I know right. It's almost like Lore Reloaded took the "12 shots" as a absolute and ignored the "at most" part. Plus, the Borg were created with the ability to adapt quickly which means one's estimates should be taken as just that, estimates.

The scene where Lily confronts Picard addresses the issue of Picard's irrational behavior and everyone going along with it. "The crew is accustom to following my orders" "They're probably accustom to your orders making sense!"
@KuariThunderclaw
@KuariThunderclaw 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that kind of is one thing I noticed too. And honestly it's one thing I don't think Lore gives enough credit to. This kind of behavior isn't idiocy. It's human nature. When you trust someone, even if it doesn't make sense, it can become instinct to kind of set second thoughts aside. Especially if you've had such second thoughts in the past about other things and been proven wrong. Eventually you tell that voice to be quiet. It is one of the biggest problems with a military style command structure. Like they often TELL you to question things when something seems clearly out of place, but that can be so subjective that finding those moments can seem hard, or terrifying. It's why the excuse "I was only following orders" is such a common one. The people aren't involved aren't stupid, persay... it's that such mental conditioning has its drawbacks.

Hollywood has a terrible record of getting ppl shot. Their gun safety training is the worse. At no time should any actor have their finger on the trigger.Prop or not. The biggest reason why the crew goes along with Picard's battle plan is because he's the captain - there are multiple examples in star trek where the crew has to follow a captain's orders regardless of personal feeling. One of the best examples of this is when Sisko ordered the bombing the maquis planets to flush out Eddington; you could tell how uncomfortable the crew was at the order, but they still did it anyways. Later on in the movie, Picard orders Daniels to go back to his security checkpoint and even fight the borg hand to hand if necessary. It's clearly suicide and you can tell that Daniels is deeply uncomfortable with the order, but he starts to return to his post without question - because Picard is the captain. Moments later, Dr Crusher even tells Lily that they follow Picard's orders because he's the captain - even if those orders are crazy. It's also quite telling that the only star fleet officer willing to stand up to Picard's insane orders is Worf, but that's an episode for another day.

One of the major problems with star fleet is that they are not a military organisation, as you said a military mind would think about this in a different way. Sealing off sections and flooding them with the plasma that erodes organic matter could be a method. Picard said in nemesis that he is an explorer not a warrior where most of the federations enemies are warlike Klingons, Romulans. If starfleet are to fight the Borg they have to be a ruthless as the Borg are. That’s one of the reasons species 8472 where so scary they didn’t back off when they had the advantage they chased the Borg ‘the Hunter has become the prey’. This military mentality is shown in enterprise when archer states at the beginning that he didn’t want to command a warship yet near the end after encountering all the hostile races in the galaxy he said the Columbia should have more weapons and a detachment of MAKOs. The federation has forgotten how to wage war Picard said it best when he talks about how everyone retreats from the Borg that’s not fighting that’s surviving. The Borg challenge starfleets mentality and code when Q said you can’t reason with them, you can’t out run them

One could argue 'there wasn't a borg hub in engineering at the beginning and the borg still operated' is irrelevant given it was the loss of the queen, not whatever tech they installed that triggered what happened at the end. Presumably she was one of the borg that was present in the group that originally transported to the ship Also, whatever security protocols you might have in place like you described for this sort of incident wouldn't be all that effective given that as soon as the borg assimilate any security personnel they would become aware of it and be able to alter their tactics

The moment the enterprise followed the Borg it would be fantastic for the collective, they get to eliminate earth before it becomes a threat and subsequently other powers, but they get every technological advancement the entire quadrant would inevitably create immediately along with the history, they assimilate earth and just wait until the day the Borg would have first come to that area of space and then reconnect.

@kyle1078
@kyle1078 4 жыл бұрын
Best theory I have heard is that the Borg individual units had no defense, but widespread use of kinetics against them would lead to the collective retrofitting their units to have sufficient armor to effectively be immune. Due to this concern Starfleet had plans for use of kinetic weapons (DS9 actually has an episode where one of the prototypes is used) but they didn't want them used widespread and perhaps were keeping them as a last ditch effort for a potential ground war on earth or to retake another key target.

@@kyle1078 The problem with fighting the Borg with any one weapon is that said weapon quickly loses effectiveness after a few engagements, or worse, becomes a new weapon in the Borg's arsenal. Makes me want to delve into the theory of Trek in my channel, though household 6 seems to think it’ll be a bust if I do that. But you pull it off very well. And as a military veteran for over a decade - your tactics and procedures discussed in this video, if nothing else, are based on known tactics of the borg. And they’re sound, even for a “peace loving society that abhors conflict”. Starfleet failed miserably in relegating their resistance to merely designing new ships, like you said...

Okay, I'm the closest thing to a "military mind" that's going to be lurking in a KZfaq comments section: The first thing I have to ask is: "Are you *sure* mainline Starfleet has encountered Borg boarding parties before?" The experience with the NX-01 Enterprise was lost to history. Voyager is stuck in the Delta Quadrant. Worf 359 was mostly an exercise in the Borg pwning the Federation with better technology. But, the first thing I'd do is recognize that the crew itself is the 'vital system'. The Borg need to catch crew members to increase the numbers, so if the borg are around the rule would be 'no one does anything alone'. After they were detected, the plan would be to have everyone gather in a handful of vital locations and to seal most of the doors. When everyone is accounted for and you're ready to purge the ship, you have one or two large security teams purge patrol through the ship. Like most scifi baddies the only reason the borg are even a threat is 'your weapons don't work, lol'. So, you'd have to rely on physical systems. For any other invader it would be 'have everyone meet in engineering/the bridge', seal those sections, then open the airlocks and turn off the gravity on the rest of the ship. Then get O'Brian on the transporters and tell him to have fun. For the Borg, it would be 'put a massive amount of steel wall between them and wherever they want to be'. Sadly, the things the borg are often most vulnerable to tends to be electronic warfare things which exploit their cybernetics. Pretending the Borg's neural network worked something like a radio - you could easily set up a radio that broadcasts a bunch of white noise on all frequencies which prevents anyone else from communicating - basically how a loud speaker blaring out a screeching noise prevents anyone else from effectively talking. If you had that, the Borg couldn't talk to themselves. No communication means no adaptation which means now you only have to shoot them.

Yes of course...........This is just a texbook example of writers knowing nothing about tactics. Or not consistently keeping it in mind. Star Wars is sci fantasy: it's Star Detroyers are filled to the brim with soldiers ready to board or defend including using droids (robots) Star Trek never seems to employ sensible tectics...........including during war time. Nobody is wearing any kind of armour or persoinal shields, most of the ship isn't armed, and no automatic security in place. Isn't that a clear sign that the writers dimply have no interest in making it realistic?

@@Nerdiness1985 Armor and personal shields are likely worthless or very limited in usage. If you look at "The Battle of AR-558" an episode of DS9 that depicts a ground battle against the dominion, none of the soldiers posted there use armor or personal shields either. Others elsewhere have gone into it in more detail than I will here, but it's likely that personal shields able to defend against the weapons tech at the time simply do not exist in the Federation arsenal, and armor is ineffective against energy weapons as Klingon troops wearing armor go down in one phaser/disruptor shot just like anyone else. The races that do wear armor as part of their military uniforms like Cardassians or Klingons likely do so due to cultural reasons, or perhaps due to the frequency of internal ritual combat without energy weapons.
@ailius1520
@ailius1520 4 жыл бұрын
@@Nerdiness1985 Unfortunately a realistic story with realistic tactics isn't entertaining. With modern and post-modern weapons, if you can see somebody, you can shoot them. Modern firefights are all about avoiding line-of-sight until you get in the unique situation where you can see the enemy but they can't see you. Thus, a realistic firefight would be your heroes shooting at the horizon with bullets coming back at them, but you don't get a clear view of the enemy because he's 200 meters away and behind cover. That would be absolutely terrible cinematography. I'm sure a master could pull it off and make it all the more engaging for it...but if you aren't doing a dedicated war movie, dropping the ranges to close quarters and pretending everyone forgot how to aim seems to be a good enough answer. Or take the Kobeyashi Maru scenario...the correct professional answer is "You run away, then call up to command to let them know the situation and to send reinforcements", if it wasn't a simulation you'd come back the next day with nine ships (yes, you'd need nine) and take the hostages back. But as a simulation, (before the JJverse had Spock create it for dumb reasons), I'd say it was meant to test the cadets' abilities to execute their break contact procedures. It's part of the routine package of battle drills we make basic training units perform. The professional answer is smart and realistic - but is it heroic and entertaining? No. Would you want to watch a movie where the heroes only attacked when the odds were on their side? Where 'combat' was a bunch of people sitting in safety while drones/turrets/transporters/dampening fields/phasers from orbit did most of the heavy lifting?

Why everyone went along with Picard's plan. First: This is the Captain of the ship. The crew here probably have little to no real idea what they're up against and are going to follow what the Captain orders. The higher ranking officers backed up the Captain here. There wasn't any reason to question them. If I'm some random ship tech who hasn't seen combat or qualified with a phaser in years because of my job requirements, and I'm literally about to try and fight of magic robots, I'm going to hope my captain knows what he's talking about... By the way... Second: This is Captain Picard. A renown Starfleet captain of the Enterprise of which stories are likely greatly talked about and talked up. This man was also Borg say one point, he is the subject matter expert. No one has anything close to his experience. Third: Data and Worf, two highly decorated and renown starfleet officers, one being a robot who single has an extremely high decorated history of success and is backing up Picard, and Worf being a freaking Klingon. To sum up. Picard, Data and Worf, gathered a bunch of crew members who may not be security, and are calmly explaining and laying out a plan of attack against forces I have only heard about in terrifying rumors with minimal Intel on how effective they are, then Worf says ”WE MIGHT” have 12 shots AT MOST, before their personal shields can block a phaser rifle? A rifle with a setting that can level a city block? Their personal shields can block that!? I'm going to shut up and hope I'm doing whatever Picard says correctly.

Anyone who has watched a horror movie would know that those security checkpoints would be overrun without anyone noticing until it was too late. The lights would flicker, everything would go dark for a second, and those security officers would have disappeared. The guy acting as the runner between the checkpoints would turn around, see his comrades are missing and immediately start to run to tell everyone something is wrong. The tension would be increased as the lights on the deck grow dim and the walls start sounding like someone is pounding on it. He would reach the turbolift and close the door. As he breathes a sigh of relief he hears something behind him and turns to see a borg drone. The scene then cuts to an exterior shot of of the turbolift doors as we hear the sounds of a struggle and blood curdling scream from behind the doors. The scene then cuts to Worf and Picard exiting a turbo lift and Worf reporting the loss of contact on deck 16.

Something that occurred to me yesterday: Your "the Borg were trying to save/create the Federation" theory is incomplete. Consider the opening scene of the Enterprise episode set in the Mirror Universe. What if that is how first contact would have gone had nothing happened to Cochrane and his settlement? These are people not long out of an apocalyptic war, led by a guy who's just in it for the fame and fortune. Without a preview of a brighter future and other such inspiration, it's not inconceivable that they wouldn't have been as welcoming to the Vulcans, perhaps legitimately believing them to be conquerors. The Terran Empire or their later conquerors probably wouldn't have helped the Borg the way Janeway did. Perhaps the Mirror Universe is the true "prime" timeline, and the canon we know is a divergent timeline created by the Borg. One can even go another layer deeper, weaving in the theory that First Contact was the culmination of Q's plans when introducing the Enterprise to the Borg in the first place - perhaps he wanted both to humble Picard by showing him that he's not so perfect after all AND to nudge this promising younger race onto a better path. Simple plans in linear time are for lesser species, after all.

Honestly the fact that Starfleet does not use projectile weaponry, or at the very least have them readily available to be replicated in the event of a Borg incursion is beyond me. They know the Borg can't adapt to projectile weaponry. If it were me, I'd implement 2-3 person security teams, one carrying a dedicated marksman rifle for precision shots to kill individual drones, and one or two officers with fully automatic, high capacity weapons like M249 SAWs or the like for suppression. Given the technology of the time they could probably make a killer light machine gun that weighs next to nothing. Not sure how well containment would work on the Borg given what we know of Borg tactics. I think hit and fade style attacks to wear the Borg down while not exposing your own forces for very long would be more effective. You kill drones, and don't give them enough time to replace their losses. Mobility would be a key factor I think considering the Borg's methodical pace.

Lore, have you read the novelization of First Contact? One major difference to the final movie is that Zefram Cochrane is outright stated to have Bipolar Disorder. It is said that before World War 3, Bipolar was regulated by an implant which needed to be replaced every 10 years. Given that they're in a pretty post-apocalyptic world, Cochrane never managed to get his implant replaced and has been self-medicating with alcohol for years by the time he meets the Enterprise crew. Once the crisis is over, Beverly gives him an injection that permanently cures him.

well for boarding defense one can have self contained phaser strips set to target known enemies. this would ensure that enemies would have to use jeffries tubes, or in the case of the borg have enough to ensure they can adapt. for borg specific boarders one can have passive receivers listening for borg comm traffic (they are continuously broadcasting their thoughts). now listening in might have issues, but broadcasting strongly on those frequencies will drown out (known as jamming) the borg's comms. it can also alert the bridge when it detects these signals on the ship, and lock down critical areas. one can also have an emergency protocol which uses the transporters to transport non-critical components into space around the ship, away from the borg (minimizing things that can be assimilated). one last thing to slow them down would be to have solid barriers to be beamed in places to block corridors which would take quite a bit to get through (just look at them having to beat down the medical bay doors. i could get into some other methods to directly kill them, but it seems that the federation should have thought of them and lore says that they have failed so i will assume that everything i can think of are countered.

There is an interesting comment from the author of the Lost Fleet series. He addresses the lack of emergency generators in his science fiction designs by pointing out that there are examples of just that in actual military service right now. The lack of CQC training and weapons is nothing I would be surprised by in a modern military. Such oversight is of course not desired but certainly not unheard of.

0:59 Also the corridors are an open space. They should be easily sealed off in sections like in a submarine in case of enemy boarding, particularly the Borg. As cool as it is which has been carried on since TOS, it's a design flaw for such battle situations including battle damages where the hull is ruptured.

Hey! This is my 3rd video of yours I've watched. NEW FAN HERE! haha, wow these are good but sometimes we disagree on certain aspects. Like earlier when you said that engineer wouldn't be so worked up over environmental controls. You even mentioned it but I like to think he was worried he was going to get his ass kicked for not even being competent enough to fix such a small and easy problem, it even could have been the first time he has been given command in Geordis absence. Also when the crew suddenly just follow Picards orders at first when obviously they are shotty at best, I like to think that Picard has so many times proven himself such a competent Leader that i can see the crew simply following orders at least at first. When has he ever steered them horribly wrong in the past? All these videos though have SO MANY good points I've never even thought of before! Thanks so much!

I just realized a fairly significant plot hole and it’s driving me crazy. Starfleet should use TR-116 rifles against the Borg since they use a physical projectile. Especially if they put a micro-transporter on the end like they did in the DS9 episode they could remotely kill Borg with zero risk to the operator as long as they don’t jam the transporter signal or something else. Even without the micro-transporter it would be far, far more effective than phasers.

Now someone mentions it... we never do see what sorta physical impact a star trek series shield can take before overloading or shorting out.. or maybe strait out "smashing" through them in a way. Similar to personal shields in Star Wars can be defeated if you attack with a slow enough weapon and right type
@connorhorman
@connorhorman 4 жыл бұрын
The micro-transporter likely hasn't been used in this way yet. Besides that, it's likely the borg could adapt their bioelectric field to at least dampen the impact from a firearm, and the body armor would probably take care of the rest.

Next up as an idea you could do after you're done with the rest of these follow-up videos on First Contact. What if Sisko was in first contact? = along with all his Defiant crew from DS9 after being rescued from the 001 battle onboard Enterprise E...a 40 minute plus or 1 hour special breakdown based on all you know about him + them in character throughout the whole film's events between both TNG and DS9 crew members' reactions together from start to finish in knowing and guess in predicting on what they would do instead. And how it would've effected the movie quite differently overall between Sisko's actions + relationships with the Borg after 359 and with Picard in their own ideas/tactics on how to treat the present situations between those two captains against the Borg and what could've happened in all those events instead leading up to its finalization = arguing + disagreeing + fighting and working together before the end in resolving it all. Personally: I think Sisko would be in Worf's place instead as more of a main character rather than Worf alongside them = taking his issues out fighting against the Borg pro-aggressively trying to get to the reactor core with revenge in mind, then trying to disable the dish and then both captains would have a go at it in physical harm during that argument on the bridge instead = and the rest of the crew would either step in to stop them tearing each other apart over their trust issues or leave them at it in seeing who comes out on top from the grand fight in the battle of two legends with bloody noses at the end of it after years of pent up rage from the mental harm that the Borg inflicted down on both of them. Love to think of how Sisko would be the one instead to take more revenge out of the queen than Picard did in snapping her remaining spine at the end instead after everything that's been done to him from losing his wife and struggling with the lost afterwards leading up till now. But it would lead to a more mutual respect in closer for the two captains in understanding what they went through together then and now in different ways, and make peace with it all and each other afterwards = with more given time after they go their separate ways after getting back home to the future that will help make them better men afterwards for their upcoming experiences during and after the dominion war.

TNG had always had a problem writing for Troi. She was put on as a title character as eye candy. Besides her Magic Telepathic powers, she had no need to be on the bridge of the enterprise. The character of Troi probably could have been better fleshed out having her as a secondary character, like with Ginan, O'Brian, or Barkly. With officers going the Psyc Ward for consoling, not having one right on the bridge. Because they needed someone to fill the seat next to Picard, she was just kinda placed there. This scene in First Contact was basically just to make sure the title character of TNG had something to do. Also when First Contact Came out it was before the Me to movement. Women were still suffering from the expectation to allow unwanted touching. So being an actor, she played the part written, and also during that time such actions were considered normal flirting.
