As per DPWH specifications for highways, bridges, and airports, aggregate for subbase shall consist of hard, durable particles or fragments of crushed stone, crushed slag or crushed/natural gravel, and filler of natural or crushed sand or other finely divided mineral matter. The composite materials shall be free from vegetable matter and lumps and balls of clay and shall be of such nature that it can be compacted readily to form a firm, stable subbase. The Department of Public Works does not specify whether calcified materials can be utilized as a subbase course. Perhaps these materials are appropriate solely to the surface course.

So if included in the scope of work covered in the contract, the removal of existing concrete the contractor must follow the indicated methodology and replaced with new materials as specified in the contract. Also, for information as per DWPH specification on Subgrade on Existing Pavement and if specified on the contract, the slab shall be broken into pieces with greatest dimension of not more than 500mm and the existing pavement material compacted, as directed by the Engineer. admin_jpp

Good Day Mr. Calvin White! Base course is a layer of the pavement structure immediately beneath the surface course. It typically consists of high quality aggregate such as crushed gravel, crushed stone, or sand that provides a uniform foundation support and an adequate working platform for construction equipment. Base may consist of unbound materials, such as gravel or crushed stone, or stabilized materials, such as asphalt-, cement- or lime-treated materials. The subbase course is typically a granular borrow that is placed between the base and subgrade. It can be constructed as either a treated or untreated layer. The subbase course must be better quality than the soil subgrade, the subbase is often omitted if soil subgrades are of high quality. Subgrade, Subbase and Base course are layers prepared prior to the placement of the design surface courses. There are 3 types of pavement w/c are flexible (asphalt), rigid (concrete), and unpaved. We provide subbase, base course on flexible pavement prior to asphalt laying but for rigid pavement like Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) subbase layer only is needed prior to concreting of the pavement.
