Larry, you are successful because you are a humble, competent, and empathetic person...big mouth helps (said respectfully🙂), but only helps, the core of who you are makes you my favorite training channel, and I’m thankful to learn from. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I train my outs with 2 balls the exact same. It’s super easy. The dog outs because it wants the other ball and learns what it means fast.

Been working negative reinforcement with a flat or choke. Do not have access to E-collar due to no one having cert at work. Was givin green dog and have been through the fire being a newish handler. So far the negative reinforcement has been the least chaotic and middle of the road when it comes to being too positive or too heavy handed. There’s ppl in the community who are both and it’s tough at times cause everyone is better than the next. I appreciate the knowledge of these videos regardless of how long ago they were recorded. Thanks for putting time towards these Larry.

This isn’t negative reinforcement? Making corrections isn’t considered negative. It’s correct. Balanced

Thank you so much for this video. My Dobie would do this, get a ball or toy and play keep away, treats did nothing but encourage her to continue this behaviour and towards the end she ignored the treats. Because of this i hated playing fetch or tug. Actually did the opposite of what you taught with the e-collar with great success, but I will switch and try this method. Thank you again!

Earlier today, I spent 10 minutes trying to get a piece of plastic out of my dog's mouth because she thought she absolutely needed to swallow it. I will definitely be incorporating this into my training routine soon! Laughed out loud at the end comments lolol

I appreciate your videos and bought your e collar book. Unfortunately I did not learn "teaching any dog to drop what is in it's mouth", even though I watched this video twice. It's so hard to find videos of trainers working with dogs who are not trained. It's nice to see your success and I agree with your philosophy, but this video didn't show the sequence to teaching out.

@@AndrewA6 Thanks, appreciate your help. Larry indicates using stim with the out command, but there's no discussion of teaching the out command to a dog who doesn't know it. That's what I was hoping to learn since the video is titled "teaching any dog to out...". Thanks again for your time.

Ahhhh, perfect...just what I need right now with my 9 mo. old lab mix! He is willing to obey n participate with me if there isn’t something else that he sees as better n more fun...like the very small dog next door (who has a nervous-Nelly” mama n hates to see this big bruiser coming their way. (Btw, my lab is sweet n curious n loves her pooch, so they’d be best buds if N.N. Mama would relax a little n let them play.) So this is the absolute perfect tool we need! Thanks a ton!

Thanks for all the great videos, I'm stuck, my dog 19 month old dobe is very good at his commands when we are training especially when a tug is involved very into, engaged and respond quickly (almost like he doing tricks) How do I go from this to him doing it without the tug and without the leash

I have a 3 year old red nose pit named Bambi. I got her from a neighbor who abused her when she was 1. Bambi is a really great dog but im lost on how to fix our relationship. She only listens when someone asks her to sit or give them her paw. When anyone asks her to come to them or to stop doing something shes not supposed to she just stares or lays down. She is afraid of movement like chairs or peoples hands. She will run away from any noise that is near her. Bambi is also very afraid of water so giving her a bath is almost difficult unless i sit down so she can climb in my lap while i bathe her. Im lost on how to help the situation..

Love your stuff Larry!! Every video is gold. Just thought it would be worth mentioning for anyone who does use the science side of training that the leash pressure and e collar stim technically falls into the "negative punishment" quadrant, not "negative reinforcement" :) In the science world the terms are used like this: Negative = removal of Punishment = any undesirable stimulus Positive = addition of Reinforcement = any desirable reward

How did you initially teach 'out'? Is that through positive reinforcement only (like toy trading)?
@Sadows12
@Sadows12 4 жыл бұрын
Probably by immobilizing the toy, saying out, then simply waiting for the dog to out on its own. A lot of people have been teaching out this way to avoid any sort of conflict. I teach my dogs out using this method and it's fantastic. All 3 of my dogs (two sport BCS and a Husky) out on cue perfectly every time.

So if I understand, removing the stimulation is a marker for the correct behaviour. In that case, how is it different from a clicker for example?
@HailLuzifer
@HailLuzifer 4 жыл бұрын
the stimulation is negative
@mareamiller6957
@mareamiller6957 4 жыл бұрын
So the clicker is ADDED (think positive, like a positive sign + like addition) to the behavior. The stimulation is SUBTRACTED (think negative, like subtraction, like - ) If you want to get very science-y, there is a quadrant. In the "positive" section there is the ADDITION of good things the dog wants more of (clicks, treats, praise) and the addition of 'bad' things the dog would prefer not to have (social pressure, leash pressure, high level e collar). The additions happen after behaviors as either good or 'bad' consequences for good or 'bad' choices. In the "negative" section is the SUBTRACTION of good things (no treats, no praise, no access to other rewards such as play or continuing to walk) and the subtraction of 'bad' or neuteral things the dog is not going to want more of (such as leash pressure, stressful environment, and LOW level ecollar stimulation) negative reinforcement happens before we get the behavior we want to encourage the dog to make the right choice.

I taught my coonhound to retrieve and release in my hand, exchanging the toy for food. Not sure if that would work with a German shepherd or malinois..

Keonda Cook First of all my Puppy is food reactive. Smoked ham, steak, liver, cheese, he goes nuts for all of these. I also carry around his normal kibble, and use the others for when I really want his attention. I carry a fanny pack treat bag wherever I go with him. So he knows that if the bag is on we’re going to have some fun. I use the word ready before I throw the ball. At first he would bring it back but he wouldn’t give it up and run around and play with it. When I showed him a piece of food that he liked he came towards me and basically I grabbed for the ball, put the treat to his nose and said drop it, he smelled the food dropped the ball and ate the food. I did this over and over for weeks and then sometimes I would give him a treat and sometimes a pat. Now he brings it back treat or not. I have a 10 second video on KZfaq of him doing it. At this point he already understood he was going to get a treat so I didn’t actually have to exchange it one for one. Look up, Treeing Walker Coonhound Jaxon.

No no no. Since my first very own gun dog in '83 we have never ever ever train or even allow 'drop it' at my house. It is always always 'give here'. Preferably at a heal position. I don't allow them to shake the water off first either. Nothing short of in my hand is acceptable. Even my Son knew that. Now many dogs and breeds post our hunting dogs, we still don't allow 'drop it'. Must be in my hand. I don't care what it is or if the dog is a retriever or not. Mostly not these days for us. 'give here'' in my hand always and forever. This is the way. The only way.

That’s a ridiculous and outdated way of thinking. And no reason to treat all dogs like a bird dog. Lots of limitations with that way of thinking. If I want the object brought to me then I can ask fir that, no hesitations.

Curious if any of the E-collar makers are listening to feedback and making versions that give lower level feedback but don’t shock? Maybe call them E-Trainers? That might satisfy the positive only guys, and also keep uneducated owners from shocking their dogs so much.
