bon jour ! and thats all for my french, lol i loved every second of your reaction and explanation of this masterpiece, i copied some of our Nightwish discord that might be interesting for you it is about Floor singing techniques used in this album and especially in this song Music.... quote... Some of you may ve heard that it is called Melisma, a technique of singing the lines of a song using various notes that go up and down. The word 'melisma' is greek and it caught my attention and did a little research. This technique had been used in the recitation of the 2 Homeric epic poem sagas, Iliad and Odyssey with the accompany of a harp. It was a beautiful and mesmorizing way to sing these poems in order to catch the attention of the audience and embrace the human voice. One of the first ways of 'modern' human singing almost 3.000 years ago. quote ending..... i subbed you pls stay safe in these crazy times, greetings from a dutch cheesehead living in Germany, member of the (peacefull) nightwish army, orange legion..... i think the song how is the heart of this album (it was written also for Floor of being a mother and a singer and how she met her husband, and how she is managing that double role) thx for the subtitles.... by the way when you come to the song how is the heart..... there is also an acoustic version of how is the heart.... you will love it.... c est magnifique...

Where did you get that quote and info? It is excellent information! It would mean that Tuomas/Floor make a reference to an ancient way of signing/cantilation. Do I get you right? That would make this song even more impressive ! Please, give me this info! And one last point : if you knew how PAIN-FUL it is for me NOT to listen to the other songs of Nightwish and other videos of Floor. I will do that, patiently (I am a patient man) and thoroughly, in the coming weeks ! Be safe !

A reactor whose channel goes by the name "Patrol Gaming" also came up with a detailed analysis. However, he picked up on something that we have all missed. Some of us danced around the edges of this, but the penny didn't really drop for us. This song is sung from the perspective of music as a sentient being, giving herself to us. That is the real brilliance of this piece. Floor is singing as the entity "Music".

I think she embodies Pan in this song. At first, I though too it was music, but I don't think so anymore ! You already have an answer in my review of the second part of the record, but it will become more obvious later, I am convinced. Because Pan represents everything Tuomas loves in life !!!!
@billattercliffe8655

@@GuylainPrince One way to think of this is how the song starts with music existing in Nature before humans emerged. If we consider Nature = Pan = Music, then the label doesn't matter. If we think of Pan as a human creation, then Music came first. I'm approaching the song from the latter standpoint.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 4 жыл бұрын
@@billattercliffe8655 Excellent argument. But Pan, as a figure or personification of something, is to not be associated with 'his creation' by the human mind. But as you said, it is so close ! Peace and Good. May our Father Francis give you his blessing. I am a third order Franciscan and it is a True pleasure watch your reactions and profound reflexions on the text. Although, i think, the band isnt religious, they made an álbum that illustrates very well God's work in all its complexety, with the Goods and bads of Human choices and the magnificience of Nature. Thank you and may God show His face and give mankind some peace in this times. By the way i am also a part of the discord that Ronny spoke in a comment below.

I will answer to that as one Capuchin did - his name : André Ménard - while watching a great documentary on nature. The video ended with a beautiful and contemplative perspective on the world. And he said : “These guys are Franciscan and they don't know it yet. The only thing missing in their wolrdview, accorfing to St. Bonaventure, is the tiny connection with the Origin, the Creator.“ I think that the symbolic device, the Greek Deity called Pan, is for Tuomas a way to deal with the 'mystery', the 'dance' and the alliance hidden in nature. For us, Franciscan, we give a name to this presence. Maybe Tuomas still thinks that he has to be an atheist to be truly faithful to the results of science. In my mindset, both theological and spiritual, it is not the case. At all. But, hey !, what do I know? I am simply a Franciscan friar... :-)

700/5000 Excellent reaction and analysis. It's the fourth time I've looked at your posts, all related to Nightwish and I liked them all. I really liked your reaction when you heard Laudato Si at Shoemaker. It was also the determining factor for which I subscribed to this channel. I will definitely follow your posts and not only those related to Nightwish. In the end I want to say something that believes me, coming from me is a compliment. If all the representatives of the church, no matter which of the many existing ones were like you, my attitude would go from indifference and often rejection to respect. So far, the only one I have respected has been Pope Francis. Looks like you're second.

I am speechless. I don't know what to say. You couldn't have told me a better compliment. I really love and respect very highly Pope Francis. Do you know when was the last time I cheered like that in recent years ? I was visiting my old brothers in Montreal. And we all gathered at the TV room, because they told us on the radio that the new pope was elected. We were there, together. Watching. "We have a new pope', they said on TV, 'ahd his name will be Francesco". This was the most joyous sight you could have seen. A bunch of old friars - with a younger one, with them ! hum, hum! - screaming and dancing as If Canada just won the Mundial. Yup, I lived that kind of moment in front of you!

I can see from some of the comments that you have already listened to a lot of past music from the symphonic metal bands, but I would like to listen to your thoughts on music that you may have already heard. Rather than just reactions, why not start a series of "lyric analysis" videos, that don't require a surprised "reaction". It would be refreshing.

Such a beautiful, well-thought and articulate analysis - thank you for taking the time and sharing with us! You noted the complexity of the melody and wondered if the album contains more of that complexity...yes it does. Not all of the songs, but quite a few. This is something quite different for the band, and Tuomas said he challenged the singers with this album. Floor acknowledged that it was a challenge for her. If I remember correctly (from interviews) she took a month or more simply understanding the text before attempting to sing it. You also wondered about how it might be in a live performance...she and Troy performed one of the songs from the album (How’s the Heart - another beautiful song) live and that has some of the same complexity and she handles it perfectly. I look forward to more analysis from you.

To be quite frank and a bit blunt, is there anyone other than Floor to sing this live ? I genuinely can't think of any one else. Such 'unnatural' phrasing and melody. This is the kind of song that you can barely understand and like on the first hearing; there is so much to understand to appreciate to its fullness !!!!

@@GuylainPrince A quick outline is that this song is for Eugene Merle Shoemaker. He was an American geologist and one of the founders of planetary science. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 that hit Jupiter in 1994. He was heavily involved with the Apollo program and a possible candidate for an Apollo moon flight and was set to be the first geologist to walk on the moon but was disqualified due to being diagnosed with Addison's disease. He died always regretting missing the moon mission. On July 31, 1999 some of his ashes were carried to the moon by the Lunar Prospector space probe. He is the only person whose remains are on any celestial body outside Earth. His memorial capsule has a quote from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet engraved on it reading .. And, when he shall die Take him and cut him out in little stars And he will make the face of heaven so fine That all the world will be in love with night And pay no worship to the garish sun. The reason for all of this post is that it makes a beautiful lyric video better .. IMO .. as it explains the verses, the quote above. Quite a wonderful pieces of music .. and at the end we have Floor going FULL operatic for once.

It's not often someone reacts to this song and mentions the complex vocal lines to the degree you did, Guylain. Such appreciation for the melodic athletics that Floor performs and makes sound easy and so beautiful. Finesse indeed. The music is 'so very Tuomas' as you said, but it's this album in which his genius finally had a chance to fully stretch its legs in my opinion. Before he wrote what Tarja and Anette could sing. Now he writes what he wants, knowing that Floor can handle it. And the end result is nothing short of majestic.

I believe the first "melody" is from a Hurrian Hymn to Nikkal (approx. 1400 BCE) which is why it sounds very different and non-melodic to our ear. It was transcribed from clay tablets which include how to make the harp to play the music. It's believed to be the oldest complete set of music of humans. You can read more here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurrian_songs The song is the history of music in our universe from nothing building over time It starts with; Sound of Silence Sounds of the Universe Sounds of Nature Sounds of Drums Sounds of Horns Sounds of Flutes/Reeds Then one of the first harps described shows with a choir of angels (which is the first polyphonic instrument) Leading into one of the oldest known written song melodies. It continues building and traveling through time... My opinion anyway!

Thought you might be interested in an analysis of "The very first song." From Wikipedia; the oldest known piece of music. "The earliest fragment of musical notation is found on a 4,000-year-old Sumerian clay tablet, which includes instructions and tunings for a hymn honoring the ruler Lipit-Ishtar. But for the title of oldest extant song, most historians point to “Hurrian Hymn No. 6,” an ode to the goddess Nikkal that was composed in cuneiform by the ancient Hurrians sometime around the 14th century B.C. The clay tablets containing the tune were excavated in the 1950s from the ruins of the city of Ugarit in Syria. Along with a near-complete set of musical notations, they also include specific instructions for how to play the song on a type of nine-stringed lyre." Somewhere on the net is an actual video of this being played on the Lyre.

I noticed, this morning, two things I did not hear on my first listening. At the very beginning, there is a drumstick 'snap' with a lot of 'reverb'. This is time and space. And then, you hear two instruments. One is on the left and sounds like a French horn. Two notes. An oscillation. And in the middle-right, appears a very low flute. This is, right from the start, Pan. He comes here and there, always with a wind instrument. 2) In the middle of very 'natural' and 'organic' music and instruments, appears a 'synth' melody. It comes with the stars. I noticed, yes, that it was of a different kind. It is probably the one you refer to. I did not know the backstory, but now I know ! Thanks !

Why are this Human | Nature reactions not shown in your video list anymore? I wanted to enjoy your excitement about this album again, but I had a very hard time finding this work. Maybe you can look into it as I wish for more people to see this.

Just ask for "Guylain Prince Nightwish Music" or LM 06 (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g69op8milb3DZ4U.html). At the end of each video, there is the link to the next one!

Firefox needs to implement a way for subtitles to go into PiP.

You don't have access to CC on you FF? On MAC, I do. So sorry. Want to try it with another browser? Because de subtitles are right there, for everyone to enjoy.

@@GuylainPrince Oh they work, just not in the recent "picture in picture" feature Firefox has, which means I have to keep the tab active if I want to enjoy your wonderful commentary (or learn French...).

Bonjour ! Merci !
