+Patrick Owers I like Legolas reaction too. He seems to value the lives of the people who are with them even more, crying when Boromir dies even though he didn't really know or like Boromir much. Legolas has spent his whole life in a society where death is unnatural, it makes perfect sense that he would act this way.

The main reason I prefer the extended edition of Fellowship over the theatrical cut. A lot of the context and development between Aragorn and Boromir’s relationship was cut in the theatrical release. The extended edition really shows you how far they came leading up to Boromir’s last moments.

@Sober Gnostic Except that in the books Aragorn always wanted to be king and was already the active Chieftain of the Dunedain. Aragorn in the films follows the typical romance book trope of a "bad boy" or undisciplined youth (at 87, lol) who eventually is tamed or learns responsibility. I am not saying it is better or worse than the books, but we should recognize the trope for what it is! So Boromir's acceptance of him (which wasn't a thing in the book, or at least not clearly so like the movie) had no effect on Aragorn "finding himself", as he already knew and embraced his destiny.

@@82SSchultz Aragorn lived to 210. He’s a young whippersnapper in Dunedain terms. If memory serves, the ancient men of Numenor, in addition to being ubermensch who were stronger than the elves, were even more long-lived than their Dunedain descendants.

@82SSchultz more than accepting his role as king, it symbolizes his acceptance of mankind, and moreover mankind's fate as a whole. Raised by elves, he saw it as a weak and greedy race just like the elves do, an old has been empire. Aragorns entire rise to being king and accepting humanity follows directly in line with the fate and hope for humanity

@@noorykorky5056 I think that moment was more to show us how powerful that ring is. How it can twist the most noble of motives into it's own evil agenda. In a sense, we can't blame Boromir anymore than we can blame a person for getting sick from a virus. That ring isn't just something anyone can overcome with willpower. It's a disease that usurps it. Stunning acting, stunning direction, stunning writing (both from Tolkien and in the additional dialogue). It's funny, the same reason Boromir is your favourite character (and he's a strong choice - he's extremely compelling and has _way_ more nuance and complexity to him than he had any business having, particularly in the extended version) is the reason Aragorn is mine. It's a repeated theme across the trilogy to see him take time out to give hope to those in fear ("this is a good sword, Halas, son of Hama..."), whether they're "important" or not, whether it ultimately makes a difference or not, but this one hits home so hard. He just... couldn't allow a man who had lived his life of such valour and hardship die feeling broken, defeated and ashamed. He wasn't even ready take up Anduril at this point in the movies, not quite, but he swore he would be when the time came because it was the kind thing to do. To lop off _quite_ as many heads as he does in those movies and still have the abiding memory of him being these little moments of kindness and compassion; that's something. ...and, yeah, Sam's maybe got him beat in most of the qualities I clearly most admire but, like, it's Sam. He's the beating heart of the novels - he doesn't count.

My favourite part of the whole exchange. Earlier Aragorn showed his disbelief in Gondor and the humans by saying he would not take the ring within a hundred leagues if their kingdom. This is the first time Aragorn acknowledges Gondorians as his own people and the shared bond between him and Boromir. You can see the desperation in Boromirs eyes changing to love, hope and pride. Absolutely beautiful. Edit: This is the first time I noticed that Aragorn nods twice after that statement and smiles when Boromir acknowledges it and reaches for his sword.

In his heart of hearts, Boromir is a big brother. First thing he says, "They took the little ones!". exactly, and his affection extends to all the hobbits, including Frodo. He stops Frodo from running to Gandalf in Moria and endangering himself, then carries Frodo to safety. A major reason why he’s so guilt ridden after snapping out of his obsession in trying to take the Ring; he just broke the trust of someone he genuinely cared for.

If you watched the extended edition then you know that Boromir was the true emotional support of The Fellowship. - He trains Merry and Pippin in swordplay and joins in on the wrestling match to lighten the mood. - When the Fellowship is stuck in the mountain pass he thinks about the hobbits and helps Gandalf notice that they'll die if they keep pushing them. - When Gimli is mourning Balin's death Boromir is the only one to walk over and comfort him and puts his hand on Gimli's shoulder. - When Gandalf dies Boromir understands what they're going through and tries to give them time to grieve. - When Frodo silently laments about Gandalf in Lothlorien, Boromir shows concern and gives him advice. - When they sit together in Lothlorien, Boromir tells Aragorn about the good in humanity and that he would be welcomed to Minas Tirith as a hero (trying to bolster Aragorn's confidence). - When he snaps out of the ring's corruption he immediately recognizes his mistake and sacrifices himself for Merry and Pippin. Boromir was a great man with a big heart. It just kills me that 1/2 of these scenes weren't in the theatrical release.

@@Saicofake I'm normally the first person to see the other person's point of view no matter how different it is to mine but, if you watch these films (especially the extended cuts, which are the main ones available these days), I can only assume they weren't paying attention. _No-one_ is immune to the Ring's corrupting influence (except maybe Sam) - Gandalf isn't, Galadriel isn't, Aragorn _very_ subtly admits that he isn't. Even going off _just_ the Fellowship, if you don't yet know Gandalf's basically an angelic being, these are people portrayed as extremely powerful and extremely pure in their love for the world and everything Sauron opposes. Even before you get to your excellent point that he'd been dealing with hardship for years that a lot of people couldn't even imagine, you could see a good, kind and extremely valorous man in the vast majority of what he does. He slipped up - once and on something that any could just as easily have slipped up on - and it cost him his life. I don't expect people to judge fictional characters the way they judge real people but to judge even a fictional character for that... I just can't see the justification. Even in his other somewhat antagonistic character arc - initially not accepting the idea that Aragorn is King... he's not wrong. If Aragorn himself isn't yet ready for the responsibility of kingship, he shouldn't be King. The moment Aragorn says he _is_ ready, Boromir's all in.

The dichotomy between Legolas and Gimli's reactions to Boromir's death is great. Legolas has seen very few Elves die during his lifetime, given the longevity of Elves and the fact that Legolas hasn't lived through war, thus his reaction is pure and innocent. Gimli, on the other hand, is sad and solemn yet he looks as though this is something that he's used to, given the hardships the Dwarves have faced. I love when subtext is done well in a film.

In his eyes Gandalf is essentially an immortal angel in the body of an old man. Something older than any elf that ever existed. Not only is he confronted with the unfamiliar concept of death, he's confronted with the death of someone more ancient than his entire race.

He ran into the middle of a division of Orcs to save Pippin and Merry. He ran straight into danger to help others. Boromir is a true hero, he made a mistake but it doesn't make him less heroic. blink and you'll miss it - Aragorn actually took Boromir's braces after he died to remember his brave deed of trading his life for the lives of the hobbits. You can see him dawning them for a brief second when Boromir is in a boat, floating towards Rauros. He'll be wearing them for the rest of the film, even though he swapped his entire gear for his new kingly attire for the final battle at Black Gates, Boromir's braces were still in place. You could say, that Boromir, in some sense, was a part of the Fellowship until the very end, protecting his friends, which is what he chose in the end over his own life and desires.

It is about creating strong bonds with other people creating a community, and fighting for a common cause that goes beyond personal self interest, which is very rare nowdays, and any sort of idealism is almost dead.True idealism anyway, only idealism that is not stamped out is the modern day virtue signaling that works hand in hand with corporate interest and promoting of a consumer society. It's not just Boromir who accepted Aragorn as the rightful king, but Aragorn himself. Boromir was never truly jealous that Aragorn was the heir, but rather that he had such noble birthright and rejected it while staying close with the elves and being a bummy ranger up north instead of being anything resembling the leader of Men that Boromir himself strived to be every day in order to live up to what the Men of Middle Earth needed so badly.

I always found it strange that the absurd success of The Lord of the Rings (ultimately entirely deserved but _no-one_ dreamed of it before they were made) didn't start a trend of more earnestness in blockbusters. You almost never saw moments like that in film with nine-figure budgets before this trilogy, this trilogy is like one third sweeping vistas of New Zealand, one third epic battles and one third tender moments of friendship and compassion, and then you went straight back to barely ever seeing it again (at least without being immediately followed up by a piece of goofy humour).

Boromir and Aragorns character arcs are intertwined, and they come to a head in this scene. Aragorn has long struggled to accept his place and position as heir of isildur. He has rejected his heritiage and instead has embraced the life of a ranger, and takes more pride in his elvish upbringing. This disgusts Boromir near the beginning of the movie. He refers to Aragorn as a "mere ranger" and then is shocked to hear Legolas reveal him as Isildur's heir. Boromir is bothered that such a title would be shunned, and that the heir would choose the life of an exile instead. But he chooses to put on the face of one who believes that Gondor does not need a king. He does this because he is desperate to hope that Gondor will not fall, despite their lack of leadership. He reveals later in Lothlórien that he does not see hope, even though Galadriel tells him it is there. It is then he encourages Aragorn to go to Minas Tirith, trying to urge Aragorn to have faith in his own people, to become who was he always meant to be. But Aragorn will have none of it, and says he "would not lead us within 100 leagues of your city." He distrusts men, because he resents his ancestor for the failure to destroy the ring. But then this scene happens. Even after having been seduced by the ring, Boromir recovered his honour and gave his life to defend the little ones. It is then Aragorn discovers the truth of Boromirs' words. "Have you so little faith in your own people? Yes there is weakness, there is frailty, but there is courage also, and honour to be found in men." Boromir's sacrafice opened Aragorn's eyes to the true nature of man, and this is when he decides to embrace who he is, and what he must do. "I do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to you, I will not let the white city fall, nor *our people* fail." And with his dying words, Boromir proclaims Aragorn as his king, and sets Aragorn on a path that will change the world forever. Stunningly beautiful character writing, amazing scene.

For instance he doesn't get Anduril after Rivendell in the movies. I see accepting Anduril as his sword as of him accepting his fate. One of the things I've always loved about Lord of the Rings is the positive attitude towards platonic physical affection shown by men. Men in LOTR are in touch with their feelings, they aren't afraid to cry or hug each other or cry on each other's shoulder. And the forehead kiss is fairly common too. Sam holds Frodo's hand after he first woke up in Rivendell, and there was nothing gay about it, they were just best friends and he was worried about Frodo, and probably needed that physical reminder his friend was still there and alive himself. I genuinely think that if more guys behaved liked this in real life, the world would be a better place.

I both agree and disagree. I think my generation was the first to start being able to say "i love you bro". Which is healthy between 2 friends. Especially growing up amongst a lot of divorce when friends became like family almost. But at the same time, now having a daughter and a nephew without a father, it still feels genetically encoded in me to be strong and not show too much emotion (which I am known to do). It's a fine line trying to figure out what it takes to be a good man, and i also believe its open to interpretation. A emotionally open man and a traditonal man can both be strong and inspiring. Of all of Sean Bean's on screen deaths, this one is my very favourite. "I would have followed you my brother, my captain, my king." Boromir is my favourite character in the trilogy. He is a flawed individual sure. But he is honourable, humble, selfless and always looking to help others. He clearly wants so desperately to restore the glory of Gondor and make his father proud. But he has enough humility to recognise when someone else makes more noble choices than he does as well. He sees that Aragorn not only resisted temptation, unlike himself, but was also more than willing to die to protect a few hobbits. Which reassures him of the valour and worth of Aragorn, telling him that this ranger is in fact a great king after all At first he feels incredible shame at his dishonourable action. But Aragorn immediately reassures him that he has nothing to be ashamed of. He was clearly repentant and recognised that he made a mistake. Though it’s clear he was under the thrall of the ring. Even Frodo comments that Boromir was not himself in that moment. And immediately afterwards he ran right into battle just to try to save Merry and Pippin, despite having every reason to ignore the situation. But he chose to protect the weak, to uphold his vow and his honour. Which is why I will always argue that he never lost it in the first place. Even after trying to take the ring from Frodo That is not weakness, that is taking responsibility like a man and then some God this scene always reduces me to tears lol

I feel like it’s important to not leave out the “my brother” part of that line. It shows that Boromir’s respect for Aragorn isn’t just out of obligation and tradition but because of their bond. It also gains a lot of weight when you meet Faramir later in the story and see that Boromir not only has a brother, but one that he loves dearly, despite of and in spite of how terrible their father treats Faramir. He loves his brother deeply and wouldn’t call someone else his brother unless he really meant it.

It doesn’t get talked about a lot, but Orlando Bloom has a really good command of his face. After Gandalf “dies” he shows the confusion and realization of what grief is like for people with shorter life spans than his people, and how it’s different for him even if he is also able to feel that loss, hence his respect for the song of Galadriel’s people sang for Gandalf. He looks at Boromir first with sadness, realizing he is dying and then with furrowed brows as if it hurts to watch him die (which I imagine it does). So in one film (which doesn’t reveal the timeline but is meant to reflect years of travel), we saw Legolas’s growth as a more empathetic and emotionally open person.

Boromir, at his core, was a very selfless and caring person, a true warrior worthy of nobility. His concerns are always with his people and the safety of his kingdom. Even his desire for the Ring was to keep his people safe. When Gandalf falls, he implores Aragorn to let the Hobbits take a moment to mourn and accept the loss of a dear friend, only conceding when Aragorn points out they don’t have the time. When Haldir forbids the Fellowship entry into Lothlorien due to Frodo carrying the Ring, the rest of the party is shown becoming estranged from Frodo due to the stigma, but Boromir offers him comfort and kind words to help ease his mind in the situation. He finally gives into the temptation of the Ring, but immediately becomes apologetic and is full of regret once he snaps out of it. Then he sacrifices himself to save Merry and Pippin. Great shit.

How it corrupts his noble desires to reach its own end and that is even able to corrupt someone who is at heart a noble, just and honest man. That it can manipulate even Boromir, it is not something to be taken lightly. Little bit sad that the theatrical cut edited out some of Boromir’s interactions. This scene is beautiful. Boromir proves he is truly an honorable man and was corrupted by the Ring's pure evil power. The strength of the Fellowship and of his strong willpower is what caused him to pull through. He was simply driven mad by the Ring, even though it wasn't his fault. It has a will of its own and it will corrupt the average man without remorse. I believe Boromir was able to fight off this urge because of his true good self. His spirit would also be able to Rest In Peace knowing that Gondor overcame the power of the ring.

The Ring has its own power and it's also up to the willpower of the individual to give into it or reject it. Faramir and Aragorn, Gandalf and Galadriel rejected it. Also it has no effect on Tom Bombadilo but he's not really a "person" as such but the spirit of the forest. That's one reason why the concept of the One Ring is so compelling. It is an outside force of evil, able to corrupt you. But you also have the choice to accept it's power wholly or not accept it.

First thing he says “They took the little ones” - he’s not worried about the 5 arrows in him, he is giving Aragorn some useful information for when he is gone 😢 As a side note - In the books Aragorn respected Boromir from the get go, knew he was a great warrior and really wanted him to join the fellowship - probably one of the few men who could go toe to toe with Aragorn - I also like to think (though this is not canon) that Aragorn saw Boromir’s grandfather Ecthelion in him who unlike Denathor was a pretty good steward (who Aragorn fought for years earlier and they really respected each other)

“ The ring is beyond our reach now” was such a powerful statement coming from Aragon, basically letting Boromir know that him trying to take the ring was no fault of his own and the rings influence could have affected any man. The use of the word our in my opinion means that he finally excepted Boromir as a comrade and accepted his own humanity which she spent the whole movie denying. This was a major turning point for Aragon and also allowed Boromir to redeem himself from protagonists to flawed hero. Best scene in the trilogy for me and sets the tone for the rest of the trilogy

I love how Aragorn does not judge Boromir as he professes his sins, such as trying to take the Ring. Aragorn just nods and redirects Boromir’s attention to the good that he accomplished. He doesn’t let him linger on the negative and brings him back to hope and honor. After all that Boromir had done Aragorn had the grace to give him peace in his last moments. I can’t get over how perfect this trilogy is.

As of the second ep rings of powers only feel like they're trying to milk cash from the saga and not working out of passion. I mean shit like a black elf and mistakes like the meteor going over the elves on the coast, then over the humans/black elf in the east and AFTERWARDS landing near the hobbits who are WEST of the previously shown spot is so dumb. All of these locations are precisely shown to us, so the writers completely missing that is astounding.

A dark skinned elf and nomadic proto-hobbits are two of the dumbest criticisms of Rings of Power I've ever read... Congratulations. I can't imagine why a Puerto Rican guy playing an elf bothers you but I can take the obvious guess. It's well established that these are not hobbits... they are harfoots, which hobbits are descended from. It's almost as if they are writing a story about a group of people that wander and haven't yet settled in their Third Age home... It's ok to subjectively not like a TV show, but again those are objectively the dumbest reasons I've heard.

In the books, when he spoke of it to Frodo, he slowly drifted into speaking words of desire of mustering all armies of men under his own banner. Peter Kreeft, the philosopher said that Peter Jackson, in his movies, was not able to portray the characters as heroes, as they are in the books. But Peter Jackson made up for it in the character of Boromir.

In the book, Faramir announces the arrival of Aragorn. "Men of Gondor, hear now the Steward of this Realm! Behold! One has come to claim the kingship again at last. Here is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, chieftain of the Dúnedain of Arnor, Captain of the Host of the West, bearer of the Star of the North, wielder of the Sword Reforged, victorious in battle, whose hands bring healing, the Elfstone, Elessar of the line of Valandil, Isildur's son, Elendil's son of Numenor.
