Lots good written by Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler. The Maltese Falcon is wonderful. Best wishes with your reading choices.

You have some of my favorite ones in there. In particular, I love the Brother Cadfael series. I am no specialist of the medieval period, but I feel like the research was very well done. I have the second and third omnibus like thenone you are holding. Hopefully one day I will get my hands on the other volumes too.

Hello, Aaron. New subscriber here; I learned about you on Katie's channel. I think we have very similar tastes in mysteries: I'm re-reading right now the Miss Marple book that you just discussed--The 4:50 from Paddington--but here, in the US, it is titled What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw. I read it about 45 years ago, so it feels like I'm reading it for the first time! 😉Last week, I read Murder on the Orient Express! Lovely to "meet" you. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

Hi Pat! I didn't know that about the title, that's interesting, I used to get the train from Paddington everyday but I guess it makes less sense to non-londoners. Did you know the ending of Murder on the Orient Express? I've avoided it because it's the only one I know the end already.

@@AaronReadABook, Hi Aaron! I did know the ending to Orient Express because I read it a long, long time ago. But I had forgotten a lot of the details, so it was still a fun read. I still haven’t seen the movie! 😊

Just a comment about the Miss Marple movies/tv series available. There are the 1960's films with Margaret Rutherford. Then the TV series -- the first with Joan Hickson (whom Agatha Christie hoped would play Miss Marple one day). She is considered the perfect Miss Marple by many people (including myself:)). She was already 80 years old when she filmed the first episode (Murder at the Vicarage). The series ended in 1992 with The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side, when she was 86. She filmed a total of 8 book adaptations. Two other actresses took up the role. from 2004-2007, Geraldine McEwan played Marple for 12 episodes. Julia McKenzie starred in 11 episodes from 2008 to 2013. Both are excellent actors, but I think once you've watched Joan Hickson, it's hard to think of anyone else in the role.

Thanks! I should watch the ones I've read, l have read Murder at the Vicarage so that seems like a good place to start. I also need to watch more Poirot as I've seen hardly any of that either.

Arkady from Gorky Park was good. I went as far as Polar star, but that was 25 years ago, so need to revisit the character

Nice picks. I love the big three as well. I'm hit and miss on Peter Wimsey but when he's good he's great. (I loved Strong Poison, and I recommend The Nine Tailors and Murder Must Advertise if you haven't read those. Strong Poison aside, I tend to prefer Wimsey without Harriet Vane.) I've read a few of the American 'hardboiled' classics, but I prefer them in movie form most of the time. The Maltese Falcon is a decent book but a great film.

I've not got to those Wimseys yet. Yeah I loved The Maltese Falcon film, it's hard for the books to live up to the classic noirs.

Like you, I like the 'big three'. I've been reading a couple of Holmes books by James Lovegrove - they're not bad too. Wimsey I'm a fan of, favourites there, Clouds of Witness and the short stories. Three other detective favourites, Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear (private detective between the wars), Lady Hardcastle by T.E. Kinsey (historical, good humour) and Ruth Galloway by Elly Griffiths (archaeology, Norfolk based)... her Harbinder Kaur series is also very good. Probably my favourite crime series - of a sort - is the Charlie Parker books by John Connolly, but those are paranormal and quite creepy so not everyone's cup of tea. Maigret's good - I could go on and on...

The comments on this video have sent me on a book buying binge 😂I really like the sound of Lady Hardcastle, Ruth Galloway, and Maisie Dobbs. I did read the first Charlie Parker book but I didn't really like it, I'm sure they improve but it was a bit too gruesome for me.

Of course, I love Christie. Besides Marple and Poirot, I really like the Superintendant Battle books. I just finished The Seven Dials Mystery and it was really fun. Towards Zero is one of Christie’s best, in my opinion. The Miss Silver mysteries are quite good. Miss Silver is a retired governess, so another old lady detective. And for someone who is not quite as old, the Vera Stanhope books by Ann Cleeves. You already know I love Inspector Wexford. If you ever want something just really silly, I confess to enjoying the Agatha Raisin series by MC Beaton. I’ve only “read” those via audiobook. I’d also recommend the Jackson Brodie series by Kate Atkinson.

I didn't know Kate Atkinson had crime books too, that's interesting. I have only read Cards on the Table with Battle in, and that has everyone in. I have the first Miss Silver on kindle but haven't got to it. The Quiche of Death is such a brilliant name I need to check out Agatha Raisin.

@@AaronReadABook Don't judge Miss Silver by that first book. It's okay, but the series is much better than the first book might lead you to believe! Atkinson has a new Brodie novel coming out this year. It's been a while, so I'm going to reread the series in preparation for the new one. John Banville also writes crime novels. One series is about a Dublin coroner in the 50's. He started out writing as Benjamin Black, but now writes them under his own name. The other series of his is set in the same universe as his Quirke books, with a young police detective, St. John Strafford, as the protagonist. Right now, the two series have come together, with Quirke and Strafford working together. I don't know if Banville plans to continue with that arrangement or if he'll write them separately again. I quite liked the first two Strafford books. I am kind of ambivalent about Quirke, but maybe I need to revisit those novels.

I’ve just realized that I don’t really have a favorite detective. I really enjoy Kathy Reichs series but Temperance Brennan isn’t titled a detective even though she figures everything out through the science 🧐

I watched some of the show Bones which I think that inspired. I tend to go for the less modern ones because forensics makes everything less believable now.
