In this episode, I give a quick tour of the truck and change the sparkplugs. More to come as I slowly restore it and make it more road worthy :D

I have a "newer" FFV assigned to my route (it was built in 2001) though I like the old LLVs too. They get better mileage and have parking brakes that actually work. The design of the cab is better also: you can fit more parcels and trays of mail underneath the mail rack. Plus, those trucks can turn on a dime so you don't have to be backing up on narrow streets all the time.

I'd love to learn more about the FFV someday, finding any reliable information on them is pretty hard it seems. The one consensus I seem to hear about them though is they weren't as well loved as the LLV was

My LLV has the best parking brake of any vehicle I've driven. I engage the brake, put the truck in drive, then go check the transmission fluid. I'm still here.

You know, the most curious thing about these old USPS trucks is that GRUMMAN used GMs I-4 engine. In GMs application in small cars, this engine got 20 something mpg. But when Grumman put it in the little USPS truck, all of a sudden, it only got 8mpg. I could understand it losing a couple mpg, but 20? No, somethings wrong. I would not put it past Standard Oil to have contacted Grumman once they heard that Grumman got the contract & SO & Grumman worked out a dirty backroom deal to tweek the I-4 to get 8mpg so SO would make BILLIONS selling the USPS tens of millions of gallons of fuel for the new fleet. Thats the way business is done. REMEMBER, its nothing personal, Its business. !

I get about 17mpg in mine, i think the lower figure may be just from how USPS uses them

Most LLV's are used on so-called "mounted" routes delivering to roadside/curbside mailboxes, which means lots of low speed stop-and-go driving, which explains the drop from 17 mpg avg. highway mileage, to 8mpg.

Is that an E OR AN A ENGINE YOU CAN LOOK ON THE VIN IN THE MIDDLE OF SHOULD HAVE SPECIFIED A OR E to indicate type of engine

The VIN has no A or E in it. It's the 2.2L motor in it

Was listed on a government auction site as a state owned example. Best I can tell they were using it to check water meters

It's less the cost and more the difficulty in obtaining one. USPS will not sell theirs so you have to watch government auctions for state or universities selling theirs

It wouldn't be a hard swap to be honest, anything that was in the s10 should more or less be a drop in fit

@@PostalDog94 . I have to find me one of those first. What kind of price range should I be looking to spend? Aren't they replacing all those with new mail trucks? Should be a flood of those showing up on auction when that happens.

Sadly USPS isn't selling theirs, they're only sending them to scrap yards. They're quite difficult to come by, but do occasionally come up for sale on government auction sites. I paid $3800 for mine

@@PostalDog94 . Must be a liability issue. I'll keep an eye out but I'm not sure I'd want to pay that much. I'll likely end up getting a RHD Subaru as they seem to be the cheapest vehicles going in RHD..

There's always the RHD postal legacy, you still see them around from time to time :)
