Are these overseas, low cost, Chinese carbon fiber frames good?
And.... Should you buy one?
I was contacted by Trifox, a maker of low cost carbon fiber bicycle frames, and was asked to review their product. Reviewing one of these frames was always on my list of things to do. I was never sure how good the frames are so this was my chance to find out! In this video I look over a full suspension, carbon fiber mountain bike frame from Trifox. So far, so good but is it the right choice for you? Should your next mountain bike frame be an overseas Chinese frame? Let's find out!

I had a tideace hardtail (same deal cheap Chinese carbon) that I rode hard and really put it through the ringer. It did amazing, 0 issues, sold it to a friend BC and it’s still going strong. Has several races under its belt. I also have a toseek Chinese carbon seatpost, saddle, stem, and bars on my fixed gear with 3000 miles on them and no sign of fatigue. Guess I trust the stuff, but I’m also a reckless guy at times hahaha

I bought a mtb hardtail chinese carbon frame about 7 years ago. $399.00...Threw on all my Shimano components on it. Ride it regular in the santa monica mnts. I weigh 180 lbs. No problems. Frame is solid. 🦅

My first full suspension MTB was a carbon 29er frame from a Chinese company called Ican that came with a 2yr warranty & that only cost me 375 bucks that was about 5yrs ago & it was a nice looking frame. I built it up with all thee bells & whistles because the cost of the frame was so low & rode the👹HELL👹out of it & it came with a 2yr warranty. The quality of the frame was top notch & very professional & during that time I had no issues with the frame itself. But🤔 After about two years of riding it hard I found out that the kickback on the rear put a lot of stress on the Sram Xdrive and the end result was a broken Xdrive. I'm now riding a MEGATOWER that fits my riding style a lot more & which is tough as nails & I still have that Ican frame. I'm about to blow the dust off it a rebuild it as a lite xc bike & ride it on days when I'm not in the mood of sending it or go'n big. If you're looking into getting a low-cost Chinese carbon frame the only thing I can say is do your homework before you buy👍🏾

Sweet looking frame. Quality control in consistency of the carbon in the frame would be my major concern, although most carbon frames from big manufacturers are made in China anyway. Next would be parts and availability. Do the swingarm pivots have bearings or bushings and can you order replacements? Last, does it come with a sheet telling you the sizes of parts you need, such as what bottom bracket fits or the correct length shock?

I think this is a good discussion and love the comments. I'm a elite XC racer from Vancouver BC and I ride three chinese carbon frames. Two are dual suspension and one cross bike. One is five years old and one three. All are still in excellent condition and take a beating on the famous north shore. Now I can tell you a different story about another purchase I made last year. It was a chinese trail bike frame 150mm rear travel. Had fun on it until it broke in two pieces and I was lucky to walk away. The company was on Aliexpress claiming there the biggest carbon frame builders. So yes you have to be very careful of the company you choose. Might be a good idea to avoid BXT almost killed me. Ican trifox are good my bikes I ride now are Ican and are super solid. Cheers! Seth

I think alot of people will just want to be able to say, my bike is carbon fiber. But the way I jump (actually I guess it's more about the landing) I would be curious how it would hold up. I have several budget forks from China that I have put through the ringer, and they are still going strong, so who knows.
@mtbboy1993
@mtbboy1993 3 жыл бұрын
but the weight of the rider, and how many high frequency shatter it gets will place a role how a fork will fail, same with frames, or big repeated loads, landing smoothly on jumps won't always be what kills it, unless it's a huge mistake with the layup or huge void so frame snaps, or big holes in the legs or they use different material on the fork that is much weaker. I will never trust Copycat companies.

if done right it can be great, but the problem is that most brands don't have proper quality control, and voids happen, things crack, and older bikes from 2010ish had worse layup, but things have improved, but still not aerospace level of quality control and manufacturing which is needed if you want it to be perfect. but an big disadvantage with carbon is that it can't be recycled.

When I was a young kid in the mid to late 60’s every one would say “made in Japan” - “has to be low quality”. Well, China was that way a decade ago. Folks, just about every CF frame built is coming from China. That is where the experience and expertise is today - period. Who is leading in modern geometry and design - and who owns the most progressive molds- that’s a bit of a different story. But don’t be fooled , the Chinese make the world’s best CF frames because they make all of them! Finally I once saw a broken Santa Cruz frame, oh and a broken Trek frame, oh and a bunch of taco’d expensive wheels. So what!! That happens to every manufacturer’s products everyday. So don’t tell me you saw a busted Chinese cf frame once.
@rgmtb
@rgmtb 3 жыл бұрын
Well said dude. I also very much agree with your point regarding design. It's not as much about making the frame as it is about the design being made. They only thing I worry about (and will only know with time) is if THIS FRAME is made with quality. So what I mean is not that a frame from China is made poorly, your point on this is spot on, but if this frame was made well. I think that might be what people are worried about. The quality checks might not be as high as with other name brands. Now that has zero to do wit the fact that the frame was made in China but that it was not made well. I'm hoping that this one was made well since I'm loving the bike so far and want to ride it for quite some time :-)

@@rgmtb I did an xc build this summer using a frame from Seraph. I have been using the bike regularly since then. It’s an xc bike with 100mm of travel. It’s a fantastic bike for the intended purpose an so far the frame is great. I also own a Canyon Strive - an equally fantastic bike for a totally different purpose. When you finish your build I believe you will think of bikes differently. On my build, the fork was the most expensive item followed by the drive train, then the wheels and tires. So based on money spent, my build is a SRAM bike. My Canyon is a SRAM bike too. So my new thinking on frames - that’s the piece that can be swapped out!! Building makes you thinks of bike a bit differently. I look forward to hearing more about your project.

The Chinese make everything. They have many great manufacturers that care about quality. They have a bunch of shady manufacturers too. If you can find the right ones, you’ll be okay. Got to avoid the stuff from Alibaba that 90% of Amazon 3rd sellers offer. DJI for example is a great Chinese company. I would buy a Chinese frame as long as I knew what I was getting and had protection ie paying through PayPal.

You are totally right! You don't build a mountain bike to save money HAHAHA! You build it for the fun of it or because you want it to be just the way you like. Heck, I would go as far as saying that I could be cheaper to buy a complete bike, sell the parts you don't want and buy the upgrades! Building your own bike from scratch is NOT CHEAP at all.

@@rgmtb Looking to see if there are voids (air pockets) in the carbon. I see You Tubers like Hambini x ray the frames with some of the top brands having substandard composite layup. Letcher Teknik actually cuts the frames in half after destroyed and you can see the excess epoxy and voids. Canyon bike taut that they xray each carbon for quality control. I just thought it would be interesting since some 3k Euro frames are poorer quality than a 500 Euro frame under the x ray.

Good you don't over do it, and make it too hard for your self. one more reason people don't like to buy Chinese now is due to human rights abuses. but a lot of the stuff you buy is made in china, for example Poc boxer chamois, many frames, some are made in Taiwan, Indonesia, where a lot of clutching is also made. but just cus it is from china does not mean its junk, but a lot of the stuff from some think that. but also only buying from own country will be impossible or hard, if I did that in Norway I could barely buy anything, but here biggest business is oil, fish, wood, paper, so far only bike gear company I know of is Kindernay gear hubs, it's made in Europe, it 'also some sports custom wear stuff but I don't know where those are made. all Norwegian bike brands are mostly just using catalogue bikes, some are rebranded Rock Machine for example, I just buy what I need, get what I can at the time, I can't make things too hard for my self like some do.

would I buy this? no. I will stick with aluminium for several reasons, but also I want modern geometry, sizing, which many brands don't offer, but they are slowly catching up, I see specialized has definitely started to get closer with their enduro bikes. I love my Nicolai/Geometron G1. but only the shock cost amore than the frame here, but it's quality, strong aluminium 7020 T6, the frame has features that only few others have. is it overkill for most trails, yes for sure, but I think it makes sense for me and for what I ride, like being able to replace the threads in bash guide mount, the brake mount. the cable routing is external, and done well, I am not a fan of internal routing, on my bike you can swap the rear brake in 4 minutes, at least that's what Paul Aston did on his. but that's not something I would do, but great for testing brakes I guess. I am not a fan of carbon not being possible to recycled, I have a Carbon handlebar on my bike, but that was only by chance, it was just what I could get at the time, fast, but it held up well, but I rarely hit my handlebars and if I do it's the bar end plug. But there are so many decent bikes now, and even at lower price there will be more bikes I am sure, and I am sure there will be less mistakes and more nice features, and better geometry. so far the cheapest hardtail frame I found is Ragley mmmbop, head angle is slack at 63 deg, but the chainstay stays the same, and no size big enough for me, like with most brands, I need the largest or a larger frame tan they have to offer. but I hope this changes, it probably will.
