The child went on shows to get money to shoot up more drugs while marrying a man twice her age who was abusive. She did divorce this guy. Afterall, their hopes for scoring a shot at freedom depends on justifying her murder no matter how heinous. The defense knows that shotgunning the mother at close range to the mother's face was a contemptible act by the brothers (especially knowing that they had to reload their rifle in order to finish her off), so it was highly imperative that the mother be brought down to their level if they had any hope of ever walking free. Imagine doing that and then claiming that the mafia did it. No one can ever make any claim of moral superiority after doing something like that.
