Enjoyed your video! Thanks for going over the electrical connectors. A lot of people skip steps that they think are common knowledge. The only thing I would add is how to verify the brakes are actually working after making the connections. Show using a multimeter with the trailer hooked up to the truck, etc.

When you are making your electrical connections from the brake assembly to the jumper wire that goes across the axle you should have got rid of those old butt connectors. I have learned from experiences in the past, you want as little connections as possible and when making your connections. The more butt connectors and the more connections you have the more opportunities for one of those connections to fail and you will be chasing electrical shorts and pulling your hair out trying to find it, ask me how I know?

Great video. I live in N. Cal (but not for long). I bought a used triple axle trailer (7k torsten lipperts) for my move to AR and took it to a local shop to me checked out (because I don't know squat). Their shop rate? $125 per hr. Of course, I needed new everything x 6, so Ka Ching, $1,300 in parts and $500 in labor = $1,800 . Straight out of the shop, both of my brakes on the front axle are completely locking up. Any ideas? The shop didn't mention seating the brakes. Maybe I just need to do that.....

I have tandem 7k lippert axles on my Diamond C trailer. The brakes have seemed weak from day 1. I had a shop look at them and the replaced 1 axle because the adjuster seized. Have you had any issues or was this simply routine mainteance?
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve noticed that on both trailers I’ve had to manually adjust the brakes several times before they were where I wanted them to be. The 7k brakes are just almost too small for what I put them through. It’s just a constant battle to keep them tight.

Its just a question which always comes in my mind. What “if” a crash involve failed brakes. The insurance will demand work order from a licensed trailer mechanic to make sure they were done right. How would that be in the situation where you replaced it yourself?

The owners manual for your axle will give you the recommended maintenance intervals. You can find them online if you don’t have one. Most of them recommend every 10-15k miles I grease mine once per month. If I notice anything loose or hear something I don’t like I’ll pull the hub and check the bearings. You can pull the hub and check your brake pad thickness at any point but typically you’ll notice your pads are getting thin if you’re having to adjust your brake controller higher than normal in order to feel them working like normal. 👍

Great video. You are familiar with these brake mechanisms. Could the magnet arm be suitably used to fix a pull cable for a mechanical operated parking brake?
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not quite sure on that one. I do know that the arms aren’t very stable and the brakes most definitely rely on the hub to keep them perfectly straight. I think you’d risk bending the arm attaching anything to it. You wouldn’t be able to pull it straight because of the hub so you’d have to drill into the back of the housing. Wheel chock is much easier 👍
@backbeatpat
@backbeatpat 2 жыл бұрын
@@LoadMizer Thanks. My spec requires a secondary brake (emergency and parking) that has to be held in place mechanically. In other words a electrical break away kit would not be sufficient. That is why I was asking the question.

I use Lucas. Switch between Red N Tacky and the green Heavy Duty grease depending on what’s in stock. Haven’t had any issues with either one so I just get what’s available when I stock up. As far as a grease gun goes I got a couple from lowes. Nothing fancy. I don’t even think they were $20.

Trailer place told me I need to replace the hub the same time I replace brakes. Is this true?
@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 2 жыл бұрын
Not at all. Sounds like the trailer place is doing 2 things here. 1. Making a brake replacement cost 3x what it should. 2. Being lazy. They don’t want to remove all of the components and then put them all back in. They’re being extremely lazy here and in turn ripping you off. They want you to pay for a full hub assembly so they can just remove the old and throw new ones on to save themselves time. My advice for you is to never call that place again.

@LoadMizer
@LoadMizer 2 жыл бұрын
They’re most likely wired backwards at the brake. I had that happen to 2 of mine. Since the wiring isn’t marked on the brake (they’re just 2 black cables). If you have an ohmmeter it would help but if not just find the ones that aren’t working and switch the wires positive and negative.

I guess it’s just my preference really. There are a few things as far as vehicles go that I always stick with name brand or OEM parts. Brakes, filters, tires, wiper blades and lights. I’ve tried to upgrade a lot of things over the years in a lot of vehicles and it almost never fails that when you try to go cheap on them, they either don’t fit properly or they don’t perform properly...or both. I just got burned too many times lol
