Nice job Chris!! I would give up on the complainers. They are against pretty much against anything the state does and think it’s a hidden agenda. Never hear them complain about any time the State gives them something, except for those who think they don’t get enough ,,,,,,,, hahaha. At least they are making comments!! And lots of them! Hahaha. It is always finished up to the best possible results, given the parameters each job dictates to you! That’s something to be proud of and it also gets notice by all of your fans. We learned from this one the very high cost of doing such a large project wrongly as well. Some of the onus has to be on the owner and the original dam builders (if they are not one in the same). Sometimes people make HUGE mistakes. Fortunately, so far I haven’t been one of them. I built all of the ponds I have needed on my ranch land with permits. It’s all been inspected and because of my good rapport/intentions, I have yet to be turned down. Some great options have been offered by the government to make the project better, even larger than requested as an option. I worked with the government. There were no back doors, sleazy acts, just good business based communications. A lot of free advice and experience was received as well! It’s not the prettiest right now, but when they develop it into a wetlands, it will also be “pretty”. Maybe going back a couple of years from now (it will take at least that long, I’m sure) will reveal an attractive wetlands moving into the hills at the back of the pond. Who knows for sure??

What if you owned land downstream of that dam. Maybe you even have a house to it? You wake up in the middle of the night feeling your house being pushed off the foundation because the water from that crappy dam hits your house. Now you’re scrambling to make sure the kids are safe and you realize a couple sleep in the basement. I am quite right wing myself, but have common sense and sh*t!! I wouldn’t be very god d*mn happy if that was looming over my head. It already failed once. It’s not always a conspiracy.
@zacharydavis2284
@zacharydavis2284 2 жыл бұрын
@@shitloveaduck that "crappy dam" has mostly likely been there since the 50s or 60s and it took a hurricane or other massive rain event to wash it out. A rain even like that could turn that gully to a river or mud flow that could just as easily flood a home. I would understand the state wanting the overflow and/or spillway redone to current code once it washed out but forcing the entire dam to be removed and rebuilt or breached and turned to wetlands is pretty extreme for a dam that's likely been around for 60-70 years if it's really only had the one issue.

Chris, have you ever tried using a propane torch to cut the fabric. If it is the normal tarp-like fabric (not rubber), it cuts like butter and is a fast way to do it. If you attach a 2-3' handle using tie-wraps to the tank, it will save you from having to bend down as much.

Seems a great shame to lose the pond after so many years, I am 52 and come from a time of reason and logic, I was part of renovating a 160 year old house on 23 Ballyholme Esplanade in Bangor Northern Ireland, now the 3 story house was built on a sand foundation and we were all panicking that the architect would make us underpin the house with proper foundations.., the architect arrived and inspected the foundations and asked us how long the house had been standing.., 160 years mate!.., well he said that if the house had been on a sand foundation for that time then he was happy enough.., I guess my point is that in all those years that pond had had one boo boo.., then statistically it was alright.., but we seem to live in an era of (could and might) happen.., its a sad story for sure.
@Vickie-Bligh
@Vickie-Bligh 2 жыл бұрын
Sad story yes, but you have to have responsibility for what you own as well. Chris, on the first episode, called the dam sketchy (he even might have forgotten that he used that word frequently while walking around it). The overflow was undercutting the dam. He said there was a lot of wet ground at the base of the dam. Aerial photos show not only the highway but a home across the highway from this dam. The dam had a boo boo as you described. Had the owner contracted with Chris or someone with his ability & ethics, the state may not have stepped in. But the repair was poor and people's lives were at risk. And not one person's life is worth 'a pretty pond'.
@wfemp_4730
@wfemp_4730 2 жыл бұрын
It's often best to err on the side of caution. The dam's proximity to the high way could result in personal harm or even death if it fails. Besides, having just one incident in the past doesn't mean there won't be any more.
@formhubfar

@@Vickie-Bligh I have been watching Chris for a few years now, surly it would have cost about the same to core the dam with clay?, if you look at what Chris took out it was 90% red clay any way.

@Vickie-Bligh 2 жыл бұрын
@@formhubfar You heard him say it would be at least 6 figures to remake the dam. If what Chris was doing in cutting out the dam is all it would take, I'm sure a deal could've been made. An option for repairing damns like that is a deep trencher and pumping grout or concrete in while trenching. I can't say I've ever seen it done on a pond but if it is okay for industrial and civil stuff no one can really complain about it being adapted to pond damns. Well a government employee with an agenda could complain about anything but it might be worth looking into.
