Which kind of pool chlorine to use? Liquid or granular?
For starters, liquid chlorine is the same thing as your bleach - sodium hypochlorite. Thousands of pool owners have used bleach to chlorinate their pools for years.
Next is calcium hypochlorite, or common granular chlorine. This chlorine is safe, easy to use and apply. It's also lighter than one gallon of bleach or chlorine which can weigh about 8 lbs.
So which one to use?
Liquid chlorine will take care of 99% of your chlorine needs. Not only is it great for weekly chlorination, but it won't add anything to your pool that you don't want. Calcium hypochlorite contains calcium and over-use can increase your CH. Places that already have hard fill water will want to stay away from cal hypo and use liquid chlorine.

I had a 17' long 4' high and 8' wide pool for 3 years and I use to pour 2 jugs of liquid chlorine in out pool but only if we had a bad rain. Always just scrubbed the pool every day real quick and let pool filter to most of the work. But anyway if it ever turned green a little these 2 jugs had it crystal clear in 2 days then back to just stabilizing pucks and quick scrubs and filtration and that's it. Easy stuff.

Liquid Chlorine typically has a pH of 13 - - so it will also raise the pH in the pool after adding it to the pool. I know this from personal experience.

Amen! Great work on this video. I've have been in the commercial pool business for 20 years, and I've always tried to help educate & save my retail customers money by choosing liquid over other sanitizers. Including the dreaded overuse of chlorine pucks. Additionally, I help clear up, or explain to customers many other common myths or exaggerations our industry may promote, well intentioned or not. Sure these other chemicals all have some specific benefits, and I'm probably considered a fool for letting them leave my store only spending $20, instead of the $200, other stores might do. Really enjoy your videos.

My pool is 25,000 gallons and was turning green. I just put this liquid chlorine in and will see what happens. I may have over did it because I used the entire gallon at one time. HMM. We have had very hot weather and my pool temp has Ben from 84 to 89 degrees so warm water grows green stuff. LOL

With a 32K gal inground plaster pool and autochlorinator (3" tab) system. Would they stop using the tabs and switch to liquid Sodium Hypochlorite entirely? What is the formula to determine daily dosing rate? How about formula for ~weekly Shock rate? I and assuming target daily chlorine level to be between 2-3ppm?

Thanks for explaining the difference but I do have a question. You prefer the liquid because it's calcium free and won't raise PH levels, but I'm having trouble raising my water hardness. Should I use the granulated form to help with this problem? I have a 28k gallon inground with a DE filter. Also having a problem raising PH to proper levels. I fill the 1lb DE powder cup with Soda Ash, dump in a bucket then mix with water and add to pool 3 times. It raises but not to the level of ok according to test strip. I've also added 10lbs of calcium and water still soft. We've had a lot of storms lately don't know if that would bring levels back down considering it is adding more untreated water to pool. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

First you need to get rid of the guess strips and get a good test kit. I use the Taylor K-2006 and have made several detailed videos on how to use it. The pH range is 7.2 - 7.8 so if you're in that range you're good. 2 1/2 lbs. of soda ash should raise your pH 0.2 for your size pool. You can also use 20 mule team borax or arm and hammer "washing" soda, not baking soda. That's for the TA. For the calcium, you'll use calcium chloride which directly affects the hardness. That range is 150 - 250ppm. You'll use 2 lbs. to increase the hardness 10ppm for your size pool. It may take a couple of days for the chloride to fully dissolve being it's granular. Calcium is mainly for plaster pools so if you have vinyl or fiberglass stick with the lower 150ppm and you should be fine. No need to raise it higher.
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373
@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373 8 жыл бұрын
Also, be sure the TA is in range of 80 - 120ppm. That will help lock in the pH and not cause what's called pH bounce. Baking soda for that. 2 1/2 lbs. will raise it 10ppm but will also raise the pH.

Guess strips lol. That's probably my problem. I added the calcium 3 days ago and waited till today to check the levels. Unfortunately I added soda ash because ph level was low. As soon as I did my sparkling water got cloudy. This is my six season with the pool and I've gotten pretty good with keeping a good clean pool and something told me not to trust the strip. Water was clear and dry to the touch ( not slippery when rubbing fingers together under water). I will be getting that kit and watching videos on how to use. Thanks for your help.

My pool was getting kinda green again. Ph was fine but chlorine was pretty close to zero. I added 2 cups of liquid chlorine and like 8 cups of liquid shock. Now it's back to clear. Did I over do it?

Effectiveness of the FC is dependent upon factors such as strength, freshness, CYA and pH level, organic matter in the pool, pool size and usage. etc... What size pool do you have? What kind of filter? 10 cups in 1k gallons of water is different than 10 cups in 20k gallons. A little more info would tremendously help.

You can use cal hypo with softer water. I use and recommend liquid due to the fact that many pools already have hard water. Cal hypo will cloud up as well, so keep that in mind.

Works perfectly. Make sure you sweep after adding liquid chlorine. It's heavier than water and will sink which can bleach out the liner.

I've used sodium hypochlorite (bleach) in hundreds of pools in 3 different states, different water sources and climates, and never had one problem. Walmart liquid bleach is fine, although slightly less in strength. Walmart's Pool Essentials liquid chlorine is fine to use. There are many reasons why a pool goes green, and none can be ruled out with a full set of chemical numbers and filter type.

Dry is 60% chlorine by weight, liquid is 10% chlorine by VOLUME (apples/oranges). So at a glance you of course say you want the concentrated one, right? However, at $5.44/gal from Walmart right now it takes $0.57 to raise 10,000 gal pool by 1 ppm with liquid chlorine. Dry shock at $6/1 lb bag costs $0.75 to raise 10,000 gal pool by 1 ppm. Dry shock costs almost 1/3 more and will also raise up your calcium hardness too high if you use it continuously for maintenance. He's not misinforming anyone.

Liquid shock and liquid chlorine are the same. They're both sodium hypochlorite. It's just called different names for marketing purposes. Shock is a process of maintaining a FC level high and long enough to kill the organic matter in the pool. Shocking a pool is a process, not a product we buy. Thanks for the question.

@@cleanpoolspa-ultimateswimm6373 I've recently been turned on to the liquid chlorine approach for my hot tub after using chlorinating granules for a few years. I have a UV bulb (Clear Ray) and it seems to eat through chlorine. Anyhow, to maintain a decent level of Free and Total Chlorine I have to put in about 1/4 cup of Liquid Chlorine each morning and about 1/4 per person/per hour in the tub after use. So far so good. Chlorine levels are decent and water is clear (other levels are balanced as well). That said, do I still need to "Shock" once a week with my non-chlorine shock? Or any shock for that matter?
