I'm confused. How does outputs work on the rack ? No chance for outputs to external racks or speakers ?

your question is not clear, needs more specific terminology. output of what? the one unit has 32 analog-in via D-sub db25 connectors on back. the second RME unit has 32 analog outputs via D-sub db25 connectors. The D-subs are 8 channels each. Very common wiring format for ADDA. Some call it Tascam standard.

It's as clear as it can be. The spec claims it is IO. Are you saying , I would need two racks. One for inputs. Another for outputs ? That is a big expense just to have everything connected to proper ethernet. So I would have to chain a second smaller rack over digital for outputs ? 32 outputs is over the top. I would personally need 8 outputs for 7.1 speakers plus whatever more for FX racks. Def not 32.

I meant analog outputs. Maybe AES to fx racks that support AES if needed.

8 TRS outputs for studio monitors. n TRS/XLR analog / AES outputs for fx racks. headphone monitoring output to my headphone amp. etc. So it needs the expense of two racks. Or just buy the input rack and chain via digital to a different analog rack.

How do these converters compare to what's in ufx+? Do I need these? Or are they the same

No, they are not the same. They have the technology of the ADI-2 Pro/DAC series. You should try for yourself if you have the possibility.

Can you pair a M-32 DA with an ARC USB for use as a monitor control system?

The ARC USB is a remote control for TotalMix FX. The M-32 is not supported by TotalMix. For this you need an RME interface with TotalMix FX.

OK. So AVB is an open standard version of Dante. An Ethernet capable RME rack has been in my dreams for years. I don't like the big flashing leds though. This is a rack for me.

AVB/TSN is a complete different standard as DANTE, indeed open. You can DIM or switch off the LED's.

So with this solution. I need two racks. One for analog ins. And another for analog outs or chain to my Fireface 400 for studio monitor outputs and headphones correct ?

That is correct. You can chain with the analog I/O to your Fireface 400.

Why is there a web console sitting on the rack ? This becomes a security problem especially if it lacks constant security updates. The actual web server software needs to be kept up to date. It could even become hijacked onto botnets. It becomes an IOT device. This should be fully locked down using a Yubikey. The rack shouldn't even have to allocate resources to a web console. I would disable this to save resources. It should be a json api service at the very least. Nginx is good but unless it's tuned it will consume memory. Totalmix should be able to control this ?

Its accessible on the lan. Which javascript based malware attack Netgear routers exactly like this. If its left vulnerable with an unmaintained open source web server and embedded linux. Then that would cause problems definitely. For the sake of reducing resources as a web server by default needs about 600mb of ram. I'd leave that off. If it's running embedded Linux. They better keep this stuff up to date regularly like my router and nas is. It could even have a possible console port open which however nice it is, hopefully with no default passwords.

Hey Dan, it is common practice to have an internal separate network. If connected to the internet (which is possible thanks to AVB) the router usually double functions as firewall (NAT). And as mentioned before: no outgoing connections to the internet are established. If you still worry about security concerns, the web interface can be switched via the display GUI. All the controls can be done directly from the unit itself.

Embedded consoles like this are only a security problem if they are not maintained. I have to constantly keep all such consoles on my network up to date. They are very much a target from browser based malware hence the router console attacks. It uses memory resources anyway so could be turned off sure. It will be a while until I look at one of these racks anyway.
