Absolutely hit the mark with this one. I'm a fairly new 2 handed bowler and as such have struggled with consistency. But with working on my physical game and spare shooting I have gone from a 140-150 average to hovering around 200 in a matter of a year and a half. Keep up the great work, love all the content!

Exactly the reason corner pins are so difficult. Bowlers don't prioritize practicing them.. and then they get mad when they miss them. WHAT DO THEY EXPECT!

Wonderful video Luke! I had a horrible 2nd game last night on my Thursday night league. For some reason I couldn't pick up 10 pins at all but was crushing the pocket. I stood in the same spot as I normally do for 10 pins, I just couldn't convert it I was able to pick others up and managed to hit 180+ with several open frames. 1st and 3rd game was both 248 and hit over 670 series. Those nights can be very hard to not throw in the towel, I still hung in there and gave it what I had. At the end even though I didn't shoot my normal series I was still happy I did my best. Keep up the great work man. I love your videos

Last Sunday I had a few "great no tap" games. Exploding 9's. Cleared the deck but for a 7 or 10. Got a lot of corner spare work. Ha! That's where my Mix helps. Urethane, not a slick as a plastic spare. So it hangs the dry 1-2 board for the 7 but stays straight across the oil for the 10. I've used it for entire games thinking I'd work more spares but end up getting the highest score of the day.

This is one of the biggest points to make in a bowler mindset. Spares win games. That is it. The harder the condition, the larger the field, the closer the competition, spares matter even more. The problem is that spare shooting requires practice and patience, and either is a rare asset in bowling. A large number of bowlers just want to throw strikes, and don't want to waste time on practicing spare shooting. Great video again! Thank's Luke. P.S. Your left-handed release is getting faster and more relaxed. Nice job.

Great video. I’ve averaged 200-210 for a couple years. But I’ve always hooked at spares on left side and thrown straight at my 10 pins. This year I’ve made a change to throw straight at most spares. I was told there will be patterns that will make it tough to hook at spares. My goal this year and for the future is 218+. And I’m bowling on a singles scratch league that changes patterns every 7 weeks. Looking forward to 2020/2021 Bowling season.

Sounds like something I've seen in the golf world recently. The way for a 12 handicap to get to a 8 is not making more birdies but by making less bogies and doubles. It's easier to get better at not losing pins (or golf shots) than to make them up. Great info.

i'm surprised this isn't just understood. when i started league they offered free learn to bowl coaching sessions. our coach at the time from the first lesson said "strikes are easy, focus on spares. you can leave the ten pin every frame and still score 199 as long as you spare" learning how to get your spares doesn't exactly hurt your chances at striking either so i have no idea why anyone would focus all their attention on striking

I was always a fairly good spare shooter and averaged around 180’s, then I started to string more strikes together and was consistently averaging 200+. Finally shot that perfect game and another time left a ringing 10 pin that cost me another perfect game and my 800 series.

Luke thank you for this. I'm a 190 bowler, last year I had a tough year averaged 188 with the early end to the season the year before was my best ever averaging 198 in both my leagues. I hear scratch bowlers bitching all the time about handicap tournaments being unfair for them it's absolute BS. Also last year I went into a 50+ scratch and actually cashed. I got hot averages 222 over 4 and got into the cash round it happens but I was never going to win the step ladder. Still it was a blast.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah . . my lefty average is based off 212 right now, I get 6 sticks and I have ZERO chance of competing in anything because the scratch bowlers will always out bowl me, and there will always be a few handicap bowlers having good days, it's just simple math. HOWEVER, the handicap bowlers make the tournament happen, if it was just scratch bowlers bowling, there wouldn't be tournaments, and handicap bowlers don't ever walk into a tournament expecting to get money back like the scratch bowlers do. They just seem to look at handicap bowlers and if they ever lose to handicap at any point, well it's a broken system and needs to be done away with BUT you'll notice there really aren't just scratch tournaments because the scratch bowlers don't want to work that hard, and have a lot lower chance of making money because the competition is better. Great scratch bowlers will complain about handicap, but won't go bowl PBA regionals or anything . . . very strange.

It really is . . but it's been slapping me silly for the last couple months now since I started league. According to Pin Pal, my average would be 10 pins higher in one league, and 7 pins higher in the other if I was just picking up my single pins. The first ball will eventually sort itself out, but if you make a quality enough shot to hit the pocket, and then miss the "free throw" you're left with . . those add up SO fast. When people practice, they want to practice strikes and sometimes throw seriously at what they leave when they aren't striking, but while I crucified the "fundamentalists" and drills crowd in my last video, THIS is where they're going to beat you. You've gotta shoot spares like the drills crowd and know how to bowl like the by all means necessary crowd . .

Don't go front 3 then 9 spare...or else, Grumpy Cat!! lol Serious note, that's how I went from being a 180 avg bowler in hs to 220 now, on house shots anyway. Then you have the bowler like me who will never cash in a tourney. My hi-low range is just too small. I am always so close to my average that even 700s are rare. I'm carrying a 207 right now, but have only bowled 700 4 times, and never went over 725. But at the same time haven't seen anything below a 600 in months. I'm like the running back that if you need 4 yards for a first down I will get you 4 yards, but I won't get you 5. My one league just ended, I was high avg for league, but didn't even sniff the high scratch or handicap series or game for the year. You would think the high average should be in the top 5 for any of those. Nope. Just can't ever put a run of strikes together. Will only have 1 or 2 opens in a series (usually a split) but without at least 6 in a row, I'm just wallowing in the mid 600's. Frustrating.

But the thing is, now I Need a spare ball for the first time in my entire life. I'd like some knowledge on the difference between clear polyester and normal polyester. The general premise is on point, but a few comments: 1) 90+% handicaps hurt regular league bowlers because they don't really care to improve their averages (e.g. going from 120 to 180 would only yield a 6 point advantage per game at a 90% HDCP). Either people don't improve, or they sand bag early in the season and take advantage of the HDCP during crunch time to climb spots for the finals. Say a 150 average bowler wants over 60 points a game in HDCP. 70% of 240 is preferable to 90% of 220 - both give that player 63 points a game. In addition to your mention of high average bowlers more easily having bad days (more room to shoot noticeably below average), it's easy for the lower average bowlers to have an unusually good day. At 90% of 220, if a 180 average bowler shoots 279, that's 315 HDCP, making it literally impossible for a 220 avg. bowler to beat 2) Whiffing a single pin in itself does not cost 11 or more pins. It costs 11 if the next shot is a strike. If you Greek church the next frame, the missed spare only costs 6. IMO, sometimes spares don't have enough influence because of this. I averaged 219 for a 5-game qualifier on a sport shot in 2016 and lost to someone who missed a number of make-able spares. One thing I've considered is mixing standard scoring with world bowling tour scoring. Having a single X always count as 30 and only needing ten strikes for a 300 is ridiculous, so strikes should behave as usual, but it'd be interesting if spares were 10 + the first ball of the frame the spare is in, rather than the next ball. That would still have X8/ in the 10th frame a 20 point fill, but 8/ in the 10th would be 18 from that, without a 3rd shot. Front 9, 9/ would be 278. The drawback with this is 6/ X only nets 16 for the spare frame instead of 20, for instance.
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 3 жыл бұрын
Fair comments, but they're all coming from a scratch ideal or point of view. Most people are already as good as they're going to get, and barring a good match up will shoot their average or less when they travel, some just bowl league and could get better if they practiced, but either don't have the time or desire, the actual percentage of sandbaggers is very low, scratch bowlers just like to pick the less than 5% of people out there to make a case against handicap completely. You're always going to have outliers, but I can't see making a case or an argument against something for the small number of people that take advantage of it. How often realistically is a 180 average bowler going to shoot 279?? A 240 average can shoot 140 too theoretically, but the chances of that happening are just as astronomically low. HOWEVER, I've never agreed with any league or tournament that doesn't cap the total score for a game at 300. My wife and I run a small sweeper every other Friday, we use 80% of 220 and cap all scores at 300, but I HAVE seen rare occasions where it wasn't capped and that came into play. I will give you that it's easier for a handicap bowler to shoot a bigger GAME, but quite a bit more difficult for them to do anything more. Also, a couple taps and a 240 average bowler is shooting 210 hitting the pocket every shot, but they're also much more likely to bounce back or end up with a closer to average total. That's true on the math, but was more going with my theme of also hitting the pocket more often and leaving more makeable stuff. I kind of like the world bowling scoring, but yeah I don't like the 10 strikes for a 300 thing at all. The 10th frame in standard scoring adds so much to bowling that to remove it just doesn't work. Really enjoy your comments BTW, I like talking about more than just ball comparisons lol. I tend to get a little single minded sometimes too, so you make me think and also remind me when I miss/forget something. Thanks!!
@coopergates9680
@coopergates9680 3 жыл бұрын
@@LukeRosdahl I'm not advocating eradicating all handicaps across the board, just not a fan of percentages higher than 70. Interestingly, 70% of 240 would turn the 279 from the 180 avg. bowler into a 321, and a 210 avg. bowler shooting 300 would tie it at a 321 with HDCP. I don't have a very definitive stance on the 300 game score capping. I suppose on rare occasions, some people on a team would struggle and rely on someone with a ~190 average to shoot the lights out, then get ticked off if that person rolls over 290 and the HDCP is capped at 300 and they lose by a few points, lol. It does seem odd to have someone get to the 10th and have the team score the same regardless of X9/ or XX9 or something. Another option is to cap the total HDCP at some number of points a game, but that just hurts the lower average crowd. "When would a 180 avg. shoot 279?!?" It's probably someone you would point out in this video, who concentrates on strikes and misses a lot of spares, so the average isn't that high, but high games from strike streaks could be common. The 279 could even be a single pin whiff followed by the back 11 rofl

I have a 160 average(as well as most of my team around range) and it's like anytime any of us throw 200+, which is a lot more frequently than last season, everyone goes from super awesome to throwing every excuse at us. "Damn sand baggers," "if y'all didn't have that handicap, y'all couldn't compete (when we took them two games for scratch...)," etc. If y'all don't want to worry about handicap, don't join a league with handicap? Right? 😂😂 We know how it feels, there is a new team we played last night who have 100 handicap a person, and we got smoked even with winning by 200 scratch every game...

Scratch bowlers have very few places to play without handicapper's, fact!
@LukeRosdahl
@LukeRosdahl 26 күн бұрын
Yes, but the reason for that is because scratch bowlers don't show up to scratch events. Tournament directors don't want to run scratch events because the turnout is significantly lower to the point it's really not worth their time. Scratch bowlers also know that bowling handicap events is usually more profitable than bowling a scratch event, or more profitable more consistently, plus if it doesn't go well, they can always just complain about handicap. In scratch events there's nowhere to hide, you either show up or you don't.
