I've had many friends and family both in Washington and outside of the state ask how life is like in Seattle (specifically Capitol Hill) now after a chaotic 2020 with the pandemic and protests, so I made this video to show from a first hand experience how the city has rebounded.
In this video, I've focused on Capitol Hill since it was ground zero for the CHOP/CHAZ and the protest activities the city experienced this past summer. It is also the premier location for living and entertainment for Seattleites prior to the pandemic and protests, so I figured you all would want to see this neighborhood most.
Many people have started to move back into Seattle downtown corridor, but have avoided Capitol Hill with the fear of it not being safe - I spent time roaming the core of the neighborhood where the autonomous zone was to show you all first hand the current state.
Hope you guys enjoyed the video!

Phamever hello!!! The same situation, moving to Seattle in 3 months. Can you say a little bit about job seeking, how is the situation due COVID? Is it easy to find a job?
@Phamever
@Phamever 3 жыл бұрын
@@ReeeeYful That's awesome to hear you're becoming a Seattle-ite soon! So COVID is being managed very well here - most people here are aligning to mask wearing and social distancing protocols without any issues so our numbers are really good. Depending on what industry you are in I can't 100% say, but food/retail/service jobs are rebounding as businesses are opening back up again. Jobs in tech of course are doing fine, I have been recruited consistently so I'm assuming that though it's not as plentiful as prior to COVID - there are opportunities to be had. I would suggest starting your job search now to get a feel for what it's like - if you know anyone out here already, ask to use their address so you can begin looking for work. Most job interviews now are done virtually so you can get started and have a better idea of your prospects even before coming out here. When I moved to Los Angeles during the previous recession (2009-2010) I had began my job search from Seattle, and landed a role in LA 2 weeks after arriving there. Wishing you an early welcome to Seattle and sending good vibes your way! :)

Hey thanks for the video :) My bf recently moved to Seattle for a job and I will be starting law school there soon as well. His place is in Cap Hill and I haven't seen any videos online about how the transportation is like in the city. I see in your video lots of people walk but is the bus/subway still good to use?
@Phamever
@Phamever 3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad it was helpful/enjoyable for you! Yes public transportation never really stopped, it was limited for a bit though I'm pretty sure it's pretty much back to normal now. The city has been really good about keeping the lifeline trains/buses/rail cars operating to ensure that those who don't drive can get to and from as needed. You shouldn't have any issues getting around at all! Welcome to Seattle soon Diana! :)

Thanks Ian! I'm not 100% sure myself when it officially disbanded, but I remember coming to the area in September and it was for the most part disbanded in the main corridors. Though I did hear that the north end of Cal Anderson park still had stragglers until sometime in December when it was fully cleared.

Thank you for relieving some of my fears! We've got a trip planned to Seattle and ONP in July, and as I'm sure you're aware, I'm coming across all this negative commentary and it's been freaking me out a little! We've always lived in rural areas and suburbs, so we don't have a lot of experience in bigger cities. ;) Do you have any advice on areas to avoid, ways to be smart there? Definitely will check out your other videos! :)
@Phamever
@Phamever 3 жыл бұрын
Of course Lauren! When it comes to bigger cities - you'll see things for the first time (homeless people) that you won't necessarily experience in smaller towns or suburbs, but the best thing to do is just to keep alert! The key is to keep yourself out of areas that are sketch - if you're feeling uncomfortable then your intuition is probably right so remove yourself from that area. Most of Seattle is pretty safe - just don't wonder more south than International district and you'll be fine. Stay in more populated and people dense areas the first couple days you get here so you have time to get a feel for things, then you can venture off with more confidence. Do some research to make plans for where you'll go each day and take a look at google maps to see where everything is relative to each other so you can reduce the chance of getting lost. Worse case, if you get lost my best advice is to just call an uber or lift and have them take you to your next destination nearby and reset your tour of the city lol Just remember - don't go more south than International District aka Chinatown! :) it's really not that bad, but for someone who's new to bigger cities the homeless people can be intimidating so I suggest just don't put yourself there. Oh and stay out of Pioneer Square - if you really want to see the original downtown Seattle than you can go there but stay on 1st & 2nd Ave and don't venture out of there. If I were you guys I would get a rental and drive out to some of the beautiful waterfall hikes 30 minutes east of the city! The city is great, but we have a ton of amazing nature to see and experience also! :)

Why didn't you show the huge increase in homeless drug addicts roaming the streets. Also, the police precincts that are still surrounded with barriers.
@Phamever
@Phamever 3 жыл бұрын
What you see in my video is frankly pretty much what you would find walking through the city now. I live adjacent to seattle police department headquarters - there’s been no activity hence I didn’t find a need to film it. Also, most residents don’t visit the police station daily. In terms of the homeless and drug addicts - the city has significantly less of them since Chaz was broken up so that’s why you didn’t see them in the video. If the homeless situation was still as it was previously, I wouldn’t have the ability to hide it from my footage - considering that I’m filming in the most popular areas of the city. My goal is to show viewers from the perspective of someone living here, not as a reporter hunting for the right footage to portray a specific story...

@@Phamever As someone who has lived in Seattle for 40 years, I would disagree with the drug and homeless issue. I lived in Capital Hill for 5 years, including during the CHAZ/CHOP issue. While the group has disappeared, the increase of homelessness has become worse. I could walk right outside my apartment and find a pile of needles and watch people shoot up in front of me with no worries that I saw them. This is my hometown and I hope and pray that people get the help they need and the safety will improve for residents.
@Phamever
@Phamever 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm I grew up in Seattle and have been here most of my life - I’m not sure where you’re currently residing at, but I’m right in the midst of downtown/cap hill currently and don’t see the extent of the issues you’re seeing. During Chaz yes, right now not so much... Homelessness was always a part of Seattle (and any major city) as far back as I can remember from my childhood even - the drug situation is more recent and I do agree that people need help, but the current situation in the city I would say is nowhere near as bad as it was during Chaz and the years prior to that. I’m not saying it won’t get bad again, but it’s not so currently.

Downtown and Cap Hill are the oldest areas of Seattle - it's natural for tree roots to bulge up and ruin sidewalks or older buildings to deteriorate. These areas are over 130 yrs old so like any other historical areas it's normal - part of the charm.

@Jean juju Absolutely it is. As with any major cities, there are questionable areas - though even the less ideal areas of Seattle are far safer than those of other cities that are smaller than Seattle even. If you do research and pick a neighborhood that fits your needs then you will be happy. Overall Seattle is a safer than average city compared to the rest of America.
