Hey guys I'm back with the awaited M52 engine build video. this is the second engine I build for my E36 and decided to do a detailed build video. I have tons of content so I decided to split the video in a few parts to not make them too long. In this video I will show you how to prep the engine for paint. hone the cylinders and perform the piston ring gap procedure

Yo al igual soy fiebru de BMW aca en puerto rico tengo la dicha de poseer varios bmw los cuales son un e36 318 convertido a m3 desde suspension motor e interiores hasta frenos y la mas minima tuerca, solo le falta el vin de un m3, ademas poseo un m5 e39 y un 323 del 2000 el cual me trae a la pregunta que quiero hacerle. Crees que a un m52b28 (2.8lt single vanos) le puedo adaptar el sistema dual vanos de un motor m52tub25 (2.5lt dual vanos)? Es que tengo un motor 2.8 y el motor del e46 323 se calento y se fue de junta. Basicamente quisiera sacarle el dual vanos als 325 y instalarselo al 2.8 junto con el intake manifold. Si tienes alguna sujerencia te lo agradeceria. Dicho sea de paso yk vivi mucho tiempo alla en oceola vivi en la mexicali, en floral park dr, en st. Cloud tambien antes de regresar a p.r Un abrazo brother

One tip when painting an engine block, if you want a more "factory fresh" look apply a thin layer of grease over the surface of the freeze plugs on the block, that way the paint wont stick to them and cleaning them out after painting will give you a more 'stock' look to block.

Yay, another video! Been waiting!! Good on you on opening up the ring-end gap. Gotta find that balance between enough gap for expansion, yet not too much where you're going through a lot of oil. That'll definitely help avoid ring-butting/ringland popping. Regarding timing, why not run an ethanol mix and/or water-methanol injection? That'll keep your cylinders much cooler (helping avoid ring-butting even more--less heat = less expansion) and the extra octane and cooling will allow extra timing with a ton of extra safety too.

Loving the current content man. This is definitely gonna be resourceful since I am currently working on my first engine build. I'm doing a full turbo build to a Honda H22a4 out of a 97 Honda Prelude S that I am swapping into my 92 Honda Prelude Si. I'm doing a full restoration to the entire car as well.

You should keep your front load washer door open. Leaving it closed causes moisture to stay in and can start mold growth.

M54 built bottom end and boost on single turbo is a favorite setup of mine besides the new lt4 platform and the 2jzgte supra builds and rb26 r32 gtr's but a m52 is a solid build also. Less problems than the s series engines in my own experiences.

Alberto, when checking ring gap, place the oil control ring scraper in the piston to set the depth. You’ll get much more accurate placement perfectly parallel to the deck.

love the content alberto. just a heads up you dont want to put a lubricant while trying to hone the cylinders. you use a warm water with light soap... keep up the great videos

M52 bore is more common in 84 mm which is 3.307". multiply by .006 for top ring = .0198 ~.020" gap and multiply by .0057 for second ring = .0188 ~.019" gap. Conversion factors for boosted rings right out of Wiseco Instructions. User can tailor ring gap depending on level of boost they wish to run and amount of cylinder heat is going to be expected or known from prior testing. There is an M52B20 that has an 80 mm bore and these gaps would be a bit big for that bore under most applications (.019" top gap and .018" second).

The equation is based on the piston circumference. Are the 2JZs similar? I know we're talking about 2 3.0 engines, but one may have less bore/more stroke than the other. Plus, extra measures can be taken for cylinder cooling.

i dont know how good the m52 is in the states but in EU its like good for 300-350hp with turbo. The best engine i think you can do is get a m50 engine that is in e36 325 or in e34 525. that engine is a f¨¨¨¨ beast. almost everyone in sweden that uses turbo in a bmw engine is using m50. that engine is good like standard 400-500 or even more :)

nice video and attention to detail, I am looking into doing a similar build but my main concern is over the bore out-of-round / out-of-taper tolerances. I did not see if you checked/measured for this with a dial bore gauge...how do you know you can use the M54 pistons without the need for an overbore?

hey alberto i need your advice as well as your opinion i have my m50 engine iron block on my late 94 325i sedan 5 spd its getting to a head gasket issue but not too bad should i get it fixed /replaced with a cutring mls and while its torn apart replace cam , rods and piston from m54b30 making it a stroker or throw in a m52 ? need your help thanks ! subscriber -junkygarage

did you use M52TUB28 (TU - Technical Update) wich was equipped with cast iron sleeves located in the cylinder block. Double-Vanos engine included new connecting rods and pistons as well as renewed and improved cooling system and electronic throttle body. To me that your m52 look like earlier version with Nikasil coated cylinder liners without iron sleeves. i have plan do tubo project, with M50TU25. Which is fully iron block wiht intake vanos, only in latest M50TU .

i have m50b25 engine, I am thinking about to put a crank chaft and rods of m54b30 with pistons from Opel Omega thay have a 86mm,with modify original pistons and Remove some Millimeters from engine block, Afraid of high temperature and compression ratio, what do you think of the idea, what do you recommend?

Can you stroke the aluminum 2.8 block if your not boosting? Does that even make sense? I have a 99 m52tu and I don’t want just put a m54 in it.

Fantastic, I have an old E36 318is that I'm planning on turning into a track tool...plan was to go with an S54 drivetrain but given the cost...and if this works...may follow this route as well. Keep up the vids, you have one very interested viewer here.

this route would be the most cost efficient. unless you get a s54 super cheap. also this engine is very straightfoward to work with

I'm terrified of "cheap" S54's given I have a 2007 BMW Z4M Coupe which I'm sure you know has an S54...so I know all about the issues of the S54 can have...vanos issues, rod bearings etc when they are not maintained...plus it's been done to death in E36's...again, keep this up and the more detail the better, much appreciated. Very interested in this build. Hope you get into brakes, suspension etc as well. And ECU. Cheers.

Get an S50 or S52 - buy a salvage car from CoPart and use all of it.

CoPart does not work for me...I live in Toronto Canada...just the shipping/import fees would kill the whole deal. We have similar ways of finding salvage cars...similar websites etc but I wouldn't have anywhere to store a salvage car for parts etc...I would have to rely just on finding the parts

That sounds like a pretty small gap on the Rings I know most built engines are .21 - .27 but maybe that's because it's a different material.

Bear in mind these are stock pistons, not 2618s or even 4032s. We'll see how it goes, but I think you're doing apples/oranges. I think you're right about it being a different material issue.
