The Vanquish Products VS4-10 Phoenix Portal is an engineering marvel. Adjustable overdrive (OD) in the front, DIG in the rear, ultra-stiff chassis and a hobbyist-friendly price. This thing should set some new records on our test course! ...right?
Well, maybe. There are a few issues. As always, we'll get it onto the 6-problem course and then any design shortcomings will make themselves known.
Let's test!

Correction on axle weights: I've trimmed a few seconds from the crawl debrief, where I mentioned wanting brass tubes inside the axle housings. The VS4-10 does actually come with these in the kit and I did install them! Just forgot that during that little chat in the debrief! Credit to YoShImUrA53 for picking up on that little error!

The only thing I didn’t like about putting this truck together was when it was time to assemble the shocks. Vanquish really failed on the shock/spring collars. I replaced them with Trx4 shock collar. They threaded on tight but still does the job. Other than that. It’s a solid truck. This truck is so hard to find in the US. It is sold out everywhere. When I found out that one of the largest hobby shops had the last one. I went on a road trip and drove nine hours each way to snatch up the last one. It was well worth it.

Thanks to your video, I just learned about a second E clip I missed in the transmission assembly. I too have had my Phoenix finished for the past few weeks cause I’ve been busy running and upgrading my Scx6. Tomorrow I will be tearing into my Phoenix trans to add the E clip. This my first Vanquish truck. Really don’t want to get this piece of art dirty. But eventually I will have too. This has to be my favorite little truck. Thank you for your content.

It's a cool truck, I like it. I seen a few videos with it by now, I think you're the most honest about its weaknesses, of course your problems reveal the truth. It'll be nice to see how good you can make it. I forgot to comment this earlier, but it's so nice seeing your dog in the clips, very cute! Have a good one there, Craig!

I figured but at least we both have a frame of reference for pricing over time now! It was a bit eye wateringly expensive at release, which is why I was a little disappointed about the tires and its general crawling ability. But the platform has matured and there are some great comp rigs bombing around on the platform now, so we all just needed some time to get our heads around tuning it, I think. Happy hunting.

I’ll be watching this space….Phoenix will be my next rig for sure. Looking forward to seeing you iron out it’s initial rock-crawling short-comings. Interesting that an (almost) stock TRX4 with portals is so capable….low down weight is a key factor like you mentioned:) Until then I’ll be enjoying my TRX4 with ‘Samix’ goodness down low’ - Holmes SVH800 on order 👌👌 Another great and honest video Craig - you’re 6 problems are exposing more weaknesses than many other ‘Phoenix praise’ videos I’ve seen. Don’t get me wrong….it’s a great rig…but in standard form….it’s more of a trail rig….for now😈😈

Thanks, Mark. I hope Vanquish stakeholders see this for the constructive criticism that it is. It's a lovely rig, but as tested, it's a well made, tricked-out trail toy. Like you, I hope to see it conquer the problems soon! Glad you're enjoying your TRX4, meantime!

I have ordered the alu motor and bearing plates , the alu standoffs as well as the incision driveshafts. The tyres on Incision Roswells are OK, but i will probably upgrade these at some point , maybe to Jconcept landmines or PL BFGoodrich. I will also get the machined gear set when released, this should tighten up the transmission. There is a lot of potential there, but with portals it will always be best suited to trailing rather than rock crawling.

U think if u had the straight axle edition u wouldn’t have tipped over as much?
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 10 ай бұрын
Yep. But that break over would have been even worse, which I think is the most challenging element to address on this rig. Thankfully, I think we got it solved in the subsequent videos. I've since had people give me advice here to address this issue, where I'm pretty sure I was the first one to work it out and share with the world, haha! Full circle, thanks youtube :p But yeah you might find the new straight axle edition needs the same treatment if they are using the same shock and link length. Dunno yet, haven't gotten my hands on one!

I'm excited to see the progression on this one with you. I've been collecting parts needed for this kit since I got attracted by it's shiny features lol :). Are we hearing the Holmes servo there? Is it that noticeable in person? I've had my eye on that SHV500. The local guys I met were also recommending the NSDRC servos too (their RS1 looks absolutely bananas on BEC power). I know I just installed it, but I pulled out that dig transmission and put the Sendero Stealth back in with the 11% OD to try. You were using that front-wheel drive just like I was, letting the rear freewheel but not applying power to upset the wheel placement. I'm determined to try C2 when one of the clubs holds an event near me and felt I could use more practice without the extra help :)
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 жыл бұрын
The Holmes servo is noticeable but not crazy loud like some of them. There's usually a trade off and these things are truly well made so for me, it's a fair exchange. There's a follow up video to this that'll publish on Friday or so. There's more to do on this rig yet. Much potential, but it isn't perfect. Not that I'm complaining! Just means more hobby work to do. Twist my arm...

How would you compare the Phoenix vs the Ecto or Sendero?
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 жыл бұрын
Haven't seen an Ecto in person before. The Phoenix is a high quality rig and everything is solid. However, the less solidly made Sendero can outcrawl the Phoenix if both are in stock form. I have yet to test this idea, but modding them both to perform better, I think the Sendero would still outcrawl the Phoenix. And yet, if I could only have one, I really quite like the Phoenix. It isn't an ideal trail rig, with its live axles and single speed transmission. It isn't an ideal crawler, with its lousy tires and high center of gravity. But it is special. Value for money and amazing crawling out if the box, the Sendero wins between these two (and the GS02F is worthy of consideration also, if looking at cracking good crawling ability).
@warren6814
@warren6814 2 жыл бұрын

This truck seems to have a lot of promise. I will say one minor detail that I noticed was (and I can't stand when tire makers do this) is you cannot get symmetrical grip. They basically sell you a directional tire fitted for one side and just slap em on both sides.
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 2 жыл бұрын
Haha, yes! The reversible tire tread - it makes sense and keeps the cost down, so we can't complain too much! But like you, I'm a sucker for symmetry on my donuts. The Micky T Baja Claws are one of the greats I've loved since they released so many years ago. There are quite a few out there that look great and work really well, but hey, I'm happy to have such vast choice and price range - we do have it pretty good, eh? Thanks for the thought, Matt - I totally get you!
