We all know that running one-on-one meetings are important right? YES! And yet many managers particularly first-time managers that have not been trained struggle in this department. They are not sure the questions to ask or how to make sure the meeting is a success. In this video I'll be sharing the most common mistakes new leaders make in these crucial meetings, and how you can run an effective one-to-one meeting with your team members.

Hi Makeda! Your content is right on the mark for me. It's great to have confirmation that I'm on the right track with some areas and also allows me to reflect on & learn about my weaker areas.

Hi Makeda! Great tips! I like your content a lot! On the other hand, I have one employee who is constantly rescheduling or declining our 1:1, I thought this was a behaviour towards me but he does it to everyone.

Thanks Benjamin for your comment. Sounds like those who are in a position of authority with this employee have not set the expectation which is why he feels he can do this. I would level set with him to let him know that the 1:1 is mandatory :)

I'm super grateful that you are teaching what is overlooked: one-on-one meetings are the very foundation of trust. Thank you! I'm a big fan of The Effective Executive and The One Minute Manager and your advice aligns really well with both and builds upon it. I appreciate how you've broken down this structure and how well you nurture professionals to the truth. I'd love to feature you on my podcast if you're open to it. Either way, I'm glad I came across your channel and will be sharing this with my team and clients. :)

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave this comment and referencing further material that might be helpful for those watching. I haven’t read either of those books personally, but I have heard nothing but great things about the one minute manger. This is going to sound strange, but for me when a book is too popular meaning it has made it as mainstream thinking, I tend to want to read lesser known books in place of it. This is so that I can see if there are nuances from the lesser known books I can pull for my thinking rather than something everyone else already believes to be true. All that to say I unfortunately haven’t dove into it. That being said, the effective executive sounds like one I would read! Thanks for the recommendation. Also, sure - if you think your audience could benefit, I’d love to be on your podcast. You can reach out to me at info@makedaandrews.com

This so Practical & Effective and Shows how knowledgeable the manager is about the Work because they have clear directions or it’s a great way to develop clear direction from your team. I just had to restate it. 1-Cancel & reschedule often or do not have 1-1 meeting at all 2-Not having an agenda : What’s the point of meeting if no talking points 🤦🏾‍♀️ 3-Not to treat the meeting as a status update 4-Ask for feedback: if easier to receive makes it easier to give (like this) 5-Have a follow up process: empowers employee to set goals

1,000% agree on cultivating a culture of feedback. I always leave time at 1:1 mtgs. for staff to tell me what I can do more or less of and what can I do that I'm not currently, to support them. It builds great trust & transparency & a culture of feedback.
