Dragonflies, Butterflies and other wonderful insects open up a magical world to the photographer. All that is required is some basic camera equipment and patience. The reward is a backstage pass to the most under rated show on earth - a miniature forest full of creatures you could not dream up. Join me in this episode where I offer some basic tips on macro photography.
Enjoy

Great video macro photography delivered and explained very well. Totally agree with you about natural light. Flash lighting on macros it’s not my cup of tea either.

Hahahahahaha the subtle comment about hares. Jeeze they are brilliant but, you find a hare and then compose your shot. Perfect. Just about to press the shutter and woooooooof gone. And unlike any other wildlife that runs 50 yards and stops, turns back to assess, hares, keep running for about an hour? Unless you don't have your camera. Then they'll walk right up to you, stop and have a wash! Beautiful images and compositions thank you.

Hi Adam, Too true - I returned to this field in March/April of this year with an old rug and lay flat for 2-3 hours. It took 5-6 visits but a few hares walked right up to me and I managed to get a few shots at last - have them on my Flicker page. Magical creatures. Jimmy

Thank you for your video. I'm a early morning macro photographer my self and I totally agree with you: I do carry a flash and led panel with me but I don't like the result. Best regards from Portugal.

Hi Julio, I've done a little more macro photography recently. Trying a different approach - with a 135mm lens at f2 - manually stacking 5-6 images and leaving a large part of the meadow in the image but as bokeh - will do another video soon - hope you watch. It's great fun. Obrigado, Jimmy

This would be a big no no for most photographers who photograph nature ( a scissors ) work around the problem and leave everything as you found it. But I love the video.

Cutting grasses is fine I would say avoid cutting the food plants of Butterflies etc. For me I work with principle of Grass = Cut , Everything = leave as is :)

Very well explained. I like the fact that for you it’s all about natural light and composing the image well. What I do disagree with is the use of a scissors. While removing distracting elements from the scene is important, it often is achievable by using a small twig or even other grass stems you can intertwine with the offending leaf or stem, thereby moving it aside. But except for that I wholeheartedly agree - and while i too carry a video light with me which I use from time to time and even when I matched the color temperature of the ambient light quite well, I still prefer those images where I used only natural light with a diffusor or reflector...
