Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Have you ever been made to seem like the bad guy? Have you ever had everyone turn against you when you were just trying to do something good? Well what about, have you ever had people hate you so much for trying to do the right thing that they blow up your office and you have to flee your home? No? Well all of this and more happened to one Ida B. Wells. In today’s episode we go over the life and legacy of Ida B Wells and how she changed history in so many ways.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

Genuine question cause I'm curious, is black history month both January and February? Or did you just choose that wording since it's closer to black history month? If it is both then awesome we've decided to dedicate both months to learn about black history (although we should learn about it regardless of the month)

Everyone needs to learn this history to understand North America and why things are they are now. This history explains why the same problems come up over and over.

Lifelong resident of Memphis here. No such area called The Curve exists today. Yellow Fever decimated this city. There’s a cemetery here with a section of unmarked graves, because people were dying as such a mass rate, there was no time to identify the bodies or have any sort of tombstone. So proud Ida came here! Ida B. Rising! Lemoyne-Owen College is still in operation, an all-black institution that has stood strong.

I absolutely love these videos. I live in Canada so I had never heard this story. Until the recent grave discoveries, I had no knowledge of the Catholic school system and what they did to indigenous people. It breaks my heart to learn about these travesties as an adult, but never learning this in my youth- makes me feel shameful, like our school systems did us a great disservice. If we forget our history, we're bound to repeat it. Not only that but we become ignorant to the ancestral discrimination faced by those around us. The stigma that holds over people, that we're just naively oblivious to. Bailey, if you have room to add some stories about Canadian history, I'd love to know more. Or maybe there are resources that can be shared, for our own learning?

I actually learned about this in school but it was grazed over so quickly when there was so much more to learn! Our schools shouldn’t be so afraid of teaching kids about the horrible things that happen in history. This way maybe we would have a more understanding and compassionate society. Plus, it would probably make people more cautious about potentially repeating the bad parts of our history. Ida’s story could have inspired so many more people if it was truly taught in school.

I’m amazed that so many of us didn’t know about her. She was really an inspiration of the highest degree. I will definitely be looking for more docs on her, and I hope she starts to get the national attention she so deeply deserves.

Thank youfor sharing Ida's sory. I have never heard of her before. Love her boldness in a time when it was so dangerous to be black and bold. ugh why are people so evil? How do you cross the line from seeing humans as things. I will never understand.

Thank you for telling Ida's story. What an inspiration she is! I'm a white woman, and I feel that African American people need more people like her to fight for them. I can't stand prejudice!

I've always known of her, but not in such detail. I got the chills everytime I read her quotes. She was well articulated, and blunt. Even now that's a refreshing quality in people! Great video Bailey!

Bailey you are truly an amazing person. I have recently binge watched ALL of your content and I talk about your dark history content all the time with other people (basically spreading the knowledge you shared). I know its hard work finding all this data but keep doing what you do we all truly appreciate it.

I learned Ida B. Wells’ name in school, but they only ever mentioned her work as a suffragette. It’s so important to recognize the entirety of history and it is incredibly telling that, in a case where there are MANY first hand accounts available in writing, this part of our history isn’t taught. The past couple of years I’ve been working on learning about the history of my specific area and it’s heartbreaking. There was a huge lynching that involved white people breaking into a jail here. There’s so, so many things about my town that I had no idea about. I’ve also read up more on local tribes and other history. I highly recommend it for everyone. The things I’ve learned are truly astounding. (Also went to our town museum for the first time and there are 2 cats that live there, which isn’t related but was a wonderful surprise). The museum didn’t have a section on our towns racist history, or a section on an incredibly famous black poet from here, but they had an entire area just about cookie cutters??? I’m hoping I can help change that because white comfort should never outweigh black suffering. Learn and help others learn because, otherwise, history is just gonna keep repeating itself over and over.

I've never heard about Ida before. I'm so glad you took the time to tell her story. Wow! This woman deserves so much more recognition. Her name should be a least second to Susan B. Anthony when they are teaching about the suffrage movement in school. It should be illegal for the curriculum to not include her. Also the fact that she was in the picture at the front of the march, why was she never pointed out. That picture was probably crossed my path in school, but not once did they mention her name or point her out. Just wow!
