One of my favorite things about living in Seattle is the quick and easy access to nature - REAL nature, not a city park trail. I grew up with the ability to jump out for day trips or even week long trips to experience the mountains, ocean, waterfalls and everything in between so that's what I find is the unique magic of this city. You can be in a metropolitan center one minute and 30 minutes later be out in the wilderness!
In this vlog, I take you all on a virtual hike with me through the mountains to get to one of the most beautiful waterfalls near Seattle - Franklin Falls!
It's winter so there will be tons of snow, but that doesn't deter Seattleites from enjoying nature's playground. Below are more details to help you plan for experience the same hike effectively (and prevent you from the downer of getting a ticket from parks and recreation):
Tourists can easily rent a small sedan - come early and be back in the city by early afternoon and have the rest of the day to explore the city!

1. Get a DISCOVERY PARKS PASS - the trail is a National Forest so it requires this pass for visitors to park and enjoy the trail.
You can get passes at most outdoors retailers like Big 5 Sporting Goods, REI, etc.
2. Bring a towel if you expect to come near the fall - you will get wet even if you don't jump in!
3. Take plenty of water along with you - summer or winter you will get thirsty and dehydrated.
4. If you go during winter - make sure to layer up and have a waterproof or repellent clothing layer to ensure warmth and comfort if you get wet. Wear proper hiking shoes with good traction as it gets pretty icy - if you have hiking spikes to attach to your shoes even better.
5. This hike can get dangerous for small children during the winter, so make sure to pay attention to your children if you plan to take them on this hike. Keep watch of them as there are many spots where they can slip or fall through snow pockets and into the raging river below. In the summer, you need to be aware of small children while in and around the waterfall as it feeds into a raging river that children can get washed into.
Happy hiking and stay safe out there!
