Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. If a product is dangerous, but it still sells well, is it really that dangerous? Um, yes, yes it is. In today's episode, we talk all about it by focusing on one company in particular: Johnson & Johnson. J&J has routinely put sales over people’s lives. “But why?” you may ask. Because money talks, baby! Let’s get into the Dark History of Johnson & Johnson. And great, now I’m on another hit list.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History.

One of the problems with homes for older folk is there is a nursing shortage. I talked recently with someone who worked in one and she had about 40 patients each day ( not to split with other nurses…just for herself). Although intentional abuse should never happen, sometimes neglect is not from lack of trying. One of the best things that can happen is for more funding to nursing schools and for those schools to admit more people.

In 2011, my friend died of ovarian cancer at just 24 years old. She used baby powder for thigh chafing. 2 years ago her mother died of cancer as well. She was genuinely the kindest person I have ever known and the thought that this might have been connected hurts so much.

My aunt used it for years and years (or a product in it by this company). We lost her at 35 to o Ovarian Cancer. They used to use it on surgical gloves and it caused more scar tissue (possibly worse) in surgical patients. I know, I have it from a surgery…a specialist who uses steroids etc to treat it no surgically (through trigger point injections) to break it up told me about it. Always tell people you are allergic to talc so it isn’t used in gloves (other products) used if you land in the hospital/have surgery.

Talc really is in so much, especially in cosmetics and personal care items. When my kiddo was a baby, I used a cornstarch based baby powder to avoid the talcum based baby powder. I also don't use eyeshadow if I see talc or mica as an ingredient, because of how toxic those ingredients can be, especially being on the eyes. You should/could do a full episode on the dark history of the unregulated cosmetic industry by focusing on certain ingredients that have been proven harmful, such as talcum and mica. I remember hearing about harmful ingredients in lipstick in the late 90s when I was a teenager. Apparently a lot of companies still use those same harmful ingredients in lipstick.

Yes and why do European countries ban all of these chemicals yet they are in huge amounts in ours ? And if you buy the knockoff type stuff on Amazon or it her companies like wish the levels of lead are insane. I did testing for a cosmetic company and we tested our products against the knockoffs sold on Amazon. The results were shocking !!! Such high levels of lead and other chemicals that they could cause direct harm within the time of use of the product and also they can cause serious damage to a child if they got ahold of it. Made me think of all the kids who get caught with their mamas lipsticks :/ oh and red is the number one color for the lost amount of lead. The darker and brighter the makeup the worse the chemicals :/

Sorry for what you endured! But there are *always* risks to every medical procedure and device. If there was a cover-up or gross negligence, that’s one thing. I have worked for several medical device companies, and there is another side to the story.

What’s so funny to me about J&J (specifically for their baby line. Not the surgical side) Is that poor people have always been using corn starch as a friction reduction and trying agent. Especially when it came to babies and the elderly! And since cornstarch is so inexpensive and readily available, especially in comparison to the commercialized products- many poor people never picked it up and stuck with what they knew. 🤷🏼‍♀️ As a nurse- I would have loved to see generational cancer rates with those at the poverty line if they weren’t exposed to environmental risks (home location and work conditions specifically). Because they were doing things the old fashioned way and didn’t typically use commercialized products that contained large amounts of carcinogens.

Hmm... This got me thinking... My aunt died of lung cancer 13 years ago, she herself was a doctor and had never smoked so it kinda came out of nowhere. Then it was speculated that a facility she had worked at as a cleaner while studying had asbestos in it, and that had caused the cancer. But now I'm wondering if J&J's babypowder was something she had used when my cousins were babies, so in like early 90's...

Y’all! I’m literally pregnant right now. I had gallstones and was in the hospital for a couple days. I was on tylenol every 8 hours and have taken it intermittently since(1 month) for gallbladder attacks( I get pain, fever and chills). This has been awful news and I’m really sick of pharma saying something is okay even though they know it’s not. I feel like it’s pretty obvious when pregnant women have to avoid all the medicine available for humans. So, if it can hurt a pregnancy, what are all these otc brands subtly doing to us over time? 🤷‍♀️😬😬

THOSE LIERS AT JOHNSON&JOHNSON!!!! Thank you again for covering such a period s*it of a company (because period s*its are horrid). I hate how hard it is to find anything, even tampons, that don't contain harmful chemicals. And these companies know they contain harmful components, but don't give two s*its about it because they all have holdings in the pharmaceutical and medical industries, too. Three things, today's baby powder is 100% corn starch, the vaginal mesh was used for a hernia repair in 2009, I spent January and February of 2010 at Cleveland Clinic for "revisions" caused in my abdomen when the mesh migrated. The final surgery involved cutting out all the infected muscle and pulling muscle that was supposed to be holding the bottom of my abdomen up and sewing it in an attempt to close the area. When the Drs did this, they accidently sewed a nerve into the incision. 12 years later it is still causing horrendous pain. Sorry about the rant. The third thing I want to say is, Bailey you are amazingly beautiful, please don't let Drs inject and sculpt your face. You don't need any revisions.
