can that 8" pipe be reduced in size to 6"? is it critical that it is so long? thanks

I would think 6" would be sufficient but I haven't tested it and it may not give the air and propane sufficient time to mix. Let us know how it works for you.

Great video, great instructions. I built one today. Had to make some minor mods because of parts my local home center didn't have (1 1/2 to 3/4). Can't test it yet because the gas valve/hose assemblies I have are made for patio cookers, but it's progress.

When it's up and running the heat that migrates down the pipe might exceed the melting point of your solder. I've seen people drill and tap the collar so they can drive in a pointed set screw to bind the copper pipe in place. Good luck and have fun. The nice thing about using the mig tip is your ability to try .23, .30 and .35 to get the best flame. You may want to add a way to control air intake to balance your flame.
@MakeStuffNation

I've run this burner frequently for hours at a time and haven't had an issue with heat migration. The airflow seems to keep the intake end cool enough. Agreed about the MIG tips. I've found that smaller works better on this burner. I added an air controller on my MK2 version, check it out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNChdJeHtrPUmYE.html

The regular white thread tape isn’t rated for propane. The gas will deteriorate the tape over time and potentially leak. Good news is that the yellow tape isn’t much more expensive and will add an extra measure of safety. It’s also available at Home Depot/Lowe’s.

hey ive been watching a few of your forge videos and im about to attempt my first forge...looking to build one out of a 20# propane tank, with 2 of your burners...couple questions can i replace the 1x3" tube with a longer one or will it mess with the air/fuel ratio? thinking of mounting those straight to the tank and then i can screw/ unscrew the reaminder of the burner housing Also if i made 2 of these burners, connected the brass fittings with a T then the ball vavle to run both off one tank will it still work? Lastly any idea how much heat these are through out? trying to figure out how much insulation i will need in my forge with 2 burners Thanks and i appreciate the videos by far the best video out there ive found!

The length of tube that you use for the body shouldn't make a big difference. I would check out my MK2 version video for a slightly better design that includes adjustable airflow. Using a T fitting in your hoses to fire two burners shouldn't be a problem.

That could work. If you watch the MK2 version video you will see that I changed the outlet size. It helps it hold a more stable flame. The main part is you want a big inlet and outlet with a narrow body. It creates a Venturi effect.

I like your burner design better than others I've seen. It's much less complicated and easy to make. Just for your information, that 1" pipe nipple is steel, not cast iron, and the reducing couplings are malleable iron. Your 1/4" brass pipe cap is always put on the end of a pipe, so to call it an "end" cap is redundant. It's just a cap. ;)
@MakeStuffNation

Thanks. This design does have a few issues though, the flare at the exit/flame end is too small. I've updated the design with a few changes and re-uses most of the parts. Its much more reliable, check it out here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eNChdJeHtrPUmYE.html

I actually just finished this build the other day and it screams. I ended up tapping the uncapped side where the gas line comes into the intake. Holds it extremely secure with no need for soldering. You do have to thread more of the nipple first to have enough sticking out, about half an inch or so extra.

Hey, I’ve been building something very similar to your burner for my first forge. We got everything put together last night and are not getting a clean jet like flame. It’s really long with a lot of orange at the end. I was wondering if you had any tips or pointers or things we can take a look at.
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 6 жыл бұрын
If its orange its not getting enough oxygen/mixture is too rich. It can be caused by a few things, not enough airflow (low pressure on the propane), too large an exit hole for the gas into the vinturi (slows down the flow and feeds too much gas), or the gas jet/hole not aligned properly with the body of the burner (doesn't draw in enough air). I hope this helps.

Well, we finally figured out our problem, and it wasn’t the mig tip size but rather the fact that the mig tip isn’t creating a seal in the threaded pipe. Looks like between the thin wall of the pipe and the curved nature of it that we were always getting a good deal of leakage around the base of the mig tip.

I am having a similar problem. Mine puffs at low pressure but won't allow me to increase the pressure. I think I'm also leaking around the might tip. Not sure how to get a better seal on the joint.

Is this running directly off working pressure natural gas? Does it need to be mixed with air pressure?
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 2 жыл бұрын
Running off propane (LPG). If you're using natural gas you'll need to add a blower.

Man whenever I tap something I insert the square side into the hole of a 1/4 3/8 inch socket to 1/2 inch hex head thing and use a socket wrench with a half inch socket on it so I can just hold down and ratchet away backing it out here and there to clear debris it works so much better than the t handle or chuck type wrenches that come in the cheaper tap and die sets because you get the most consistent start without spending a chunk of cash on a decent handle a 3/8 in drive to 1/2 inch hex Stanley adapter is only like 2 dollars vs 40-70$ for a ratcheting tap wrench and all I do is secure it in the drive with a little strip on gorilla tape to make sure it stays straight while I'm placing the tool and starting it.

The iron pipe doesn't really need to be the exact diameter that you used, does it? Do you think that is i used a smaller diameter pipe it would make the burner more or less efficient?
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 7 жыл бұрын
You can use different diameters. The important part is the flares so you get a good venturi effect. I'm not sure how it relates to efficiency but generally the larger diameter burners will put out more BTUs.

I am making this and i cant get it to solder. What type of flux did you use? Mine doesnt stick.
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 7 жыл бұрын
I was using a cheap bit of lead free flux core solder I had lying around. Sorry I don't remember the specifics and I'm out of town for work so don't have access to it right now. I also had a bit of trouble getting it to stick but it would flow into the gaps so I just gobbed up enough of it to keep the part from spinning.
@monstermash7487
@monstermash7487 5 жыл бұрын
Before you solder you should clean the pieces with an acid or vinegar. most solder is flux core or has flux wrapped around it. And if you're using an iron clean it with Sal-ammoniac first. It should stick.

Would I be able to use a galvanized 1-1/2"x3/4" reducer safely? (the end that the brass fitting goes through) My local hardware store doesn't have that size in black pipe, but has all the other stuff

I am trying to start backyard forgeing but am running into a problem. I am using a graphite crucible and even letting it heat up for 10min no melting is happening even after 15min. What ami I doing wrong?
@MakeStuffNation
@MakeStuffNation 3 жыл бұрын
A crucible is used for melting metal, not heating metal to blacksmith/forge. Either way, a crucible alone is not enough, you have to put it in an insulated furnace, forge, or kiln to heat it.

If you really want clean and neat tapped threads, use your drill press. Tap goes in the chuck just like a twist drill bit. Clamp your work in your drill press vise, using copper jaw covers or whatever you usually use to prevent marking up soft materials. Take the belt off the spindle if it is hard to turn by hand. Turn the spindle by hand while you keep a little downward pressure on the quill and bobs yer uncle, perfect tapped threads even in soft metal like copper. When you are tapping in the side wall of tubing, getting the tap started square and keeping it square and steady is important, because you only have a couple of threads holding your threaded fitting. If the fit seems too loose, don't run the tap in quite so deep.
