The Lumix S5IIX can record ProRes Internally up to 1080p 50fps, and while that's not the most eye-watering spec of this camera, I definitely think it adds a massive appeal to this camera.
The Lumix S5IIX can also record ProRes up to 5.8K via the USB-SSD function, but ultimately since many things are still delivered in 1080p in 2023, I thought it would be good to put the internal ProRes codecs to the test.

Did you say which color profile you shot in? I must have missed it. Regardless, I find that the Lumix skin tones lean more red than I prefer, though it’s not hard to tweak from v-log. Your shots tend to over emphasize the sunburns of the workers for instance, and red clothing doesn’t look look of it’s period especially the red dress in the joust. Beyond that I much prefer rendering out 1080 from an underlying 4k clip. Yes you can get by with 1080 internal in a pinch. Especially for something you know will be a throw away piece. But even then it’s only 1% of the time in my workflow.

Top work man, love the medieval footage - pro res is such a great codec to shoot and edit in. On my original S5 I used to always shoot 50fps in 1080 and upscale to 4K to keep the full frame sensor look - no one ever noticed.

Just goes to show that resolution doesn’t always mean everything… I’d much prefer a 4K camera with incredible Dynamic Range and Rolling Shutter over an 8K camera with sub-par performance on those other fronts. I think people get too hung up on it nowadays!

@@JoshCameron I think so - I feel like 1080 is such a dirty word and people make hard rules about shooting everything in 4K! If you're creating a great sequence of shots - and or an amazing story / edit - no one will pick up on the one or two 1080 shots in a 4K timeline unless they're really trying to look for them.

You can also shot in ProRes with APSC and P2P crops up to 60p which gives you 3 focal length for every prime. Very useful.

An oversampled HD image + Prores is such an awesome combo! Great detail given it isn't 4k and you get the chunky datarates and bitdepths from Prores. Plus easy editing even on 10 year old machines. It's wonderful. While I don't have the Panasonic S5 IIX, I do shoot with a Nikon Z6 paired with an Atomos Ninja Star (a tiny, screenless external recorder that records in FHD Prores LT, 422 or HQ). With the right HDMI settings the Z6 outputs an oversampled 10-bit image to the Ninja Star so I get the same awesome workflow and IQ advantages that this mode brings to the S5 IIX. I can highly recommend this workflow if you do not absolutely need 4k! FHD Prores HQ packs a ton of data, but because it is FHD and not 4k, the datarates are very managable. And you can take it down to LT for nice light file sizes while still maintaining good flexibility!

@joshcameron im a Lumix s5iix owner here as well, been happy with the camera. Great review, and would love to add a couple of feature requests based on my experienced. 1) open gate quasi_FHD format (so instead of downsampling the 6k to 16:9 keep it at 4:3 native ratio) 2) AF face detection for babies. Not sure if you can test this, but I have an 6 month old at home, and the camera always defaults the human detection to the adult in the frame (even if I specifically put the box around the baby), very frustrating. Other than that, this camera has been great.

I regret not holding off for the S5 II X for those ProRes, but it is what it is. Maybe it'll be worth trading it in at some point, or the next S line camera will have it as standard. Nice footage! I love visiting Leeds Castle.

I think that this footage is more than good enough for a lot of productions. I feel like consumers don't care for 4k as much as we do. That 1080p looked really good.

Nice video, as usual! Did you ever use HD on the first S5? I did some tests, and the HD stuff turned out soft, a little bit aliase-y and overall not nice. In all codecs, and FF or crop. The complete opposite to my Z Cam F6, which uses the same sensor, and has great HD. HD is bound to be a tiny bit less visible resolution, but I'm talking about quite noticeable softness. ProRes HD is still default for delivery for broadcast, so this is a real plus for the camera. If you could do some tests of 4K (any codec) versus ProRes HD, that would be unreal.

This whole video was shot in a mixture of 4K, 1080p and 5.9K - but I won't tell you what parts! I think it all blends together really nicely :) I never really used FHD on the OG S5; I was mainly using 4K so unfortunately I can't comment on the softness too much. The HD footage from the S5II and S5IIX is great though :)

Good thing is ProRes 1080p in 24/30P uses the full sensor readout so the quality is really good. Most clients still want HD footage so as such, shooting in 1080p which is downsamped from the 6K sensor is still a great choice! I found that it gets rid of some of that "harshness" and looks pretty nice and organic if you're not upscaling it like crazy.

It's not downsampled. Lumix line skips for 1080p. So you do get the same bokeh, but you get objectively worse noise from less light and it is less sharp than a native or downsampled setup.

I’ve gotten used to the quicker offload provided by SSD recording, initially on the BMPCC and now on the S5IIx. The key is finding a drive small enough that it doesn’t get in the way while hand holding the rig. For me that’s been the Sabrent Rocket Nano drives. Affordable, fast, and very compact.

I thought that the PDAF didn't work in 1080p full frame. Did they fix that? That is one of the main reasons I haven't bought one (or two) of them. And also, thanks for the video, Josh. The 1080p does look usable.

@@jtchalatsis You are not hijacking at all. That is a very good question. I had heard it didn't work (in full frame) when shooting 1080p 50fps / 60fps, too. I don't know if that was fixed in the IIX (but not in the S5 II, only the S5 IIX).

This looks sooo good. Do you think the 1080p prores is a clean downsample from 6k? If the rolling shutter in 1080p prores and 6k is the same then the answer is yes. Is there a way to see more footage from that medieval thing?

I'm guessing it must be downsampled since the sensor itself has 6K resolution. The rolling shutter performance is pretty decent as well in ProRes 1080p! it looks super clean though; I was very impressed by it and have started to use 1080p ProRes in my day to day workflow for some things now as well :)

JOSH! This question is elementary but I'm still new. When I film with auto focus on, my video exposure goes from light to dark light to dark. I have the ISO set on a number and white balance set. How do I stop the pulsing on my s5ii. Thanks for your videos as always!

Great point. I still have a gh5, shooting in 1080/50 AI. If I shoot in 4k/50 I always store in 1080, getting 1080+. My tvset is a Samsung 4k. Should upgrade to 4k, although 3.2k in reality. Viewing distance is 3.5 meter. I am completely happy. GAS is not my diagnosis and I am not stuck in this marketing resolution rabithole 😊

QHD really should be an option, I know it's not a standard resolution but filming in QHD would allow for downsampling and reframing without having to jump to 4k.

Friend tell me there is no moiré filter on s52x, is it too noticeable when shooting in Raw video on an external recorder? And is it hard to remove moire in davinci on video? And you bought an s52x, did the video become clearer when shooting in proress?

Hey man what's the best colour management settings to use when you shoot internal prores with v-log? When I input colour space as V-gamut/v-log it over-saturates and blows out the highlights. Maybe I exposed poorly but just wondered if you need to treat the footage as apple-log because its apple prores or do you set it as v-log in colour management? Cheers

Isn't 1080 even more prone to moiré on these cameras? I'd really like someone to test out what conditions and settings are best to minimise that - hard to gauge if the people not mentioning it aren't bothered or if the people that have those issues are more fringe cases.

I shoot 1080 90% of the time. Anything that doesnt really require the absolutely intense imagine possible. Church videos, music content, vlogs, etc, 4K is overkill.

Coming from a sigms fp user, the distinction for 1080p and higher resolution only came down to freedom you had when it came to framing shots. That and when the 1080p isnt true 1080p has been extensively shown by experts. It comes down to codec, bit rate and the scaling method used.

Hey, I have an easy question.. Is the image quality better on 4k-6k PRORES VS the internal codecs in VLOG? I know BRAW brings the best image quality but I don't want to deal with a big external recorder. I was mostly wondering if the External Prores eliminates some of the strong sharpened look digital look. THANKS!

what i don't understand why they didnt put a 2.7k (1440p) , I wish I could record in this resolutio nto save space , maybe also panasonic would have put a 120 fps 1440p , but i don't edit that much in 4K , and if I can dodge to shoot in 4K , I just do it .

You can deliver power via USB-C, however it'll only trickle charge the battery inside the camera as far as I know. You could always do the same with mains power as well:)

Hey how are you editing pro res in davinci resolve because I keep hearing it’s not supported unless you do some complex annoying conversion to bmr!. I’m contemplating getting an atamos for my S5 to shot raw external and would prefer to shot pro res but don’t want to hassle of having to convert everything. Many Thanks and great video as always,

You can use ProRes in Resolve, it’s ProRes RAW that’s not supported! :)

1080p footage is good. Its been well known that most videos are viewed on phones. So its watch in HD at 1080p. I always felt that 4k, 6k, 8k are pushed as its something for content creators to talk about. The same with ProRes. Its almost as if videos are now more about how sharp and clean they look rather then the content.

I’ve used both and they’re both excellent in terms of AF with the new PDAF system. It all depends whether you want to spend that little extra for the Sigma :)

HD on the S1 and S1H looked so bad. It was clearly pixel binned. Is it downsampled on the S5IIX? I might have to buy the camera if that is the case. Downsampled HD from 6k or 4k looks almost identical to actual 4k or 6k unless you start cropping in.

Pro Res gives you more flexibility in post to push your coloring just a bit more than you'd normally be able to.

The benefits of ProRes really come down to the editing workflow in my opinion. It's a great editing codec, and many agencies like the deliverables in ProRes :) Depending on the compression you're working with too, it can give higher data rates and therefore better looking footage!

ProRes HD is a great option to have . It's overlooked many times. Does the sensor readout speed improve as far as rolling shutter on HD ? Thanks for the insight. The Lumix 5x ( short name ) has some great recording options.

I think you should never level your work based on people that “don’t care”. When 1080p was released a lot of people would say it was unnecessary and unflattering because it showed too much detail. Time changes, and anything that isn’t 1080p became outdated. To watch on a small screen 1080p and 4k wouldn’t make a difference, but remember that KZfaq is also available on tv. People might say they don’t care but a clear 4k image will surely impress people even if they can’t explain why. And at least for me, not having at least the option to watch 4k is outdated. As a shooter I would never shoot in 1080p in 2023. I was over it in 2017, let alone now.

The quality of that 1080P can vary a lot. If there's one thing I've learned is that resolution by itself doesn't mean much. I'd have prores 422 1080P over 150mbps gop 4k any day. You can just do so much more with it. That's not to say certain application can't benefit from higher resolutions but it definitely isn't the only important thing.

I continue to blown away at how many camera KZfaqrs don't understand video data. If you go to Panasonic you'll find that if you shoot basic 4K you can capture: [4K] 3840x2160 29.97p, 400Mbps (4:2:2 10-bit ALL-Intra). So why would you shoot 1080 that requires even MORE storage: 454Mbps (ProRes 422 HQ). The answer is that the bit depth of the color is probably higher in ProRes, that is, ProRes is probably storing 10-bit RAW into a 422 compression space. (I believe most 10 bit CODECs are fake, but that's a digression). To test this, and have a fun video to make, go film a challenging dynamic range scene. Say outside on a sunny day. Shoot first in 4K, then in ProRes 1080. Go into your video editor and see which footage allows you to bring out the shadows better without blowing them out. If my suspicion is correct, and the S5IIX is basically shooting near internal RAW depth in ProRes, I might go buy that camera and you'll have a happy sponsor ;) So, if true, and you're a filmmaker in a challenging scene where you know you won't crop it, better to shoot in a true higher bit depth in 1080p than an effective 8-bit depth in 4K.
