I once went for a deadlift PR and misloaded the bar by a full 20kg and still made the lift as I expected to be moving up only by 2.5kg not 22.5kg, there’s definitely a psychological element to it.

I once tricked my brain into letting me succeed on a 1 rep max deadlift by exchanging the third large plate with two smaller ones (on both sides of course ^^) that added up to the same weight. Because I had noticed that three big plates looked more intimidating to me and made me doubt if I could lift it, which made me fail.

Ayee, was surprised and expecting that at the same time. Because i thought that people might have a feeling for how specific weights might feel, but maybe that is only valid for low weights and if you are in very high weights (like that 400 lbs + deadlift) how you feel on that day could result in a big range of possible weight.

Not much data anyway. Mixing it for each lift, maybe you couldn't reach ANY conclusion at all. If they did that with, say, 25 to 50 lifters, then that would be an interesting experiment (re reaching a perhaps statistically significant conclusion).

It is a lot of weight, but don't worry - it's a powerlifting phenomenon called thoractic rounding. It's the rounding of your upper back rather than your lumbar, so your back can handle heavier loads without causing too much strain. It's better than keeping a straight back.
@samtheman7366
@samtheman7366 2 ай бұрын
Thoractic mid to upper back rounding is a thing. But that was definitely lower back rounding there. Granted that even little rounding on the lower end can be beneficial on rare max deadlift occasions, but you must control and recognise the limits there. That 205 was definitely scared cat rounding and just pulling with everything you got. That will do harm and on the long run cause severe issues. Romanian deadlifts are one of the best full body excercises out there, but the technique is hard to master and you definitely should recognise your limits and leave the ego out of the door. @@kevinbae2388

Emotional state greatly effects strength. The easiest one that gives most people strength is to get angry. You get angry at the weight, and decide you'll do what it takes to move that POS, it'll usually move. But if you have structural limitations, as in pain, don't push past it. Fix that ish, and then get mad at a quarter of a ton. The 3rd guys posture was terrible for the deadlift, his shoulders were rounded over before he put any load on them. You want to keep your shoulders flat like you're standing if you can, to protect your rotator cuffs and upper back.

If you do something similar again, I definitely think that a better way to hide the weight would be using some kind of board to block the line of sight from the rack, like a larger round piece of wood that can be slid over the same place where the weights are, rather than the glasses. I'm pretty sure people could see the weight during the deadlift and bench. Really cool concept though and a great video! Can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Woman do sell themselves short all the time. While man oversell theirs reason why man have more deaths in the bench press

No they generally don't train as hard test creates more drive I rarely ever see women go anywhere close to failure in the gym .

Actually there is a big psychological study, that proofs that women perform worse when you tell them there are not as good as men in a topic :) So in my opinion its so stupid that in sport we focus so much about the fact, that men are stronger and faster in average. Women can achive a lot and be pretty good. You also would never tell somebody „yeah have fun running, but you will never be as good as a profi athlet“ when they start a sport. I think we should stop that and focus on what we can do 👍

Bro, you have a one sample statistic with 3 tests, 1 failed and 2 succeeded with something like 4% increase over the perceived PR. And she felt it was heavier.

@@williambrinkmeier1772 Maybe we should not take our own observations as facts. First of all if it was true maybe the part that women get told they a weak influence the training intensity from women a lot. Second of all you only see a small part of women training. And also how close they go to failure is just an guess you take. There are humans that step over their limits and dont express that much and other people that are far away from their limits and already screaming etc (just look at the expression of pain in for example Art sports like dancing. A lot of times the when the dancers fall pretty hard and even breaking their leg etc they just stand up and continue. But i football for example they cry very early) so actually its hard to see from the outside if someone is really going to their limits

It would be impractical just for this video but custom made barbells with the weight difference built-in would be perfect for an experiment. Or maybe an opaque 3D printed cylinder to cover the plates. No need for blindfold/glasses. Love that line at the end - "What you give power to, has power over you." Great video!

Super interesting. If you can redo this test in a way that the weights aren't labelled or covered somehow but without the glasses and blindfolds it might show more difference. Peripheral vision and it's impact on balance and stability has a massive influence on strength.
