras and dancers in the movie, but it’s tricky where to draw the line when casting. Was Dasha Polanco not dark enough? I wish she had a bit more lines, cause she was great. As a Chicano who is pretty evenly split between Spanish/indigenous, married to an African-American woman that has white grandparent on each side, but she’s way darker than her sister, and our sons look like a mix between Bruno Mars (there is perhaps Asian or Native American somewhere in our ancestry) and Anthony Ramos, so would my kids be considered dark enough to make that distinction. Lin-Manuel Miranda has already apologized, so of course Hollywood (at least produced by BIPoC producers) can always do better. Who would y’all cast?

As a Puerto Rican (trigeño), I think that all of the fake outrage/keyboard warrior hate towards Lin Manuel is unfounded. He made all of the american founding fathers black in Hamilton. Was that not Afro enough? I saw In The Heights, and saw hundreds of Afro latins in the street scenes and dance sequences. Do Blacks dump on Tyler Perry and boycott his movies when he makes a mistake? People - stop hating on one of our own. He is at least trying to put our stories out there and by the way......employing latinos.

Honestly I was just happy to see a major movie featuring Latinos period and I watched it and loved it BUT I totally get what everyone is saying. At the same time, it's like can we just enjoy it, can it just be a step in the right direction? Also are we saying Leslie Grace and Dascha Polanco aren't Afro Latina enough? I don't think that's fair to them...Like what exactly is considered afro latino? Where is the cut off line? And then I agree, you don't see alot of people who are our complexion (I'm about the same complexion as you) so it's like...it's alot. Overall I'm just happy about the movie and I hope they continue to make progress with inclusion in the future.

Yes I agree everyone should be represented fairly. But what about Hamilton? A predominantly black cast playing historical figures who were white. It works both ways. But no one speaks up about Hamilton saying it's too black and doesn't represent the demographic of the time for fear of being racist. There's too many double standards. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Leslie Grace of Afro-Latino descent? But then to say, but she isn't black enough would be cruel and unfair wouldn't it?
@rachelelyse95
@rachelelyse95 3 жыл бұрын
The point of the casting in Hamilton was to have black people/POC playing roles they would never be cast for. The point was to flip the rules. There’s really no comparison. If In the Heights is based on the people of Washington Heights, then it would make sense to cast some darker toned Afro-Latinos in MAIN roles. It’s not that there weren’t ANY Afro-Latinos in main roles, because there were some, it’s just they were pretty light causing the overall look of the main cast to be extremely light & white-washed, when in reality Washington Heights doesn’t really look like that. All people have to do is walk down 181st and see that the heights doesn’t look like that. And if black Latinos from NYC are pointing it out, we should listen, they live there, that’s their life. Black Latinos are rarely ever cast in Latino roles. To me, they had an opportunity here, but the casting was a bit of a miss 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had *high* hopes for the movie. I found the musical when my grandma died white people were kicking out everyone in our neighborhood. i wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with college etc. So the story behind the musical hit so many things for me and I wanted that translated on the screen. Vanessa fell so short it was sad. When she said she was the best one for the role that was almost laughable. Then they gave some of Benny and Ninas parts to Usnavi and Vanessa. They cut out a great opportunity to talk about anti-blackness in the community by cutting out important songs. They cut out humanzing Ninas dad by cutting out an amazing song. They just dropped the ball on this one. I am so glad that latinos get to see their culture on the big screen. I have also learned just from browsing the internet how underrepresented afro latinx are. and when I saw that interview of the lady from the root asking *why* they weren't able to be cast as leads ple saying afro latinx people dont exist and saying black people, in general, are overrepresented people want to see themselves especially in a place that is meant to be a love letter to the heights is sad. It's so ugly that people have to not only fight to be seen on screen but fight for people of their own culture so see them. that's so heartbreaking. With that all being said I actively look for books and movies with black/afro latinx leads. So that my coins go where it can make a difference. I am so glad other cultures are being shown but LMM himself has had some sketchy things with colorism that I've noticed as well as Chu the director. We need to stop giving those people platforms. I'm tired of accepting scraps and people expecting us to be grateful. It's 2021dark skinned people are more than background characters.

I was like ...where's the Afrodominicans, and Garifunas.... why you got white puerto Ricans and white central Americans.. like the el salvordorians.... I'm from New york... Washington Hights is predominant AfroLatin not mestizo....lmao!!!! You have white Spanish Caribbeans playing Black Hispanic Caribbean parts.... in a well known Black Hispanic Caribbean community.... and you have white/ Mestizo central Americans ....playing Black central American (Garifuna) parts.... The mestizos ... they live queens!!! Not the hights ...Miranda sold out... let's keep it real.... At least movies about a Mexican mestizo communities use Mestizo Mexicans... hell I even research the actors.... all mostly White Mestizos.... no Caribe (Garifuna) are AfroLatino (Afrodominican) people ... And to make it personal.... the only Black guy they use....was a black American Let's get this right... a movie about a AfroLatino community and the only Black lead... was 1 just 1 African American? Smh The movie is not only racists.... it's tribalism 2 😮 "Yea! let's make the AfroLatinos mad at the African Americans Because the racist and tribalis directors Is telling us... the only Black people in Washington hights Is AFRICAN AMERICANS.... because there's no Blacks in Latin America.... Miranda is a fckng sale out...straight up Just like that coon.... Hollywood When he dis La Amara negra

What were u watching. Ur just jumping the band wagon. The first 15 min of the movie all i saw were all different complexions. One of the main characters Corey Antonio Hawkins was African American. Lin was showing diversity. You make no senses. He actually didnt have pale or blue eyes Hispanics who actually do exist. Come back to me and tell me what black or white movie has a Hispanic role as the main charater. He actually made a whole.movie about all complexions of Hispanic. Watch the movies raising victor vargas. That movie didnt have not even one afro Hispanic movie. Did you see Hamilton almost the whole staff was African american people. Hispanic are all different shades. All different shades. We dont have more blacks more white more tan we are blessed. Cause were have lots of shades of color. We dont just have one shade.how about frida khole movie there was no afro Latinos people in that movie. none. The most important of all and the most popular show in history orange is the new black. Their was like 4 main Latina characters which on was afro latino? None. Mexico there are afro American latino. Lets talk about the real issue and not use one person as a example. When lin is actually placing Hispanic on the map.I dont know how people love to spread hate. Please stop. peace love and kindness 1🇵🇷🇵🇷❤
