Hi Bob. I have sometimes thought suicide was the only option..... then I look at my two dogs and think... nope, I have to stick around for them. My dogs have literally saved my life as well as providing me with love and companionship. Thanks for sharing your depression struggle with honesty, compassion, and integrity.

@Susan Shearer, I think there are many people who have had the same thought, that suicide is a good option. I would never judge anyone for having that thought, as I have hoped I would never wake up again after my husband died. And although it is unlikely I will ever be a full-time nomad, I hope to at least be a vacation nomad. And like you, Bob has lightened my load. the wonderful people he interviews have also given me something to look forward to. I hope you won’t mind if I pray for you, and I wish you every good thing.

I took my German Shepherd service dog out on the road with me and in 12 days he started getting bloody nose so we had to come off the road but we had already sold our house so I have to move into a cheesy apartment. He died about the time the pandemic started from numerous cancers. I have never been the same not even with six dogs that came after him. Currently have a pretty nice little Siberian Husky just a year old. Looking at going back out on the road in our 21' travel trailer. I think that's the only thing that lifts my depression

I'm in a hatchback Subaru a tent and blm land that is fairly close to work. Even 52 miles round trip a day, the cost of rent in the closest town is still more than what I'm doing. Lake is close enough to use as a fridge with a waterproof bag, fire pit, propane stove and VERY QUIET! I'm never buying a house or renting an apartment ever again. Pretty soon I'm buying a van or a cheap box truck. I love this way of life, it's super cheap, fairly easy and I am totally free save going to work, which is only to get me enough to make ends meet and save for future travels.

I am setting out on my nomadic vision quest at the end of this month. I've been manifesting this lifestyle since my late teens, planning for it to happen at this exact age (early 50s), and the time has finally come to go! I'm starting out in my brand new Mazda SUV - I bought it for the safety and technology as I don't want to worry about breaking down or needing to learn how to repair things. I'll be car dwelling and tent camping until I order my Runaway Camper and go to FL to pick it up (planning for early Sept), then I'll be heading West to meet up with the like-minded people I've been following here on KZfaq for the past few years! I'm really looking forward to meeting you, Bob, and can't wait to find my place of service within the community. Peace!

Hey Bob, middle of the night and up watching your channel one after the other and celebrating that you are living the life you choose. I have a great friend, Camille, who is about to embark on the life you are living. Hubs and I are sixty two and we bought acres in the mountains and built a one room plus bath cabin over three years. It is just about completed and naysayers say constantly ...you can't do that....lol...seriously? at sixty two why not? I have had two cancer diagnoses and in treatment for second one now, other in remission. WHY would I wait for long term social security and sit in a house costing over a thousand a month for mortgage alone? Then add costs of electric and water and more then all I was doing was sitting in a tiny cubicle...but people think I can't sit in a tiny cabin. Well, setting out to prove them wrong. I realize this is not the same thing you are doing but thought process of naysayers and those trying to tell me I need multiple bathrooms and electric and wifi and oh what will you do about this and what about that just amuses me now. I quit my job, have insurance due to hubs ex military career. I have made a choice that makes sense for me. If someone wants a condo in the sky in the city, do it but why do we impose how someone needs to live? What is that thing that says you must do it my way. Shaming people is a game. We watch youtube on a large tv in our bedroom for now and realized I had not subscribed on my personal laptop. So did now to help you get that 300k. God bless you and all your caravan friends, juanita mae

I personally can Not fathom why anybody would want to live that “standard” life that you described above. I don’t understand why anyone would strive for such a mundane life. That to me, feels like a prison of sorts. Why is this the life that is expected of us and why are those of us that do not want that kind of life ridiculed? TWO MORE FIRES: My mother stopped for lunch and discovered her Class A was on fire under the hood. The fire extinguisher didn't do any good. Soon, the fire was in the cabin, and all she could do was take pictures as the gas tank exploded, then the propane tank exploded. She lost everything (except the camera and the phenomenal pictures she was taking. Everything she owned in the world was gone. ---- A few months earlier, drove past an elderly couple by the side of the road, watching their Class C be consumed in flames. It was especially sad to see because the old woman was crying so hard as her husband tried to comfort her. ---- So for me, it's going to be the Cargo Van I'm saving for, nothing bigger, no way.

@@Randylj1 Thank your for caring and for replying, Randy. Since only the steel frame sitting on the ground remained, there is no way to know the cause. My guess is a gasoline leak over the hot engine; because it was when she stopped at the restaurant the the engine burst into flames through the front grill, and those flames only laughed at her little fire extinguisher.

RE: CHOOSING A LIVING VEHICLE FOR A WALKER OR WHEELCHAIR. I have been planning my nomad life for 5 years now and have finally settled on getting a shuttle bus with a handicap lift. I will use that for personal entry and exit and for moving things in and out. After gutting the seats outing will have a big space with lots of big windows!! The big reason I do not favor a cargo trailer is safety. When I hit the road I will be a 71 yr old woman traveling alone. If I get in a situation that is uncomfortable, especially in the middle of the night, in a shuttle bus all I have to do is get into the driver's seat and leave. With a trailer I'd have to get out of the trailer into my tow vehicle and either hook up the trailer, maybe in the dark, or leave it. I love the shuttle bus option. Oh, and they are available very reasonably. Good luck!

My experience is, A person who has a lot to give, is of service to a cause... will find a lot more happiness, and will soon forget what bugs them. When we focus on what we can do for others...our perceptions shift. Isolation leads to rummination which can cause depression, in turn, a negative spirit. Community is good. Working for the community good, sharing from experience, is best drug to combat the blues. Experience is the best teacher.

For small SUV's, from my research I'd recommend Toyota Rav 4 hybrid (40mpg, run forever, good power, AWD available), or Honda CRV hybrid which doesn't get as good of gas mileage but would probably last forever and is worth checking out. Ford Explorer hybrids are pretty good too, I think you'd have to test drive the models and see what you like. Hybrids definitely seem like the way to go if you like to travel! I'm not sure if the Rav 4 has the same kind of idle mode climate control as a Prius, but that would be a huge upside. You could probably tow a small trailer (like a teardrop or tent trailer), do the rooftop tent thing, or put in a basic build...tighter than a van, but serviceable. This seems like it would be a good compromise between a Prius, a van, and a 4wd. I'm just window-shopping though ;)

Your helping a lot of people with 100% accurate info . Your a very good man.I relate to your engine knowledge the most. Overwork a gas engine that is to small for an Rv and an Exhaust valve will burn before its time, $ 2000 repair. Or it will overheat the Automatic transmission and slip the clutch packs out of it, $4500 repair. Most any repair on a Diesel is Between $1.000 -$5.000, also Diesel fuel is more Expensive than gas fuel is and additionally, for the newer Deisels you must buy and add DEF. [ Diesel Exhaust Fluid ) TOO many hidden costs with the Diesel for folks on a limited budget. Thanks for what your doing.

I had a 93 jeep Grand Cherokee. I took out the back seat, 4-inch lift, Detroit Locker in the rear, and bullet proof custom skid plates. I specifically found the 4 l engine with the Toyota trans because it is a 300,000-mile marriage. I had room to sleep and the ability to go anywhere I wanted. I tested my creation on the five most difficult trails in Moab Utah. The skid plates proved their worth. Enough clearance but not so much lift to decrease off canter stability.

Places where alcohol flows freely will decrease safety, increase annoying behaviors and most like create problems. Not sure if anybody shared this in the video...have a plan A B and C if you park, an alternate parking place to go to. if A does not work out backup B or C might. It's a little bit more work yet being proactive pays off.

I think the mistake people make is that going full-time in RV will deliver them from depression. It is important to emphasize the fact that you bring the same perspective you have on life (depression, negativity, boredom) to RV life and cannot leave it in the stick and brick community. You are who you are and ONLY you can control who you are and you travel with you so changing from within is needed folks!

one day a few years back i read that Nutmeg is a cure for memory issues so i went out bought me a jar of organic nutmeg and everytime i have a cup of coffee i put one or two shakes of nutmeg in my coffee you could do this with any drink it was the only way i thought i could add this amazing spice to my menu of foods to eat ... i started this in about 2013 and i tell you this , i truly believe it has caused me a huge memory improvement .. there are other things one can do for good memory health also but the Nutmeg is the one thing i stayed faithful to and i do think thee is something to this ... try it.

I think the blanket answer about school buses was a little off. I have 6 window bus with a Chevy 3500 van front.. It has a gas engine. So it's no different than most RV's. $2600, 100k miles, 2003. In excellent condition, freshly serviced, new tires. Picked it up from government auction and drove it home 700 miles from NJ (with a stop in MD to visit family) to KY no problems. Planning on skooliepalooza and the RTR this year.

Hi Bob, first time ever commenting. Ramiro in Surprize Arizona. Been watching you for about a year now. Thanks for all the good info you provide. Working towards retirement and looking forward to the nomad life. Thanks for everything. You are a true inspiration. I'll be retiring in 5 years. Learning as much as I can now to be ready for the ultimate freedom in retirement. Take care.😂🎉😊

5th wheels are a true $ Pit!!! They are made of the cheapest materials available. We bought a beautiful one new for 65K and had nothing but problems. It was a 2006 Grand Junction and we finally gave up and sold it! It lived in our climate controlled garage and wasn’t used often, but we had to put thousands into repairs over the years & the roof looked like it was going to have problems. We have a really great truck so don’t want to buy a van but are afraid to purchase another trailer.

@@Hilddaa , your goals should really be aimed a little bit higher 🙃 remember that this lifestyle can be a means to an end. Surely not your life aspiration. But yes. Living this life to learn how to live small and to grow away from the consumerism way of life. ....sure but what next. You sound young enough for there to be able to be a lot more 🙃 blessings in abundance here from South Africa and I truly hope that you achieve all your goals insha'Allah. Make sure that you have fun in everything you do and wherever you go bring the blessing of fun with you . . . . . .

My husband just came out of retirement in march to work at a job 15 minutes from our home. It’s awesome. When we moved here 6 years ago we had no idea this big job would come to a town next to ours. It’s a huge blessing. We are glad God worked that our and just in time too. Our youngest daughter is finishing up her doctorate in pharmacy and she needed our financial help to get through it. I always told my Girls God will make a way. And he has. She’s going to have student loan debt but with any doctor in pharmacy or medical you will. the big issue is being able to afford a home in those first few years after graduating. But we got that covered! Nothing wrong with living in a small Rv or tiny house on our property until she’s financially stable. And dang I wish I could of had her salary wow ! She’s not going to have to worry. I was in healthcare but I became disabled at 47. And now I’m on disability but my husband who is an electrician is making good money. Praise God ! We bought a class A fix it up took one trip in it ( Hated It ). Sold it making around 2 k profit. I’m a van lady. I’ve had one for 40 years. So I want a class B. We might buy one this year. Move our daughter with it to where she’s doing a residency. Then we will do a conversion . Simple conversation. I have everything to do it. I have gorgeous cedar for the countertop. And a sink. And just all the little things , solar ect.. I thought about a class C and a short bus. But I know I can count on a van. I would love to travel one day. My hubby is an electrician so he can work anywhere. And we are close to being able to just have him work a little thought out the year and travel the rest. One day! I’m just not going to leave our huskies, maybe with 2 but not 4. I love Siberian huskies! But I think I might want an Australian shepherd a small one one day. All mine are rescued and we are really bonded. Mr wells you are the best ! Maybe one day I’ll met you. I hope so. If not here on earth maybe in heaven one day. But I think we both have a few decades lefts so it’s possible. Thank you for all you do leslye

Older suburbans make great tow vehicles and you can load em up. Get the 5.7 for gas mileage and cheap parts. I bought my 1999 for $3500 and have put 30,000 miles on it so far. Looking for cargo trailer to convert for cooking...ect.

Not everyone gets/has dementia( there are about 100 types of dementia, some are caused by medication-check the side effects; parkinson's not the disease-the medication! Statins can affect some people; some anti-depressants and Bi-Polar; BP, etc... all dementias are not Altziemer's type) We all have a slower memory recovery as we age but we do remember. Our memory bank (brain) is on overload because we're so full of information. Remember the younger folks grew up with computers that hold all the memory, we didn't !!!! I'm not a "Nomad" but I really enjoy your shows and I learn a lot ! You introduce us to such nice people and you're a wonderful person !

Living nomadically is most definitely not for the faint hearted. I’ve been in my rancho el Rae, 16 ft.1975, for 500$ and have done most of the restoration and am still fixing it. I knew most was just minor but it still needs to have things done three years later. I have no regrets.

My 97 Dodge Diesel Truck has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. I have always been a real stickler for maintenance. But at 22 years old, the only problems I have ever had with it has always been due to normal wear and tear. Only failure with it was the radio! I like you have a real dislike for Ford products. I had a brand new Mercury once that within 3 years, it was a total piece of crap! I bought it new and took care of it, but it was crap. I have also had great luck with Chevy's, My last Tahoe was 16 years old and had 260K on it before it developed enough problems to get rid of it. Just my 2 cents worth! Realy enjoy your videos.

Being aware that things can go wrong in a Class C, in my extremely limited experience, I do better in it with a bad back than the class b, a little less schlepping stuff between seats and bed. But other than the smaller space and odd shaped roof for solar, the class b was great. More room for solar on the flat roof of the class c and also better on a regular van. The best tips I have received were learned on your channel, the Forum and from Carolyn's RV Life. Excellent E-rated tires, minimize and evenly distribute the weight inside as much as possible, keep the preventative maintenance up, and have an emergency fund. Rig selection is no joke. It's hard because no one system is perfect and everything has its pros/cons, it's finding the thing that's the most doable that brings the least trouble and most happiness. I love the topic. Thanks as always. Kona, precious dancing baby! Same color and size as my Max. Hope to meet KC sometime. The dogs can dance!

So I have another comment on another issue. Staying cool. Check out artic air. It is a portable swamp cooler at Walmart for about 40 bucks. It pulls 9 watts on high if you don't turn the light off, but it won't work in high humidity environments. In dry conditions it makes the heat tolerable and at night it will actually get your van to cold. I live in grand junction Colorado and so far it's been very reliable and we see days in to the high 90s. Just remember that it takes water, so you will need to add at least 1/4 gallon per day to your reserve
