I had the Mid 2018 15 in, 2.6GHz Core i7, 512GB, 16GB memory, AMD Radeon Pro 560X 4GB (highest listed configuration at the time of the purchase), the battery showed 100% capacity after all these years but it only lasted a few hours when unplugged, also, it was always running hot to the point that couldn't be used on my lap, and since I bought it always was attached to a monitor on my desk. In January, I bought an MBA M1 baseline and it was such a pleasant experience that I decided to sell it. I do not regrate it at all, since I have the 4k external monitor, I connect it when I need a big screen and use it on the go thanks to the fantastic battery life

Thanks to you, and one other KZfaqr, I just got my 16gb M1 MacBook Pro with 512ssd hard drive. I was about to buy an Intel based I7, before I realized that these things even existed. I couldn’t wait for the NEW 14" or 15" M1X models to come out, so I ended up buying an Apple refurbished model, from the Apple store for about $400 less(with tax). It looks, feels, smells like a new one, and came in new packaging. My Mid-2014 Pro was tired, and wouldn’t even play 4K60 footage. I can now edit and view all of my 4K footage without a hiccup. I paid $1438+tax for both the upgraded RAM and hard drive on the M1. I highly recommend going this direction. I LOVE IT! Sometimes you have to wait for certain models to come available, in the refurbished store. Thanks again! Im a new loyal viewer.

Like the posibility of using more than a single external display, or using an external gpu or even the 15" inch display of the 2018 that for most people Who doesn't like smaller screens is going to be a pro compared to the M1.

I didn’t pay nearly full price because of school, but it’s insane that it was worth €3200 (probably over 3800 USD) new and will be outperformed by a €1000 Air. Says quite a bit about Intel as well. If you need to run Parallels/Windows Intel Mac is still the only option. Even if you are using Final Cut Pro an Intel Mac may still be the only option if you have a lot of 3rd party plugins that have not yet been (or who knows when will be) converted to M1 and there is still a whole bunch of other programs that need to be updated... The workflow on Intel Macs works extremely well and even though the M1 beats intel with the handful of native apps... what good is it if you can't run the soft? the workflow is King and is the deciding factor.

I have an M1 Mini and it's an incredible machine for the price. I'm really happy to see the industry finally getting away from x86. As much as I love the improvements to the architectures performance AMD has made the simple fact is that it's doing at a MASSIVE power utilization. Getting the performance we are getting from Apple silicon at the power utilization it has the future is looking really good for computing.

My 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro in my opinion is the best because of it’s bigger screen, thinner bezels and its i7 processor and not forgetting the magic keyboard which replaced the dodgy butterfly keyboard. Although I’ve never experienced it with my 2015 12” MacBook and 2017 13” MacBook Pro, which I’ve reviewed on my channel.

I have many MacBooks from different eras. Most are very useable for basic daily computing needs. But the M1 strengths get rid of problems that have plagued macs since OSX started. There’s no going back. Enjoy the M1 and buy a PC for the stuff the M1 cannot do. The price will still be less than a MacBook Pro.

As any of us who have used iPad Pro for anything since about 2017 (especially), we were not very surprised at the performance level. Apple's spin on an ARM instruction set chip just keeps getting better. So, stop acting surprised. Personally, I'm a 16" Intel i9 owner. Lovely machine. Being the fastest isn't the goal. Can you get your workflow done with what you have? Great. Also, M1 won't run x86 in a VM, which I need. I've not had the opportunity, but folks in the Python dev community have told me that libraries for M1 just aren't coming. Another hold-your-horses thing for me. There's room for both in this world, and if some still-good-for-heavy-lifting machines get cheap in the process, great. My spend on my 16" is a sunk cost. I'm making the best of it, and I'm not jealous of M1. BTW, the 15" models of that generation did not have good heat management. The thermals weren't really addressed better until the 16", but you can't buy that for $1,000. I like your treatment of used machines, usually. Stop comparing to M1. Rate used Intels according to different kinds of workflow, instead.

I think you're forgetting one major reason why many are going to stick with Intel MacBook's for the foreseeable future. I work in InfoSec and run a KZfaq channel. While it's easy for me to do by content creation with an M1 Mac mini, for my work, I require the ability to virtualize x86/x64 Windows and Linux VMs. This simply isn't possible with M1. Cloud-based virtualization options may be a good alternative, but otherwise the path forward is a bit unclear. Perhaps x86/x64 emulation could be possible, but that remains to be seen.

My mom got a base model M1 MacBook Air and once, I accidentally opened every application on the mac (which was about 50 or so) from the settings, and It did not shut down! It did not suddenly stop working and lag so hard! Which is amazing, and to add to all of that the M1 MacBook Air lasted around 2 and a half days from the factory charge, while doing zoom meetings, a lot of multitasking and work, while staying cool to the touch! These Apple Silicon Chips are really going to change a lot of things! 😌😀😄

Ehhhh something’s afoot here. I have a 2018 15” with the 2.6/560x/16GB and use final cut regularly on it. I recently bought an M1 mini with 16GB, considered the best M1 right now because it has the beefiest cooler, a carry over from the Intel mini. Did my MacBook scream its head off? Yes. Idk what the battery life was like because it was plugged in. The timeline playback of H.264 4K MOV files from my GoPro with a custom LUT and retimed at 4x was significantly smoother on my MacBook unrendered versus the Mac mini. The mini was getting probably 15-20fps whereas the MacBook was getting 30fps. FCPX was chewing at the 560x more so than the processor unlike the M1 where it seemed to be hitting the processor more than the GPU. I made sure both were set to Better Performance for playback. I thought maybe the mini was being held back by driving the 4K display over USB-C to DisplayPort but using the same protocol on my MacBook with the same monitor yielded the same smooth results. In addition the MacBook exported about 5% faster. Is this great? No. It sucks knowing my nearly $3k laptop from less than 3 years ago is getting its heals nipped at by an $899 entry level machine (factoring in the 16GB of RAM in the mini). It’s amazing what the M1 can do. But the Intel machines aren’t quite sealed in a coffin yet. Not until an Apple Silicon machine with a dGPU comes out.

Because I only could afford the $680 it cost me (shipped) from a reputable reseller. I have been using it for about two weeks now and it's everything I'd hoped for. Would I have liked a M1? Sure. But it wasn't in my budget. I'd love to see you do a video on laptops like mine in 2023. Are they still viable (if it's all you can afford). I think so, but I'm no Mac expert. Your thoughts?

While some here may consider this somewhat sacrilegious, this is one advantage of the “run on any IBM compatible hardware” nature of Windows. While it’s less polished & stable, you can still run the latest version of Windows 10 on Macs that no longer support the latest version of macOS (even all the way back to Macs that only officially support up to Windows 7, if you can trick those Bootcamp drivers into running on 10). With a little bit of fiddling you can also get the latest versions of Linux to run on basically any Intel or PowerPC Mac.

I would say only do it if it's in immaculate condition (esp the display), battery health is still @ 100% (I'll be surprised if you tell me that those 2 things are true 😄), and it comes with the 1-year Apple warranty. See if you can get them to throw in an extended warranty (AppleCare) as well. I bought a store demo 12" Dell XPS laptop back in 2008 for a nice discount, but it started having a few small problems not long before the warranty expired, and certainly soon after. The battery life was never great, and later got really bad. You just don't know how much internal abuse a demo-model device has taken, even if it "looks clean".
