Living in the Loire

2 жыл бұрын

Take a glimpse into our simple life on our French homestead in July. It was a hot month so most of us took it easy. There was no stopping Brook though as he dug up concrete and demolished walls. The rest of us opted for more of a simple life harvesting the fruit and vegetables as the potager on the homestead exploded into an abundance of vegetables - cucumbers, tomatoes, chillies, beetroot, melons, herbs and a huge amount of courgettes!

Welcome to Living in the Loire, we are a young family in rural France, renovating previously poorly converted barns. We aim to do most of the work ourselves, being as frugal and as eco as possible!
We are learning on the job and we hope to share the skills we pick up along the way. When possible we will take you on a tour of the region (the garden of France) sharing with you the numerous chateaux, towns and markets.
As well as the house we will be transforming the garden, bringing part of it back to its previous use as a potager. This is our dream and one of the main reasons of leaving the city to move to the countryside in France.
Join us on our journey!

@@LivingintheLoire Yes, all around the Parc de la Briere to the ocean, some Bercegeay's live in Guerande, La Baule, Saint Nazaire, Trignac St. Andre' des Eaux and other towns in the area. Bercegeay isn't a very common French name, mostly found in this area of France. Ascension Parish Louisiana is home to many Bercegeay's, All coming from one Frenchman, Rene' Bercegeay, he died in France but his children immigrated with their mother to Louisiana 200 years ago and intermarried with French Acadians in Louisiana.

Oh dear Brook, I think you might have succumbed to the "Mad dogs and Englishmen" out in the midday sun! Only joking (not) but the garden is seriously amazing, which couldn't have happened without all of the hard work that Rebecca and you have put into it. I'm having courgette envy, winter here and courgettes are way too expensive for everyday consumption. I'll be getting the seeds down in my little greenhouse very soon! Gosh the boys are growing like weeds aren't they? Must be all of that wonderful home-grown produce they can munch on! We're having a very cold and wet winter this year, and it doesn't agree with me at all! I'd love to hop on a plane and land in sundrenched France. Glorious!! Big hugs and much love xx
@LivingintheLoire
@LivingintheLoire 2 жыл бұрын
It really is too hot here at the moment to be working outside after about 10/11am - consequently the weeds are running wild! You'd be more than welcome to some courgettes though! I can't believe how fast the boys are growing. Hope it's not too cold in NZ.

You have a beautiful piece of property and you are making it your own. So much energy, you two make me wish I was young again! Some information for next summer from an old farmer's daughter in Indiana, USA (a state known for it's corn/maize), if you want to grow sweet corn (maize) to eat, you need to plant at least two rows with each plant set 25cm apart from each other. The rows can be 25 cm to 30 cm in distance from each other. You need this spacing in order to get good pollination and big ears full of nice plump kernels. I look forward to seeing your wonderful potager develop!
@LivingintheLoire
@LivingintheLoire Жыл бұрын
Thank you Mindy! We didn't really have the (prepped) space to have a big bed of maize this year so just planted two rows and thought we'd give hand pollinating a go and see what happened. To be honest it hasn't been much of a success but there we go! It's all a learning curve. Next year we are going to have a large area for sweetcorn so can block plant it and then have squash underneath. Thank you for the advice on the spacing, I will keep this in mind 😊

I realise anyone can buy property in France but can't necessarily stay there for more than 3 months. How have you guys found getting a long term visa or residences permit? and then presumably, naturalisation to gaining a French Passport. I live in New Zealand and that's my only passport, so I'm wondering, if I do buy property there, how easily could I get a long term visa after that. My partner and I are in the same boat as you both once were, but with no kids. We want to go back to basics and have time for our crafts too, a carpenter and a painter with a huge potager garden here in NZ but we are renting. cannot afford land anywhere here. Loving watching all your videos. Keep up the hard work. Cheers from down-under
@LivingintheLoire
@LivingintheLoire Жыл бұрын
Hi Rachael, fortunately we were able to get in under the Brexit withdrawal agreement so we're able to get a 5 year residency permit without too much difficulty. Now you would need to prove you meet minimum income requirements (I'm assuming you're not yet retired). It's a bit more of a faff but it is doable especially if one (or both) of you is able to work remotely while you're establishing your craft businesses.

We're receiving a lot of comments about this and talked briefly about it in some of our films. We'll probably do a video on it but we went for a high risk approach, believed in our skills and had a clear vision, but of course we have doubted ourselves a long the way.
