I was the first person at a Storm/Roto Grip demo here for the new balls. I ordered the Rubicon and the IQ Tour Nano Pearl. They will work nicely in my new setup. I had a 4 ball and a 6 ball rolling tote. Put the bottom 2 balls of each into 2 ball totes and put the rest into the 6 ball. Now I just take a 6 ball and a 2 ball tote for league. I will never use them all but, I get a good arm workout.

That video ending, though.... and here we are with even more balls after you made the comment about balls you had not drilled by August to rate for sport shots, e.g. fast pitch & RST X-1. Oh yes, JR Raymond found the volatility to out hook his UFO by a bunch. Then Brunswick came out with the Zenith and Motiv the Forge Flare. Ebonite's Aero, on the other hand, while marketed as a heavy oil ball, is cleaner and milder than a typical hook in a box these days.

I swear half the fun of bowling is making up lists or bags. Like I have my Home THS 6, my generic THS 6, my generic sport 6, extended 4 bag sport shot gear, etc. And then you make fun lists too like the play up the gutter bag, the send it bag where you just want to bend it like belmo, etc. I'd love to see you do more updates like this to your setups, like how do new releases alter your core 6 for league, etc. You have league in 2 different houses that play different so I love your insight on designing bags for those 2 looks.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
I'm actually writing some stuff like that right now! I've been taking all kinds of stuff everywhere trying to figure out what I like on the left side or what gets the most use or fits the best, and I think I'm settling on some league bags, and I DO have two different houses I bowl in that I adjust the bag for, so yeah definitely great ideas. I've got some time off coming up here soon so I'm trying to get a lot of kind of different videos like that done, but that's a big and really relevant concept for me right now.

@@LukeRosdahl Awesome to hear man! Don't forget to actually enjoy the time off too though. We'll still be here ready to watch as many drops as you make. I liked the honesty about new ball purchases. @LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
@@deist3r Actually since I've switched hands and am making good progress, I'm starting to enjoy this more. It feels like there's light at the end of the tunnel now, plus I'm rediscovering a lot of stuff as I improve, it puts me right back in the shoes of the average improving bowler across the board. Righty, I knew what to do, I just couldn't do it and it frustrated me to no end. Lefty, everything is on the same level, execution is shaky occasionally, spares are kind of tough sometimes, and a lot of the time I don't actually know what ball I should go to or what moves I should make, so when I do make a move, it's much more of a guess now rather than KNOWING it's right and just hoping I can actually make the shot. And seriously, most people don't "need" the bowling balls they buy lol, I've put holes in tons of stuff here recently that I don't need, but it's just fun and I don't spend money on anything else, so it is what it is lol.

You should be doing the YT stuff cause it's fun sharing your knowledge and experiences with others. Happy for you man. Looking forward to the new content. That part about you learning as you go could definitely be something you could make a series of. Too many YT vids come from the perspective of "I've been doing this for ever let me show you how" and then they forget we have about 9 other questions on how they got to that delivery or knowledge in technique/lane play. An example being, no one ever tells you what you should feel when you come inside the ball and release a 450rpm shot down the lane. Just what it should look like. I can't see what I look like so I don't know how that helps me in the moment of the shot. I discovered a new pro shop guy who actually yelled at me for drilling new stuff if I couldn't justify a need. I started just taking the yellings and drilling the new stuff lol

Cool. Honestly, bowling balls are more fun than practical, but when it comes to sport patterns, there's some stuff you HAVE to have to be successful. I'm drilling 3 urethane balls in the next week or two, adding an Omega, probably a Prime, and a heck load of Phazes. A lot of them I'm drilling because I want to, but stuff like a Pitch Black and Omega are just necessary. Leagues are for fun, tournaments are for money, and there's a pretty sharp point where you go from drilling for fun to drilling for necessity, but either one is ok.

Hey Luke great video as always. Struggling with all these great solid choices looking for next benchmark ball. Currently in my bag that I have and iq emerald and hustle ink. I generally prefer to play straighter, but am not uncomfortable getting deep. Medium revs medium speed tweener. I am adding a phaze 3 already, but was debating between hustle PBR, new IQ, wild streak, and the MVP. I am looking for something with surface and don't currently see enough volume to justify much more ball that what was mentioned. Looking forward to your insight.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
That's really tough . . the PBR and IQ are on the smoother side and are actually pretty strong, the Wild Streak is longer and it can boom downlane, but it's also kind of a rounder controlled boom . . and the Attitude is super balanced. If you have an Emerald and Hustle though and are looking for kind of that amount of hook, the Wild Streak once you get 20ish games on it settles really nicely into that hook potential zone and loves going straight. The Attitude is going to feel way strong out of the box but once you get some games on it, it too settles down really nicely and walks right in. The ball motion and the way it firmly rolls up and punches is noticeable, but I've seen a LOT of straighter players so far really kill it with the Attitude, so watch some more video, but I think that's what I'm going to recommend. I can't WAIT to get mine retrofitted and get the new one in.

Your arsenal building strategy seems similar to the Kegel Training Center’s (KTC). Here is a general example: Fresh: !Q TE or !Q TNP 1000 grit 4.5x4.5x4 Ball Up: Omega Crux 2000 5x5x3 Late Hook: MVP Pearl 4000 grit 5.25x5x2.5 Burn: Hustle INK polished 4.5x4.5x4 Urethane: Pitch Black. 1000 grit 4.5x5x2.5 Each ball’s purpose: Fresh: blend wet/dry and moderate control Ball up: defined breakpoint and more down lane motion (asymmetric) Late hook: clean thru fronts even more down lane hook (baby ball up) allows closer angles Burn: almost no shape, very long hook phase (allows carry-down to become hold) Urethane: control friction on short patterns Your arsenal format seem to rely more on different levels of overall hook while keeping varying shape options open. The KTC’s format has defined slots for total hook and shape with no balls sharing one or the other.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
Actually this isn't really my preferred method, this is more how collegiate teams build bags, mine get built 90% on shape, and 10% on hook potential. Obviously you need various hook potentials, but I find that if I have the right shape, the hook potential doesn't seem to matter as much, or basically I consider shapes to be more important or what I pay attention to first, then we go to hook potentials. I'm finding on the left side that I'm really liking rounder and more continuous stuff. I liked rounder stuff on the right side too, but stuff that was almost straighter off the end of the pattern like the Wild Streak, Halo Pearl, etc. seemed to work better because they allowed me to hit it without going nuts. On the left side, the Pro Motion has been huge, the Astro and Trend got a lot of work over the weekend, and my eye is really liking stuff that's boomier because I can just feed it to the spot and watch it pull up and go. Seems like most of the stuff I probably wouldn't have gotten along with or stuff I didn't favor righty is exactly what I want lefty. I've got an Omega on the way and while it was too smooth and slow righty, it's going to get tons of action lefty.

Im pretty experienced with house bowling but i’m not too experienced with balls/laneplay for sport, so i got a question. If you have a 5+spare/6+spare arsenal, does that cover the “generals/basics” on most sport conditions? The “1ball 2ball 3ball” thing confuses me, because how are you supposed to use the arsenal if the 1ball isn’t the first ball you use? To me it seems like the arsenal is optimized if the 1ball is the first ball you use. Is there even an answer or is the answer just “it depends”? Btw i really appreciate your vids, im learning a lot from them.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 жыл бұрын
Well here's the thing, the 1 ball, 2 ball, 3 ball thing isn't based on order of use, it's built on strength. 1 ball will be your strongest, 2 ball will be a step down from that, 3 ball another step down from that, etc., but generally speaking in a tournament that's the intended progression of use too, HOWEVER, there are so many variables that you'll never be able to lock it down like that, or shouldn't try to lock it down like that anyway. Taking a varied arsenal of balls isn't always about stepping down throughout the set due to transition, it's about having several different options to be able to handle whatever's out there. You might get to a tournament and find that your 3 ball is plenty strong and you don't need to start with the other ones. The main point of building an arsenal this way is that it makes sure that you build a more varied arsenal instead of just picking a handful of balls you like and then showing up to a tournament and not having something you need. You should always make sure to take several different options, but ball reaction is king, so you should never try to create some kind of formula or progression of use and make it work. Do what the lanes and the pins want you to do.

sticko310 It’s a 2019 ball that was talked about or mentioned in one of the original episodes, but I did the original sport essentials a little different, I only talked about the balls out of the current lineup at the time that I thought were good sport options. I’ve seen plenty of people obliterate house shots with it, but it needs a fair bit of work or adjusting to be a good sport option. I’d have actually left the Nuke completely off this list too for the same reason, but people have wanted to hear about every ball. I AM drilling a P3 lefty soon though so maybe I’ll give it and a couple of the others I didn’t mention initially their own episode??

Looking for a good solid transition ball between Hyroad Pearl and Phaze 2. Not really sure if I should get an IQ TS or Hustle INK, or something else. What do you think?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
I'm thinking like IQ Emerald or Trend, either will be a good step down from the Phaze 2, and especially with them both having the same cover as the Hyroad Pearl, when you DO go to switch to the Hyroad Pearl, the transition should be easier/quicker because the reaction will be familiar, just longer and less of it with the HRP

Thanks for a great video once again. How would the MVP work on patterns with 21-23ml of oil, in your opinion?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
The OG MVP or the Attitude?? Assuming Attitude, it's one of the most versatile balls I've ever thrown, usually when I film videos I find limits, ball either likes going straighter or needs some angle or is too smooth or too angular from certain zones, but I never found a limit with the Attitude, it did everything I asked it to and looked good doing it. I can force just about any ball to work from anywhere if I change what I'm doing enough, but IT did the vast majority of the work without me having to change much at all, or the adjustments I did make were super reasonable. 21-23ml is right in typical house shot range, and it's perfect for that, that's kind of why I stuck it all the way down in the 4 ball slot. I think at 1000 grit it could legitimately be a 2 ball even, but it fits the best and the easiest on medium volumes.

Hi I'm glad I found your videos they are very helpful! I am considering adding a 3rd ball to my bag. Right now I have a Crux Prime and an Astro Physix. I like the Crux but sometimes it feels lazy and if I under-rev it it sometimes acts soft. The astro I like a lot and might just start using that to start? I throw about 14.5 mph, decent revs but not huge. Thinking the Trend might be a good option? Then I could go Astro > Trend on my league stuff and save the Crux for the heavy stuff? I also was thinking of getting an IQ Tour Emerald before I knew about the Trend, and while I'm not against that that gives me 3 R2S cover balls! Of course I am certain I could be missing obvious choices like the Phase 2/3 etc too. If you have any recommendations I'd love to hear them? I'm also interested to know what I'm getting from the options in terms of when and where to use them. I'm also considering picking up a regular Physix for my 1 ball instead of the Crux. Thoughts?

In the originals, I just talked about which balls in the current lineups made great sport options, but people have really wanted to hear about everything. I see plenty of people destroying house shots with the P3, but because it's so aggressive and boomy, it takes Nuke levels of adjustments to make it workable on sport BUT I think there might be some interesting lessons to be had there. any reason to have an axiom and an idol for a college bowler? Two hander 450ish revs, 17-18 mph pretty standard. Also have an original Halo and a jackal ghost and I wouldn’t think I would need that many strong options as a two hander but what do I know

Second question, what ball would you recommend for getting way inside? With all the rev rate today, guys are inside 4th arrow at game 3. I have an emerald. Is any ball better at playing way any because the emerald is so smooth?

Together I wouldn't say so, especially if you're in a 5 ball plus plastic scenario like most collegiate bowlers are. HOWEVER, if that's what you favor, there's no reason to take some other option just because you "should" have it if it's just going to sit in the bag and never see lane time. This kind of helps people get the general idea, but at the same time, take what you're going to throw.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
For the garbage time stuff, generally you want something continuous or that's going to keep climbing. I see a lot of people using Hyroad Pearls when the lanes get dirty, Belmo is a big fan of them for that reason, go back and watch the shows from the 2019 WSOB with him throwing it, it gets down the lane and then is round and continuous on the backend. The Hustle Ink is another good option, but the Emerald can be too early on top of being smooth, it doesn't naturally want to corner the whole lane, and especially not in a situation like what happens in college. You're not just getting standard track burn, you've got super hard friction to deal with.

Do u feel your eye for ball reaction as good on the left side ?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
CleSwag24 Yeah, but the moves are different because the lanes start out different and transition happens different lol . . I’m actually left eye dominant so I have a lot better perspective over here, so I can see what’s going on just as good or better but as far as what moves to make is sometimes kind of tricky. I’m figuring out what kind of stuff I like over here and where I’m comfortable at, etc. I thought it would be more on execution and less on laneplay and strategy, but waaay in the opposite direction. Completely different game over here

Hey Luke! Great update. Like you I am trying to finalize my league bag, but for some reason i feel like i am missing something. It could be b/c I don't have a dedicated spare ball and while my spare game isn't too bad without a spare ball its not Kris Prather good. That being said i like the idea of a dual-purpose low end ball/spare ball, but I don't know where that lands me. With so many options out there its hard to commit! My current league bag has an Axiom, IQTS, and IQ Emerald in it as 1,2 and 3 respectively. Do you think an electrify hybrid would work double duty? Or is there too much hook in it? Or is the answer just get a damn plastic spare ball? LOL
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
I'm mixed on that . . I'm learning to use plastic, but I hate it because I feel like it steals a spot in the bag. On the right side my Pro Motion was my ultimate bail out ball, plus it was my "spare ball." It got a bunch of extra traffic on it just picking up spares, but SPEC is really durable and doesn't soak oil up near as fast as other covers, plus it's a really smooth reaction so it made the perfect choice for a reactive spare ball, AND it gave me the extra option in the bag where plastic will literally just be for spares. At the same time, I rarely used the Pro Motion, and I'm finding now that when I have 5 balls to choose from instead of 6, I'm not really missing that extra ball, because realistically I don't find myself choosing between or needing more than 3 in the first place. It kind of helps to make ball choices easier and shows you that most of the time you really can work with what you have instead of trying to find the "perfect" reaction. AND if your bag is really built good enough, you're going to have the right option in there somewhere anyway. Over the last month of getting back to league and bowling a handful of tournaments, 6 balls go to league and 8 go to tournaments, but I haven't gotten into the second bag for league and haven't needed 6, let alone 8 at tournaments yet. NOW as far as plastic vs resin, my first reactive ball was a Brunswick Purple Monster back in like 2000, and that's all I had, so I either learned to shoot spares with it or I missed them so I learned how to throw it straight. If you throw straight at the pin and roll the ball end over end, there's no difference between resin and plastic. Plastic does take the beating and reduce wear and tear on your other stuff though. However again, the Electrify Hybrid was the ball I was using for spares to compare to how it felt against using plastic. I think generally speaking, ESPECIALLY from a wear and tear standpoint, I'd just go plastic because it's cheaper. I'm fortunate to be able to go through stuff pretty quick, so if something gets beat up, I just drill a new one, no harm no foul, but that's super expensive to consider from a general standpoint. I definitely pay my fair share for stuff, just in a different way LOL, but I think I'm going to recommend plastic here. ALSO one more small fun fact, the "clear" cover balls vs something like a Mix or Ice actually work super well on drier lanes as a strike ball.

@@LukeRosdahl You found the mix to just not do enough on dry lanes to strike with?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 жыл бұрын
@@coopergates9680 It's not exactly that, and it's tough to explain, but it's just how they roll. The clear plastic balls actually are rounder, more continuous, and they actually get into somewhat of a roll, so they tend to hit and carry better, while stuff like the Ice and the Mix just kind of spin and are weak at and through the pocket moreso than just not actually getting as much traction.

@@snoopy_79 Sorry I never saw this . . the clear covers are like the Belmo spare balls and the Team Storm blue spares rather than like an Ice, Mix, TZone, etc. They don't make them so much anymore but there used to be clear balls with different shapes and objects inside.

Is the mvp a good replacement for halo vision?
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 4 жыл бұрын
Not by a long shot, totally different balls. They have somewhat of a similar look on the lanes, but the Vision is a LOT stronger, plus asymmetric, plus a lot lower RG and higher diff. The Attitude is definitely a monster for the line it's in, but when you start comparing stuff like that on the conditions that the Vision is designed for, the differences start becoming a lot more apparent.
