I've watched the whole Brazil series so far and as a Brazilian developer I have to say. No one ever came close to capture the our gaming culture like you did. Not only that, but to be able to show the world that we are more than Samba, Caipirinhas and all the other labels we have out there. Awesome job.!!!

This isn't the first time I've heard Brazilians say that Brazilians are apprehensive in perceiving Brazil products as quality. There's a studio called Reiza and they making a PC racing simulator called Automoblista. I love that game. But my Brazilian friends I've talked to, they say the game isn't particularly popular in their country. People assume that since it's Brazilian, it's inferior to products from other countries. That's sad. But if that attitude is shifting, then that's good for everyone involved. I have faith that there's a lot of very talented people in that country and I sincerely hope that their fellow countrymen have faith in their emerging industry.

I'm brazilian and can say that this is, sadly, a thing here. I don't really care about brazilian movies or music in general but am trying to leave my prejudice behind and try brazilian games.

I think piracy has a lot to do with that too. Most of these people are younger audiences, and they used to buy AAA games for 5, 10 bucks. Now they have to deal with original games, but that's kind of the standard for them. When the audience see Brazilian games, even if they cost less, there's still that mentality of "50 reais? I used to pay less than that for GTA: San Andreas (or something like that)".

I work at Fira Soft, in Brasília, another game company. And the struggle, as show in the video, is real. We need to give 200% of ourselves to do a game in Brazil.

I've read a lot of people in the comments who blame Brazilians for the gaming situation in Brazil. They're not quite right. It's important to say that everyone is heavily harmed by the government here. Both creators and consumers are affected by heavy bureaucracy and taxation, which raises development costs and, therefore, the final products' prices. Considering that Brazil is a poor country, and most people don't even live with the minimum wage (R$954,00, or US$295 as of Jan/2018), it's obvious that paying for a game isn't always a possibility. As mentioned, services such as Steam have helped a lot, but we still have a long way to go.

I would like to add a favorite brazilian creator of mine: Danilo Dias, from _JoyMasher_ - _Oniken,_ _Odallus_ and upcoming _Blazing Chrome._ I would also like to mention other creators like Felipe Falanghe, director of _Kerbal Space Program,_ SGtMarkIV, maker of _Brutal Doom,_ and another dozen brazilian _RPGMaker_ game designers whose obsession with the engine produced games that completely overpowered my tech-obsolete life growing up.

Yeah, i'm was preety sure that's Papo Yo was a Colombian game. I'm actualy play the game a long time ago and in that time, i'm not know that the location of the game was in Brazil. Sure, it has a lot of resemblances. It's cool know that other countries are interested in Brasil and make games of it. I am very happy that you had the interest in researching our gaming market. Makes me think that i can go after my dream of make games. Keep at your good work. =)

Great series! That girl telling it like it. She's awesome. I love her energy and you can clearly see she's very passionate about what she does and what she believes. I can't emphasize enough how great this was. Good freaking job, guys. The only awkward bit was with that guy who barely spoke English. If it was hard for him, you should've told him to speak in his native language and subtitle it in English. But it's fine. Pretty sure most of what he said is perfectly understandable.

I'm a brazilian game developer and I can say that this video made justice to us. Yes, there is great games made by brazilians, even in other countries (for example Surgeon Simulator was made by a brazilian couple living in London). Great job, looking forward to see more videos in other countries.

Hey, Drew! I'm Arthur, narrative director for Sword Legacy: Omen. Just stopping by to thank you for getting to know the Brazilian indie scene. As you noticed, spoken not only by my partner, Bruno, but all the other game devs, we struggle to thrive. Still, we've got amazing games which reveal huge potential that's gradually evolving and garnering more visibility. As reference, in 2011 I wrote about game banning in Brazil and things were much worse then (www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/134878/the_battle_for_brazils_game_future.php). So, yes, our quests continue - ours and yours - as we all tread our own paths in this huge cloth map! Congrats on the amazing and mature work. Keep fighting the good fight and may it continue for years to come. Cheers :)

I just can't stop clapping this video 'cause him show an side of Brazil that too many people don't know. But the main reason of the brazilian don't know well our own gaming market is because of our own culture. Here, our own culture that is truly apreciated is the soccer, carnival, and our music, like samba, pagode, axé, sertanejo, and some others things (speaking in a generic form, of course), but that's not the problem. There's nothing wrong in one country apreciate your own culture, but recently, the quality of the brazilian popular things has been decaying in a way that a great parcel of the population have eyes only for the 'great' american culture, like triple A games, big Hollywood productions and the popular musics of the USA, like rap, hip-hop and pop. And there's nothing wrong in apreciate other country culture too, but adding the fact of the decaying and devaluation of our own culture and the overvaluation of the american culture ends up overshadowing good things on our culture and in other foreign cultures too. For example, we have everything that was said in the documentary about the preconception and unpopularity of the brazilian indie gaming market (and other brazilian things too). But for the other cultures, we have for example the japanese culture. Indeed have many people that aprecciate the japanese culture, but too many others still have a preconception with this, like animes, in a generic example. For many and many people, animes are seen like children's cartoon or just odd or even stupid, and there's the bad thing. And besides of the already cited decaying and devaluation of our culture, the overvaluation of the american culture and the preconception of our culture and the other foreign cultures, we have our policy that just discourage and prejudice the micro and small entrepreneur. Politics that only makes abusive taxes and a huge bureaucracy for the entrepreneur, especially if it is from the gaming market. But besides all this problems and barriers, I still have hope that one day the brazilian gaming market (and the Brazil as a whole) be great and strong, so that I can be proud even more than I'm proud.

Brazil is full of talented people, but there's a lack of communities, those people have a hard time finding each other. The same thing happens in the music industry, great bands were only formed because talented members happened to be in the same place at the same time. Watching this video it looks like things are changing for better.

The sad thing is that in Brazil people are not really willing to pay for games. Piracy is very common thing here and some free to play games are the ones who has major success. If someone is willing to pay for a game, they will propably choose for a huge blockbuster that will "guarantee" quality and fun time playing.
