If you shoot often with the Black Powder Revolvers, and use lube on the end of the chambers, this might be something to try. Still working out some of the bugs, but initial testing shows promise. And the best part, if it works out, the cost isn't much more than a tube of your favorite lube; if it doesn't, you own another gun (grease).

Went through pretty much the same turmoil you suffered, for lube delivery systems. Then....like you, I started using a small grease gun a few years back. Works very well. The trick is to get lube consistency just right, for easy dispensing. Had to play with that a bit, but looks like it's working out alright.

Neat. So I'm not the only one that got tired of those rubber pistons dissolving in the grease after a couple (well, maybe 20) years and figured there must be a better method they used in the Civil War. O.R.🤔

I totally agree. That consistency is critical; at least in mine. I finally figured out that the small bolt on top must be for bleeding air out. That seemed to help when re-loading it. Once it gets primed it works slick. Thanks again for your comment. O.R.

Probably you'll either love it, or hate it. Not real sure where I stand yet. It got real slippery when it appeared to have an air lock and I had to take it apart and re-charge with a thinner mixture.. Lately it seems to have gotten on the better side of me. Thanks. O.R.

Its interesting. I started 20 ish years later than you and have been round the same roundabout of methods. I started using auto grease and syringes and spatulas (that's what we were taught back in the 80s) then more recently learned of tallow based lubes and patches thanks to covid (nothing much else to do but utube) and obtaining a copy of Keith's book. Tallow based DEFINITELY superior to petroleum base. Im leaving that stuff for what it was intended. My jury still out on the application method. Be interested to hear how you get on. :-) Thanks for the video

Had some initial issues. Not saying that they are solved, but was working well when everything froze up here. I set up my neighbor and he was happy and appeared not to have issues. I did empty out the grease cartridges that came with the unit and am using that on the inside with my lube (which may have been too stiff at first). Will know more this summer. What I can say is that when it works, it is slick. I need to make some sort of wrap for when the gun gets slippery. Wouldn't say Elmer wasn't correct about the lubed patches, just think that what he said had a huge impact on loading methods. We can't forget that he was using a gain-twist gun which might not have been as sensitive as what we currently have, and probably had a faster spin than most of the 36 cal up till recently. Thanks for the comment, I better stop now, as I can get too wordy. O.R.

@@oldranger3044 yes! Prevents chain fires but don't lube the barrel. Also as gun heats up some lube flows to the cylinder pin. It is the front of the cylinder that gunks up.

When it is working it is great. I've had some issues with what I think were air locking. Had to take it apart several times. I got so "greased" that I darn near didn't get into the house. I wiped off as much as I could, still needed someone else to open the door. I mixed up a batch of thinner lube that seemed to hold in warmer temps and functioned at 40 deg the last time I was on the range. Is that mink oil liquid, as you said you use it out of the tin?? O.R.

Those do work, and I have used one. There’s maybe a couple of advantages with the grease gun. One is it handles lube that is a bit stiffer than I could force with the decorator (at least the metal one I used). Also, the gun will dispense an equal amount, and you can get it further down into the chambers if you use less powder. A disadvantage is that it oftentimes gets air locked after refilling. Again, thanks for the suggestion which may be the ticket for folks that are only part time cake decorators, and have an understanding wife. 😁. O.R.

@@dickgoesinya9419 If you had them, then you aren't a spring chicken either. I got a fanner 50 when I was in JR High, or early high school. It was my pride and Joy. Kept in a special spot in my Grandmother's house. Then I got older like Peter Pan did in "Hook" or Jacky in Puff the Magic Dragon, and forgot about my toys. When I regained consciousness, my Grandmother had died, and I think my Cousin in Law sold it at a Garage Sale, along with my Daisy pump BB gun, and a couple of 94's too. 😥. @@dickgoesinya9419 And the memory. I picked beans one summer for $.03/lb for a farmer and used the $7.00 to get a 94 style Daisy. I filed off the front sight so I could only point shoot with it. Lots of grasshoppers didn't have to worry about making it through the winter. That one I still have. It didn't work too well on the rats at the town dump, so I had to up grade. We would ride out of town with the 22 across the bike handle bars to the dump. It was a different world. O.R.

I use a 60cc luer tip syringe. The local hospital fills them with M&M's for Trick-or-Treaters at Halloween, then the kids use them for water guns. They are quite good for lubing BP cylinders!
@oldranger3044
@oldranger3044 2 жыл бұрын
I used to use ones that my brother had for dairy, but they were only about 20 cc and had a small short tip. That was one problem, the other was that the rubber piston seemed not to like the lube after time, and sort of melted and would stick in the barrel. I have had some issues with this grease gun, but now seems to be working again. As with most new ideas, only time will tell. Thanks for the info. O.R.

There is no "old" methods. Lubing, greasing, oiling is a modern rangism brought about in the 1950s and 60s with the resurgence of black powder shooting. In the eras in history in which these firearms were depended on they used none of that. All lube and grease etc does is saturate powder making the burnable powder inconsistent and decreases accuracy. All you need is projectile, powder, and percussion cap.
@kirkboswell2575
@kirkboswell2575 Жыл бұрын
Historic H - Actually, lubing, greasing, etc Isn't a modern "rangism". It's always been done. Purpose being severalfold. Lubing patch so it didn't hang up and tear on the way down the barrel. Softening the fouling so more shots could be made without cleaning each time. And increased accuracy. Believe it or not, target shooters would frequently use saliva for a lube. They could use a thinner patch and improve accuracy when doing so. I will grant that you have a basis for your thinking, but that was military arms. Balls were well undersized and accuracy was irrelevant because the military relied on volley fire. Several hundred Balls launched in one direction all at the same time was pretty effective. But the civilian rifleman didn't do that.
