MORE Aquatic Ecological Succession - This Happens When Leaving Water Outside for 4.5 months

Күн бұрын

What happens after leaving an empty tub of water outside for four and a half months? Aquatic ecological succession happens, resulting in the formation of a new ecosystem, complete with microbes such as bdelloid rotifers, haematococcus algae and spirotrich ciliates, and even insects like Ceratopogonidae mosquitoes. This video updates on what happened to the young ecosystem in the first few months. Aquatic succession is the process by which an empty body of water slowly turns into a biodiverse ecosystem. Through the process of succession that ecosystem constantly changes, and eventually the pond turns into a swamp and later even a forest. We also take a look at the microbial community that has formed in this short period under the new microscope, with phase contrast and dark field.
Enjoy!

I wish I could do this experiment at home, but I live in a country with a heavy mosquito population so it's definitely not advisable. you could do it but you may just need anti mozzie mesh to keep the mosquitoes and other bugs out but still let other things enter it! (if things die/fall on the mesh you could always add it into your ecosystem and replace the mesh)

I wonder how an experiment like this would go if you blocked one type of common species from appearing -- for instance, putting mosquito dunks in the water, which specifically targets aquatic fly larvae. I know the focus is the natural progression of the ecosystem, but I wonder how drastically things would be different with a little human input.

So I've commented this idea before and I know you've seen it but I am going to talk about more. So my idea is to make one ecosphere where you don't put microplastics and then make one that does have microplastics(I think you'll have to put plastic in a food processor. You should get all plastic types, grind them up then put the ratio of plastic according to what the most common plastic that pollutes water. So Polystyrene(styrofoam#6), Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE#4), Polyethylene(PETE#1) and HDPE(#2)) I'll probably do this experiment myself but you should also do it since you will reach many people with your research. I'm excited to see how visible the change is, What animals will die, and will any lifeform thrive? The water samples under a microscope will be crazy!

I think if you maybe put it closer to or even under a tree, it might help promote more succession due to the higher chance of leaves and other organic material falling in. Plus, those mosquitoes will be farther away from you and less likely to get in your house. I'm glad to see you back, by the way!
