I can't believe I finally understood this scene after all these years. We see images of the fellowship in the mirror, all giving Frodo suspicious looks. The Galadriel says that he will try to take it, and that one by one it will tear the fellowship apart. Frodo understands what he must do, but is afraid. This scene sets up Frodo's decision to leave the Fellowship, and go solo. I always felt bad about the Fellowship breaking up, but now I realize that if those 8 had remained together, the Ring would have torn them apart. But as three different groups, they managed to accomplish much more, without the temptation of the ring looming over them. Frodo was lucky that the Fellowship had to break up, and he was lucky that only Sam came along.

There is no luck involved , it's all literal divine intervention. Frodo is the most unlikely criature on middle earth to be chosen as the ringbearer, and yet he is the only one able to complete the impossible quest of destroying the ring because God wills it, and directly intervenes multiple times.

@@heinz8233 I believe there is always luck involved. To see it as Eru's intervention is up to the reader except for the ones that Tolkein actually confirmed it to be. The fact that Eru HAS to intervene means that not everything he sought out went according to plan. So there is always something more than divine intervention involved in decisions being made in the Legendarium.

Galadriel perfectly embodies the spirit of Tolkien’s elves. Beautiful and powerful yet with a hint of avarice. Even Galadriel who has witnessed most of Sauron’s evil still on some level yearns for the ring that has caused her people so much harm.

What makes them most interesting is that although the Elves are a graceful and fair people and obviously something more or less greater than other races, they’re not immune to temptation as Humans are. She learned everything the Valar (basically archangels/gods) were willing to teach the Elves when she was living in Valinor during the Years of the Trees. And after that, during the First Age, she lived with and was tutored by Melian the Maia, and ever since the end of the Second Age, she also has had one of the three Elven Rings boosting her power. She'd become quite powerful and fight back the forces of Morder at first, but eventually succumb and die while bringing the ring closer to Sauron. No matter how powerful one would become with the ring, it's ultimate goal will always be use them as a means to get back to it's master.
@noobster4779
@noobster4779 3 жыл бұрын
@@NtoTheM "fight back the forces of Morder" - to be more accurate, she could then literally walk into mordor alone and slaughter the entire place. Considering what she does to Dol Guldur in the books with only here magic and here not combat oriented ring of power I would ha ve no doubt she would be like a walking nuke. But sooner or later she would eather lose the ring or get corrupted by it. although that might honestly take centuries to corrupt/kill her for the ring.
@NtoTheM
@NtoTheM 3 жыл бұрын
@@noobster4779 Actually it'd take no time at all. As soon as she'd walk anywhere close to Mordor, she'd be done for. Gandalf was afraid of the monster he'd become if he were to touch the ring. The ring turns you evil and into "a Sauron" yourself basically by making you a tyrant. But no matter how powerful whoever puts on the ring becomes, they'd fall as soon as they get anywhere close to Mount Doom. It's simply how the ring works. Every excuse to get closer to it's true master is going to be abused. Also yea, she'd become powerful, but she's not Sauron. She wouldn't be anywhere close to using the full power of the one ring, because it only obeys Sauron. Everyone else is just a puppet and the wise ones, like Galadriel and Gandalf, know it and avoid even touching the ring out of fear of falling to it and becoming an unstoppable tool of Sauron. Don't get me wrong, Galadriel ist powerful as hell. But the reason Frodo was such a perfect ringbearer is because as a hobbit he doesn't carry much weight in the world. If he carries the ring he won't assemble armies and he won't channel cosmic powers to defeat his enemies. He's not a threat to Sauron by himself and doesn't become one to anyone else either should he succumb to the ring's corruption sooner than at Mt. Doom. However if Galadriel or Gandalf use the ring "for good" as it would start out, then nobody else would be able to stop them, IF they'd even try and not follow them blindly right into Mordor themselves. And then that's where they fall and Sauron has them exactly where he wants them. Gandalf and Galadriel are strong, but Sauron in his nest is on a whole other level.
@eufonioun
@eufonioun 3 жыл бұрын
The irony of this film is that, people with inherited power and status are more likely to succumb to the temptations of The Ring and thus Frodo, a small and insignificant hobbit, can not be corrupted as much as the others. They also seemed to have waited for Christopher Tolkien to die to make it because they know he would have likely tried to stop them. Notice how she appears to glow. Notice how she moves, how she speaks. Ethereal, almost like what you'd expect from angels. Now compare that to the arrogant brute that is "Galadriel" from Rings of Power. "Lady" doesn't just mean "woman"

@michaelphillips2884

Ah that's exactly it. Four thousand plus years earlier, Galadriel is more hunger for power than wisdom. It's precisely the terrible consequences of her own actions (which are just BEGINNING with the end of RoP Season I) that eventually give us this wise, sorrowful, immensely powerful Galadriel (who, note LIKE SAURON can read people's minds and communicate without speaking....). Everyone is so shocked at how much lesser she was in the characterization in Rings of Power. But it's the journey she is going through there that gives her the wisdom to say later "Even the smallest person can change the future."
@ChallengeIdeas
@ChallengeIdeas Жыл бұрын
@@michaelphillips2884 That's not even remotely it. The Galadriel we see in the film is one who is older than the sun and moon. She's seen her uncle Feanor commit terrible atrocities and die stupidly because of unchecked ambition and a short temper (sure, it's epic to fight all the balrogs at once but SERIOUSLY...). She was forced to cross the Grinding Ice on foot because of Feanor being a walking bag of weenies. She lived for millennia with Melian the Maia, learning wisdom, magic, and baking (baking is important!). This Galadriel lost her brother Finrod (a great king and well-loved) not as some random battlefield casualty (with what amounts to "lol" Sharpied on the remains), but because he upheld his noble oath of eternal friendship to Beren's ancestor, and died saving Beren most heroically--difficult to accept, but worthy. This Galadriel was wary enough to know that that "Annatar" fellow who's selling rings was bad news just by looking at him. This Galadriel was always in love with Celeborn, and nobody else would do. This Galadriel never set foot on Numenor, but understood it as yet another example of hubris leading to one's own destruction. RoP's "Galadriel" cannot and will not become LotR's Galadriel, because the circumstances that shape each one are so wildly different.

After Silmarillian I can finally appreciate the amount of information that goes into this scene.. I appreciate that Galadriel and Celeborn are shown as majestic but not fully righteous figures. After thousands years of exhausting resistance against dark lords and bloodshed among kinship and allies, they have grown weary and cautious about the torrents of power struggles. I finally appreciate “I passed the test. I will diminish, and sail to the West, and remain Galadriel”, for ambition and revenge brought her back to Middle Earth, but finally she recognizes that greatness comes not from domination, but from love, trust, and humility. And for Frodo, Galadriel’s trust and guidance urges him to mentally take up the burden of the Ring bearer, to press forward with strength, wit, and will till the very end. Beautiful scene.

Frodo was lucky that the Fellowship had to break up, and he was lucky that only Sam came along” ~*comment by user: Legato DeadWinters

You’ll love the full book scene with Frodo+Sam &Galadriel that even the great Peter Jackson & team didn’t seem to include.. which all this little stuff lead to that scene in the movies which gave it more meaning; & the”one who has seen the eye” thing was a mistake by the team. It gave the wrong message and was not needed as it lead some reactors to be like “so creepy lol” which diminishes how much farther that well done scene could have gone especially in the extended to do it properly as in the books that latex it out perfectly.: •[Frodo] stepped back shaking all over & looked at the Lady. “I know what it was that you last saw”, she said; 'for that is also in my mind. Do not be afraid! But do not think that only by singing amid the trees, nor even by the slender arrows of elven-bows, is this land of Lothlórien maintained and defended against its Enemy. I say to you, Frodo, that even as I speak to you, I perceive the Dark Lord and know his mind, or all of his mind that concerns the Elves. And he gropes ever to see me and my thought. But still the door is closed!' She lifted up her white arms, and spread out her hands towards the East in a gesture of rejection and denial. Eärendil, the Evening Star, most beloved of the Elves, shone clear above. So bright was it that the figure of the Elven-lady cast a dim shadow on the ground. Its rays glanced upon a ring about her finger; it glittered like polished gold overlaid with silver light, and a white stone in it twinkled as if the Evenstar had come down to rest upon her hand. Frodo gazed at the ring with awe; for suddenly it seemed to him that he understood. 'Yes,' she said, divining his thought, 'it is not permitted to speak of it, and Elrond could not do so. But it cannot be hidden from the Ring-bearer, and one who has seen the Eye. Verily it is in the land of Lórien upon the finger of Galadriel that one of the Three remains. This is Nenya, the Ring of Adamant, and I am its keeper. 'He suspects, but he does not know - not yet. Do you not see now wherefore your coming is to us as the footstep of Doom? For if you fail, then we are laid bare to the Enemy. Yet if you succeed, then our power is diminished, and Lothlórien will fade, and the tides of Time will sweep it away. We must depart into the West, or dwindle to a rustic folk of dell and cave, slowly to forget and to be forgotten.' Frodo bent his head. 'And what do you wish?' he said at last. 'That what should be shall be,' she answered. 'The love of the Elves for their land and their works is deeper than the deeps of the Sea, and their regret is undying and cannot ever wholly be assuaged. Yet they will cast all away rather than submit to Sauron: for they know him now. For the fate of Lothlórien you are not answerable but only for the doing of your own task. Yet I could wish, were it of any avail, that the One Ring had never been wrought, or had remained for ever lost.' 'You are wise and fearless and fair, Lady Galadriel,' said Frodo. 'I will give you the One Ring, if you ask for it. It is too great a matter for me.' Galadriel laughed with a sudden clear laugh. 'Wise the Lady Galadriel may be,' she said, 'yet here she has met her match in courtesy. Gently are you revenged for my testing of your heart at our first meeting. You begin to see with a keen eye. I do not deny that my heart has greatly desired to ask what you offer. For many long years I had pondered what I might do, should the Great Ring come into my hands, and behold! it was brought within my grasp. The evil that was devised long ago works on in many ways, whether Sauron himself stands or falls. Would not that have been a noble deed to set to the credit of his Ring, if I had taken it by force or fear from my guest? 'And now at last it comes. You will give me the Ring freely! In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!' She lifted up her hand and from the ring that she wore there issued a great light that illuminated her alone and left all else dark. She stood before Frodo seeming now tall beyond measurement, and beautiful beyond enduring, terrible and worshipful. Then she let her hand fall, and the light faded, and suddenly she laughed again, and lo! she was shrunken: a slender elf-woman, clad in simple white, whose gentle voice was soft and sad. 'I pass the test,' she said. 'I will diminish, and go into the West and remain Galadriel.' They stood for a long while in silence. At length the Lady spoke again. 'Let us return!' she said. 'In the morning you must depart for now we have chosen, and the tides of fate are flowing.' 'I would ask one thing before we go,' said Frodo, 'a thing which I often meant to ask Gandalf in Rivendell. I am permitted to wear the One Ring: why cannot I see all the others and know the thoughts of those that wear them?' 'You have not tried,' she said. 'Only thrice have you set the Ring upon your finger since you knew what you possessed. Do not try! It would destroy you. Did not Gandalf tell you that the rings give power according to the measure of each possessor? Before you could use that power you would need to become far stronger, and to train your will to the domination of others. Yet even so, as Ring-bearer and as one that has borne it on finger and seen that which is hidden, your sight has grown keener. You have perceived my thought more clearly than many that are accounted wise. You saw the Eye of him that holds the Seven and the Nine. And did you not see and recognize the ring upon my finger? Did you see my ring?' she asked turning again to Sam. 'No, Lady,' he answered. 'To tell you the truth, I wondered what you were talking about. I saw a star through your finger. But if you'll pardon my speaking out, I think my master was right. I wish you'd take his Ring. You'd put things to rights. You'd stop them digging up the gaffer and turning him adrift. You'd make some folk pay for their dirty work.' 'I would,' she said. 'That is how it would begin. But it would not stop with that, alas! We will not speak more of it. Let us go!' When] at last all that [Galadriel] had desired in her youth came to her hand, the Ring of Power and the peaceful rule of Middle-earth which she had dreamed... her wisdom was full grown and she rejected it.... Meaning definitely by now it’s become trivial to her. Even back in the day he couldn’t find her or pierce her mind and whenever he went looking for her presence he boils t find her ALL AT THE SAME TIME AS HER BEING ABLE TO READ HIS OWN MIND WITHOUT HIM KNOWING! Often times even from a great distance. That’s power. Just one calm look from her is all it takes to send even the Nazgûl run away from her. They even avoid her realm entirely both because of its own power as well as they know exactly who she is and her exact lineage through themselves being very old. 4000+years old. Especially the WitchKing(head Nazgûl). Remember Númenorean men are not like other average men. They were known to be rather superhuman & very tall. Between 6-8 feet.

Christopher didn't even have good criticism, he was annoyed with the modern fast-paced action. But he was completely wrong about the trilogy and he was pretty arrogant about it, he even refused to speak with Peter Jackson. I understand personally not liking the movies, but at least he could conjure up some valid complaints. Maybe the casting, dialogue, scene additions, scene removals, something that is reasonable to criticize. Personally I think Tolkien was smart enough to respect the work and love put into the trilogy. He would certainly be vocal about his problems, and he would like quite a bit of it. I think he would like the set designs, the music, most of the casting, and most of the infamously beautiful scenes, like the Gray Havens, or Mount Doom, or the Battle of the Black Gate, or Lothlorien. Good thing not everyone desires power over others. Imagine everyone desired the ring of power and would use any means to obtain it.

Most actors would act all proud here like they would a little bit act like they want it, and then just move head fast away, and say no! There is tempest in me, but I do not desire it! That's why I love this, more honest and she would genuinely long for the ring, you can feel the change in her inner personality, showing how weak we all are, and how ring is strong. Two different worlds of acting.
