His guitar playing sounds simple but try learning the melody to the end or really most of their songs and its hard as fuck to actually do it right

Agreed totally, but I think sometimes with a band like The Doors, etc. the playing of one member, while not going unnoticed, just blends (or contrast) so well with the other musicians.that many people just say, Wow, what a great band"! Band's are first about "chemistry", members need to appreciate each others talents and of course be of the same mind set musically, the it's all about the hard work of staying together, writing songs and playing together/

@@derekemrie2987 The Doors. were a democracy . Jim obviously stood out, but within the band itself. all the members contributed. So, it's up to the real fans to appreciate and give proper credit to each member and their contributions.

@@eltatoyo9211 Exactly, Ray was a masterful keyboardist, holding down all the bass lines and adding those wonderful solos. John, and the whole band had a keen sense pf drama, and those three learned quickly to appreciate Jim's poetic vision as well as his whimsical and often wild and unexpected ways.

old hippies. I spent a few days with Santana and he speaks a language that is only used by the original hippies from San Francisco. Very hard to follow. You really have to be alert and pay attention.Robbie is from the same era! That language traveled thru the bands back in the day.Try listening to Grace Slick or Wavy Gravy. Joe McDonald or Paul Kantner. All the same.

Robby never overpowered Doors songs, his riffs complemented and intertwined so well with Ray’s organ. Not too many bands ever had that unique organ and guitar combo. And Robby had such intricate and cool riffs. My ears usually hurt from most rock guitar after awhile , but I never tire of Robby, it’s just so good and soothing.

Simonize41 Look who his contemporaries were at that time, Jimmy Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi , Jeff Beck, Ritchie Blackmore just to name a few. All are guitar beasts in bands that are very guitar forward, all extremely talented, all iconic. If you are in a band like the Doors, which is not a guitar heavy band, then you won’t stand out in your field , especially with guys around that I just mentioned. It was said in the original post that Krieger was underrated and I put forth why that is so. He simply is not in the same league as those I mentioned and is also playing guitar for a band that simply does not showcase masterful guitar playing like so many bands at that time did. Zeppelin, Sabbath, Cream, Deep Purple , Jimmy Hendrix all kicked the guitar into overdrive whereas the Doors did not. Robby is not underrated, he is right where he should be in the annals of rock guitar.

@steve k. you are partly right, only thing you got wrong is that they all were great musicians who had a unique style as a band. Densmore is a great drummer and Morrison was way beyond just being a poser. He was a very talented singer. But you are right that when it comes to The Doors people tend to forget how gifted they were as musicians and rather talk about other things.

Was hanging out with an older cousin while he was working as a stagehand in the spring of 1968 when The Doors played at Westbury Music Fair on Long Island. I recall that LSD (acid) was very much popular back then and one of the bandmates (I forgot who) mentioned that Morrison was soooooooooo screwed-up because 'his acid kicked-in.' That was about 20 minutes before they were set to go on. So my claim to fame was making Jim Morrison a cup of strong Maxwell House Instant Coffee and although he drank it up ... he did say it was the worst cup of coffee he had ever had !! What he didn't know was that it was the first cup of coffee I had ever made. (lol) The crowd didn't care, however. They all went ballistic when they (finally) began their set ... as they were running VERY LATE to begin with.

Every time i see an old rock musician remembering their lives, mainly when some of their mates have already passed away (in this case, Jim and Ray), i start to tear up. I mean, imagine the memories coming through his mind. Times that will never come back, but which were legendary.

Every time I see old rock musicians I always think about how it looks like they’ve never made it last the 60’s, minus a select few a la iggy pop. A lot of these dudes stayed stuck in ‘68, it’s sort of sad past a certain points. A lot of early punk musicians have done the same thing, stuck in youthful rebellion, whereas Krieger seems like he’s stuck in the summer or love.

I particularly like that he does not play with a pick, just fingers. Likely because of his backround playing flamenco but as someone who also plays with only fingers, I understand it's about comfort as well. Robby is probably like me insofar as I play better without a pick. Just using fingers is like having 5 picks and I can play more notes more accurately and much faster. I am a pretty solid lead guitarist without a pick but a total hack with one. I imagine it's very similar for Robby.
