I'm newly retired and just beginning to explore trying my hand a painting in the wonderful world of watercolor. Yesterday, I happened upon one of your lessons explaining the basics of watercolors....; pigments, the color wheel, transparency vs opaque, etc. You explained so clearly and answered many of the questions I have been struggling to understand. Thank you! I'm excited to begin learning to paint; however, I'm in the process of clearing possessions and preparing my home to sell. My kids have invited me to move in with them in Colorado; therefore, I won't have much time for painting but hope to dedicate an hour a day. I'm so excited and grateful to you for sharing your gift, talent, and personal experiences with us. Blessings! Emma

My most favourite. I have a small magazine picture of a very old beech tree forest with sunlight filtering through autumn leaves. The shafts of light defeated me as I'm total novice. This video gives me hope.

Something I really struggle with, and would appreciate some mentoring with is how to breakdown a reference to paint it - to determine not just composition, but also would it be best to do wet on wet, wet on dry, does it need an undercoat - if so how do I determine what color the undercoat should be, how to plan out the process - what needs to be done first, second, etc. How to break it all down and plan it out from inspiration to completion, determining what are the best processes to get the finished product I want. If you could do a session on that, it would be much appreciated. You are such an amazing teacher, and really help to make things clear for me.

Hello from Scottsdale Arizona 🌵I love your work! It’s very inspiring and the other day I painted along with you painting the berries and pine cones.. I don’t mean any offense, but I’ve gotta say, I’ve never ever seen anyone “stretch” paper with staples Have you tried using gummed paper tape ? It would spare you all that work of taking out the staples and leaving holes in the paper from all those staples… it looks kinda time consuming I also would add that using the gummed paper tape, doesn’t destroy the paper. I too was a professional custom picture framer. I don’t ever recall seeing anyone do this in all the 20+ years archival framing for galleries and museums. I’ve matted and framed watercolor paintings where the artist wants to show the deckle edges and have their painting floated on a mat board. While getting my degree in printmaking at ASU, I took 2 semesters of watercolor painting. We were taught how to stretch the paper very differently. We also soaked the whole sheet in a basin for about 15 min. then we used a damp sponge to remove puddles of water and then used the gummed paper tape to a board. It’s been more than a decade since I’ve painted in watercolor, and my W&N paints are still good! ☺️ (life happens but I’m back to painting again) Watercolor is so much more enjoyable than acrylic paints. But I do love oil painting and have been mostly doing that with mixed media for last decade. Now everybody is into watercolor, I forgot how much I love it 🥰 I love your paintings and your technique and you’re truly inspiring and I appreciate you, but tbh seeing those the staples are driving me crazy lol 😂 but to each their own I guess 🤷‍♀️
@shelleypriorfineart

I have tried both methods - tape and staples. Personally I do not care for the tape. I’ve had it lift while trying to paint whereas the staples stay put. Gummed tape doesn’t save me any time if I later have to soak and scrape tape off of my board. The tape on the paper needs to be cut off as well. I don’t care for the look of the staple holes either but I do know that this can either be trimmed or will not show under the mat. I know many artists use the tape but it has not worked well for me. Staples are actually very quick. I have a video on it as well.

Hi Shelley, I always look forward to your videos. What you are able to do in a few hours I will work on for days being new to painting. This one, my first attempt, did not wait till my paper was completely dry before removing the masking fluid and between that and the roughness from the salt ended up with a whole in my paper. The second attempt made the masked areas spots too large but as usual had a good time and will probably try again 😊

I like your suggestion. Thanks very much and I'm adding it to the list. I have seriously contemplated a book, although publishing is a tremendous expense with all the risk to the author. Then there's the whole marketing and distribution (ugh). Maybe sometime down the road when I have more spare time and money. Meanwhile, videos are a quick and affordable solution which also offer replays whenever you want :) Thanks for watching!

If it were me, I'd try Raw Sienna, or a bit of Burnt Sienna with a smidgeon of Cad orange mixed together. Try them on paper first, as a sample. I've not heard of Quin Gold being discontinued. It's a wildly popular color, can't imagine they'd (art stores?) cancel it. Good luck!

From the Winsor and Newton website - Please note: Pigment PR206 will be changed to PR179 soon. To reflect this pigment change, the name of this colour will also change to Transparent Gold Deep with the resulting colour an extremely close substitute of Quinacridone Gold.
