What a fascinating guy. No youngster at all, yet so full of life, and awe, and even a child's wonder. Bless you, my brother! And to the young people reading this: Christopher Lee, descendant of Charlemagne, released a metal album at 91 years of age. He had this twinkle in his eye. I love old and adventurous music, and in metal, I find a most unusual peace, as if I've come home, to some mythical place, far away in time, yet I live and work absolutely in the moment. Though I turn 63 today, I also ride an Italian superbike. I spend most of the year removing the most dangerous trees around high voltage power lines, to prevent wildfires, and in fire season, (and there are really two fire seasons here in California), I go into the fires to fall burning trees, not to cheat death, but because of my love of life, and the natural world. These things, I think, are all related. I love life, and extreme music and extreme work for the same reasons, and, God willing, I hope to do this well into my seventies, and wild metal is coming with me. This song, the whole album, this monk so alive with a 'child-man's heart', Lee and his youthful love of metal, myself and my wildland love... Hear us and believe us: The noise needn't own you. If us old-timers can live joyous, fulfilling lives, so can you! That you're even alive on this amazing world... Is that not itself miraculous? So GO OUT from all the 'noise' and LIVE YOUR LIFE. 💝

I have to admit, that while I saw that your reaction had English translation, the previous auto-translations from French to English have been laughable. I decided to take a chance and I was mesmerised by your presentation. I have found a deeper understanding of both songs due to your lyrical and musical analysis. You deserve a great deal more views than you are currently receiving. Maybe others feel the same way about auto translation? Bon Chance mon ami, and I look forward to your next reaction to 'Shoemaker'. You may want to do some prior research on Eugene Shoemaker prior to your reaction? A Bientot. Kevin from England (PS - The line spoken by the little boy was "I Will Follow")

For the line, by the child, I wrote it on the screen in French, laughing at myself : the lyrics video spelled it out very clearly. I was just looking somewhere else ! Thanks for the nice comments. Yes, in this series, because I am all alone in my corner of the world to love this music, I take the time to translate it in English. Knowing that I may find 'kindred spirits' somewhere !

I truly enjoyed your deep analysis of the verses. Using a lyric video instead of official music video was a good choice too, emphasizing Nightwish's creation instead of Stobe Harju's, the Finnish film director who made the music video in collaboration with them (brilliant work on its own). For me, the message is obvious, and we all have our own involvement in this virtual world to the extent of our own ego. Nobody is without sin, right?.. :) We have created sharp tools, but double-edged. Please be aware that the next one, "Shoemaker", is a tribute to a real person, Eugene Shoemaker. Better to check his story first. Thank you for a Easter Sunday afternoon well spent! All the best from RO.

Thank you very much sir, for analyzing but also spreading the video. I have three daughters and it scares me how their friends grow up. I am praised with children who enjoy nature and walk with me and the dogs in the forest, play outside and have good times with their friends. But I see so many people that are drawn into their phone and are not aware of their surroundings. I feel so sad when I walk on the streets and people talk...with wireless headphones. Nobody seems to interact anymore. A friendly talk with a stranger can light my day. So many people outside, still there is nobody. Merci!

You are probably very right about the compression. I think a lot of thought was given to the production of this track. Did you know that the sound recording is designed to give you a "surprise"? At the very beginning of the track, if you listen in mono, rather than stereo the "noise" cancels out and you can clearly hear Floor say "Shut Up". The beauty of this little "easter egg" is that you are more likely to hear mono if.....you're listening from your mobile..

in the oficial vid. you can see that every member has his own role in the video.... Tuomas plays the envirement freak hugging the trees, Troy playing the King, twittering to the world while he is sitting on the toilet (refers to Donald T.) Emppu the guitar player is the monk who is different than the others (a red screen) Kai the drummer plays a monk that makes selfies rather than to help Emppu, Floor plays the mother with a child and taking selfies, Marko the bassplayer is the industrial that sells pills (fat away) and the blond girl (not a nightwish member) plays a fake instagram modell who uses botox to stay pretty...

Another very insightful analysis. The video does provide us with an additional element that is not strongly present in the lyrics - hypocrisy. The characters all have their 'pretty' online personas and their far more prosaic, even ugly, offline reality. The eco activist bathing in oil when offline, and so forth. The young woman is Jessica Edstrom who is actually an Instagram model and she parodies her own lifestyle in the video. I thought that took a considerable amount of courage to appear in a video as a parody of yourself. Normally I don't subscribe to reactor channels, but I have to yours. I will be looking through more of your videos to see which of them may be subtitled, though my understanding of French is improving as I listen to you. A few decades back I lived in Quebec for a while, but ear has since gone stale. BTW, XimerTracks is a scammer bot. Another one goes by "Tom". They are characterized by non-specific praise for your video and a call to sub them. They're best blocked.

Forgot to mention, the repeated use of hexagons in the video is a reference to a honeycomb and the hive mind. Interestingly hexagons are also the theoretical basis for the pattern of cell tower distribution - the heart of our digital world. The 'hive mind' is referenced in other tracks on the album. I plan to borrow "Brave New World" (ironically, to be obtained online and to be read on my Kindle) from our local library as I need to read it again. First time through it I was young and it went over my head. I've never watched the "Black Mirror" series and I'm not sure if it's available over here. I'll have to check.

@@GuylainPrince "Brave New World" is a dystopian novel written by Aldous Huxley in 1932. It describes a future world where everyone is controlled and a slave. I don't know very much about the "Black Mirror" TV series beyond the Wiki description. It's about the impact of technology on society. There's also references to the movie "Matrix". In "Shoemaker" Tuomas gets into Shakespeare. The man loves his literary references.

A very late comment, but I just watched the video and wanted to give my idea of the meaning of "feast of fears" and "beyond the human horizon, something terrifying sleeps". Thinking of the themes of this album, I think it represents the human fear of confronting what lies beyond our own mortality. We turn towards "noise" of our electronic devices not only to seek pleasure and entertainment, but to distract us from the fears and difficulties that plague us in the real world. The world is scary in big and small things and bad news are everywhere. There is a whole vast universe out there that does not even know we humans exist. It can be comforting to just stop thinking about the bad and scary things and drown in the meaningless noise, "beautifully numb" as the song says, but doing this means you also miss all the good and beautiful things out there.

What a great song. I loved your analysis and reaction again. You obviously have a deep understanding of the musical recording aspects of modern music. There is so much happening musically in a heavy rock song from Nightwish. So many instrumental frequencies coming at you from every direction. The only way to hear everything is to use extreme compression in the mastering process. The trick is to allow some of the intricacies of the vocals and softer sounds such as the keyboard strings to still be heard. Many times in Nightwish song Tuomas simply chooses to hammer out the accents on the keys instead of just hold the keys and strings in a sustaining fashion. You must have some direct musical recording experience to be so knowledgeable? Even though "Noise" refers to images, in my opinion it also applies to sounds in the way that the video portrays how big corporations advertise to all of us to prey on our vanity and need for other peoples approval. We are all driven by our own egotism. Advertising assaults us everywhere you go. Billboards, company logos, radios, television, and of course all over the internet. If you watch the actual music video you will see how my opinion ties in. I really love how deeply you go into analyzing the lyrics. Tuomas is such a genius at composing his poetic and intellectually stimulating compositions. Most lyricists don't approach song writing this deeply and it shows in their results. Can't wait to hear you thoughts regarding the next one, Shoemaker. This song is an Ode to Eugene Shoemaker. Until then, être bien et rester en sécurité. La paix soit sur vous.

Well, you answer many of my questions. I will answer some of yours. I recorded 10 records, but I don't do that anymore. I worked with a professional one time, and it was so formative. For the others, I was on my own. I do have access to a recording studio. I had my radio show in Canada for three years, while doing pretty much everything on the technical side as well. For records, my specialty was recording choirs (especially Gospel). I was a 'semi-professional' studio technician, mainly for radio. Your message answers my question and I appreciated every line of it. The complexity of NW songs is extreme, except that until now, I am not sure, I have heard real strings. Seems to me keyboards. Did I get that from your message as well? Last thing, I worked on a record for 5 days, in the mastering process, just to make everything heard. For me, I was giving double care to the paning (and to the range of frequencies that every intrument 'gets'. As for the voices, I always kept the center free (except for drums and bass). The mastering tended to 'flatten' the panorama and add confusion in the frequencies, blending instruments that were not supposed to. I can understand the extreme difficulty of an exceptional album like this one. I will look at the video of Noise tonight, after supper. Really looking forward to look at it again. Extremely impressed by my first watch, on the day it was launched ! Thanks for the little line in French ! Much appreciated !

@@GuylainPrince Thank you for the generous reply. I knew from your understanding that you must have had some professional recording experience. Even though I am mainly a rock music fan, I am still very interested in other musical genres as well. Choirs and Gospel music can be very grand and emotionally charged, especially when done with care and intelligence. Yes, you are correct about this new CD, Tuomas decided not to use real strings or orchestra. All of the sounds are keyboard generated, except for the choir which was added. I may take a look at your channel to see if you have any of your musical work available for listening? Thanks and most welcomed. You probably understand, here, that I do not refer to 'Deity', 'priest-like figures', temple, as religious proselytism. I simply use the categories that Tuomas puts in his songs. Being himself an atheist, according to what subscribers wrote, he nevertheless uses an old Greek deity (Pan), music with clear references to the sacred, and many other 'creative devices'. We talk about the work of a very creative mind, here. And dialogue is always the best solution. Peace !

Very good analysis. Like the comparison with Pan inviting you and the slavery of the Noise. Tuomas himself sees this song as a positive one at the end, he said in one interview that the nature is there outside just get into it so ”get out and get in”... to the nature is the way to see this song. Also I see this song as a criticism to overly consume the digital world and not noticing the world and beauty around you. The reference of the black mirror is a tv series Black Mirror, a British dystopian science fiction anthology series but its concept is pretty much the same as your reflections. Thank you for this, I’ll continue to the next one from here 😊

I have watched the song Noise several times and there are some very striking visuals. in the beginning you see the group of people people in hoods looking down at the devices and yet one of the world's most beautiful paintings is in front of them. all they can do is look at their phones. it is also interesting that when you talked about the compression of the sounds 'Noise' in the sound and music but this is also mirrored by the compression of the videos images almost to the point of being overloading. this video reminds me of "Sound of Silence' by Simon and Garfunkel where the song says "When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light, That split the night". I know that they could not have predicted the world we live but yet their song seems a bit prophetic.

First class comment. I do not have a large screen to watch them. I look on a very tiny section of my screen. I just get a general feeling of the image. In the analysis, I usually watch one or twice the video, full screen. It is the only time I have to 'deconstruct' the image. For 'Noise', I could not do it! I chose NOT to watch the original video because it was too much for me. The great lyrics and the great music were enough. Really looking forward to have a closer look at the original video. It looked extremely creative. I will keep your thoughts in my mind when I will watch it again.

As you point out, this song is Noise (very loud, and direct). this fits perfect to what the song is about right. Thats one thing Tuomas is a master at, making these great lyrics, but also making the vocal express it in a way making the one listening connecting to what the song is about.. emotions put the right place in the vocal performance, as well as the music composed, of cause Floor also should have credit here, for delivering it like she does., without her, no voice.. the whole band should have credit right..lol Great reaction, really deep in the text there, loving it..!!

"Brave New World" is the title of a novel by Aldoux Huxley, where he depicts a dystopic society where people live in an artificial world in which they think they are happy because they are told to think so, but in fact they have forgotten to live the real life. And "Black Mirror" is also a TV series about the dangers of a society dominated by asrtificial devices.

If I had know that... But my interpretation was not misleading. I analyzed what we call the 'function', or the development of meaning of the expression. I realized that 'Brave New World' was irony, in that particular context. Of course, knowing what you just said could have helped a lot.

@@GuylainPrince Your interpretation is great, anyway, it doesn't change anything, but I'm sure Tuomas is familiar with the novel by Huxley (which deals with psychological manipulation and classical conditioning) and he has sometimes stated he's a fan of Black Mirror series too, so I'm sure he had that in mind when he was writing the song.

I think the phrase "Color the yarn and the crow will gather" is exactly the way of saying the trend of following the crowd of mankind. I watched a very interesting TV show called "Brain Game", in which people did an experiment, they created a line with a barrier in front and a volunteer stood in it, then very Many people lined up following him and didn't quite understand what they were lining up for. It happens every day on social media, we follow trends (sometimes meaningless), eventually we have a bunch of people taking photos of them falling over their heads and excitedly posting on Facebook.

You sir are the fra William of Baskerville when it comes to Nightwish analyzers. ;-))) Your deduction here is flawless, I guess. Tuomas writes very difficult lyrics by using very uncommon English words and lots of metaphors from many different sources. I have to always use dictionary and Wikipedia open when I try to analyze them. So it's not a miracle that there are not new album in every year, but with this album we have some meaty stuff coming. Do you mind if I ask why you are in this Nightwish world? As we know they are not particularly religious, some of them are even openly referred themselves as atheists. Non-religious humanists they are for sure. It's quite a funny that non-religious artists portray aspects of the real world better than strictly religious figures. Even when the topics are very important and even fundamental to all religions.
@GuylainPrince
@GuylainPrince 4 жыл бұрын
You are totally right. Tuomas has an English syntax all by himself. The way he combines the words is not common English at all. It is a blend of poetry and construction of sentence from another 'mindset' than English or American. There is also "the phrasing', the prosody. He writes music on a keyboard. The way he brings words and music together is very unusual, complex and melodic at the same time. I wonder if anyone but Floor can sing that in an elegant fashion. Probably not ! As for the atheist part of your comment : as a Christian, I will celebrate every single beautiful thing that the humans will do. Everything in synchronicity with the Kingdom. And I will marvels at the beautiful creation humanity is. And thank the Only One. If Tuomas and/or other members of Nighwish are atheists, I can only say : I'm sorry to hear that. But hey! I will receive with the same enthusiasm the great music they put out ! Peace from Jérusalem!

@@GuylainPrince Tuomas' mother was an elementary school music and English teacher, so it's quite likely that his grasp of those subjects comes from his upbringing. In his songs are quite often references to science fiction and fantasy books not even translated to Finnish, which he quite likely read when he was a teenager or even younger. He also spent a year as an exchange student in Wichita Kansas when he was 15 year old. It was a life shaping experience because during that time his host family coaxed him to a Metallica and Guns N' Roses concert, which changed his attitude to metal music he used to detest earlier.

YES! I only wish more people would feel and revel in this coherence of the music and the poetry that NIGHWISH presents... I wish it would prompt them to look deeper beyond the simple meanings, or simple joys of "rocking out". As such, maybe, some whining about this being "too soft" or not throwing in enough all-out vocal screams, or solos, would cease. Your last remark, Brother, was to the point, no - to the core: NIGHTWISH is not "for beginners" anymore. That is possibly why the superficial are not "getting" the praise, while others claim this to be the best since Beethoven. All the clamor part of the Endless Noise, of course. :))) P. I wonder if the chorus lyrics are any reference to Aldous Huxley's Brave new world in which people are kept in a slave state by some pills that they have to take everyday. Noise in the communication world is the term for all kind of sounds and things that makes ‘noise’ but is blocking the real communication between sender and receiver. It is all around you and comes to with communication but it blocks the capability of us to really hear what the other person wants to say. For real hearing the other you have to reduce the noise. So stop send false images what not your real one are. Stop looking at your screen. start to go outside and look how beautiful the real world is. So, play your own music. Do not replicate others and feat the beast like a modern priest of Ego-Land (yourself). Enjoy life. The third song is Harvest, what means: contribute something uniques to the world what is really worthfull instead of Noise. .
