Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Today, we are going to talk about the incredible story of Jazz, how America fell in love with it, how the Federal Government wanted to destroy it and how the genre’s most famous name, Billie Holiday, became public enemy #1.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.
You can find Dark History podcast on Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, and every Thursday here on my KZfaq for the visual side of things.

Bailey, I'm so pleased you correctly credited Buddy Bolden as the "father" of jazz. I was friends with Don Marquis, who wrote the seminal book on Bolden, during his writing of the first edition, in the mid to late 70s. I even have a signed and dedicated copy of it. Your research is right on!!!

They ruined Billie Holiday and definitely tried to do the same to Eartha Kitt who literally just spoke out against the war while invited to the White House (apparently, her remake made the First Lady cry 🙄). Josephine had to move to Paris to perform! It’s almost as if they hated Black women who were outspoken or strong, fearless.

I feel like the world learned about the trauma of Billie Holiday when her movie came out on Hulu. It’s aptly named “The United States vs Billie Holiday”…. Strange Fruit is one of the most prolific pieces of music to ever exist, and I feel like the civil rights movement would’ve suffered if Billie didn’t speak out in the best way she could.

For real pop culture tells an incredible story. Just looking at popular songs of the era you're examining and digging around them even a little bit gives a pretty accurate snapshot of the social political and economic climate of the times. You see it over and over in all kinds of art, but I think music especially has such power over our history.
@lynnefromthelake

@@katiemechenbier4172 I think you nailed the historical significance that music plays in American History. It's not just Jazz, per se. Look at Ragtime, Blues and even Rock and Roll. One of my favorite examples of music and morality crashing headlong is Jerry Lee Lewis. I absolutely love him and he could have been Huge (capital H); he married his underage cousin (arguably the dumbest move ever in the history of music) and he was shut down. Talent or no, he busted his career.

Billie was the f'in bomb. Period. JFK was an addict among others of that era. And musicians have been scapegoats since the dawn of time. Music has saved my life. Many times over. It makes me so sad, and probably makes Saint sad too, that Billie had to die the way she did. Though she gave birth (in a sense) to so many incredible female musicians. One of my favorites (of oh so many) is Etta James. If you don't know her music, check it out. One of the things about these women following Billie is, they also left this world without fanfare. Such a travesty. So always remember to support (tip, buy merch, etc.) the live performers you admire. Some of the greats of music have died penniless and could not even afford burial. I have known more than one. Music is the long line to the soul.

@@Rox1SMF What a shame that your dad died young, I'm sorry. And that you didn't get all the stories that I'm sure he had. How exciting to me to have been embroiled in all that energy and ferocity of the clubs. Jazz begat blues, blues begat rock and roll; after that, it was all over but the cryin'! I raised a bluesman, who would play his harp in his carseat starting about the age of 2. He toured Europe a couple of times in his teens; came home and announced he was going into the Coast Guard. I told him he would be the most popular guy on the ship. LOL!

Music is one of those few UNIVERSAL languages which is why jazz took everyone by storm. It wasn't about Billie. It was about her performing Strange Fruit. That's it. That's all. The song made America look bad on a worldwide stage, and the Initial Clans (FBN, FBI, CIA, etc.) couldn't have that. Had she agreed to stop singing it, they would've left her alone and told her as much! She refused, and we know how it ended. It's (the reason behind her harrassment and arrests by the federal government) been told in several books and movies about her life. Another great installment of Dark History, Bailey! Thanks for telling the truth about American history because it's been so whitewashed that the truth's almost completely left out of what's taught nowadays. Happy Holidays to you and yours! 🎄🎄🎄🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤

This was too interesting to me. I had an uncle and aunt who played jazz back probably about the thirties in New Orleans. He played sax and she was a singer. My mom always wanted to visit him there but was much younger than him and he would try to dissuade her from going there. I wonder if he had one of those cards. She died this year and had alot of memorabilia. I don't remember seeing one of the cards. The sad thing is, he killed himself in about 1960. His wife killed herself 2 years later and they had a son. My cousin Bobby who as it turned out was a phenomenal drummer. I was born in 61 and don't remember my aunt and uncle, but we grew up with their son. He was always there on holidays as my mom took him in as her own. It was a sad life for all but it always blew me away how talented they all were.. I think there was a story there that will never be found out.

I've loved jazz for so long. Thank you for doing this. I've always found it difficult to get any real information until the last few years. Can you please do a dark history episode on the history of nursing? For example, a lot of women tried for witchcraft were actually what we would consider these days as nurses or midwives? It wasn't until Florence Nightingale that patients were fed, or even changed the bed linen between each person. Could you imagine? You have a huge nurse fan base, here in Australia at least. You definitely kept us all sane the last few years.

I was fortunate enough in my undergrad to have an awesome music history professor. We did a whole unit on Jazz music (which normally would be lumped in with the rest of early 20th century experimental music). I remember learning about (and listening to) "Strange Fruit." The entire class was SILENT. She then told us that our homework was to find cultural parallels between when that piece was composed/performed and modern day. The sad truth is, when it comes down to it, we as a nation have not changed at all. All that to say that my professor then challenged us music majors to make the world better. She taught us that historically, musicians and artists have a lot more sway over society than we give ourselves credit for. We can make a difference. Thank you, Bailey, for sharing this particular dark history.

@@moondust1992 I would use a more culturally based research based approach. I know that teachers today have plates that are more than full and the curriculum that districts approve are often times more and more of the same ol' vs more culturally accurate occurrences. I know it can be challenging and can take a lot of time. However it can be done. My child was fortunate to have a teacher that did this and I live in a tiny Podunk town in the Midwest drowning in white privilege. It's fun to also engage the kiddos by challenging them to do the research and have them provide their sources. Prepares them for possible college and teaches them how to look for information. So cool that Baily has this platform and such cool conversations can be had!
