Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Today, we are going to talk about what happens when capitalism intersects with the prison system. Here’s a hint: a whole lotta people get hurt and a small amount of people get super rich. Welcome to the Private Prison industry. It’s disgusting..
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.
You can find Dark History podcast on Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, and every Thursday here on my KZfaq for the visual side of things.

Y’all should actually print the dark history book and sell it for merch. Make a sized replica of the book used in the videos and fill it with the scripts from each episode at the end of the year. They’d be entertaining and educational and you could release a new volume each year like entertaining historical encyclopedias

I'm a lawyer in Louisiana, and there could be an entire book on the state of privately owned prisons here ... really, more like an encyclopedia series of the prisons for profits here ... one small example, in East Carroll Parish, there's a prison there that also operates as the local jail. People from Baton Rouge get sent up there when the jail in Baton Rouge overflows. Because the women's wing only functions as a local jail and holding facility for other parish jails, it isn't under Department of Corrections rules. There are times when they've gone without power or running water for days and the food is literally delivered in crates marked FDA condemned. Because the DOC rules don't apply to them, they aren't required to have a back up generator, nor are they required to feed anything nutritious ... people would come back from there malnourished because unless their families sent them money, they were SOL on food. Oh, and they don't even provide basic necessities like underwear or bras. If you can't buy those, you're also SOL. its absolutely disgusting...and these are people who haven't even been convicted of anything yet. Some of them are even sent there for two to three months for missing court on a speeding ticket. Like I said...a whole series could be written about the state of things here, but the bottom line is no one really cares. At least not enough to make a difference.

The prison story really reminded me of a specific thing that Belgium (specifically Brussels had) There was a time here (1958 so not even long ago!?) where you could go to a "Zoo" where they kept POC in cages like they were animals that you could feed bananas and pet their heads (It was called Expo 58). It would be really nice if you did a Dark History episode on Belgium and also their part in the Genocide of Congo, it is considered one of the "biggest" genocides in our history with over 3 Million deaths and estimated over 10 million victims overall yet it's a genocide that not many people know off. Having a genocide in our history that happened so recently that is not spoken about to this day makes my heart hurt and it would be amazing to hear you cover the story because it's so much to unpack. Bailey, it means so much that you use your platform to talk about important topics. Please consider looking into the troubled teen industry--many residential centers and 'schools' claim to be nonprofits yet their administrators mysteriously make upwards of $500k/year. I know someone that’s in a private prison right now, and it’s seriously shocking what they get away with. He’s also in Florida, so it’s even worse. Everything is SO expensive too. When you add money on the phone, they take $5, so you always need to put way more on. They make A LOT of money.

This is my favorite one yet. When you have had friends and family in prison you realize how crooked the prison system really is. It’s strictly a “for profit” system like you said. There’s no “rehab” or any focus on improving the behavior that got an inmate where they are. It’s unfair and disgusting. Unless you have a life sentence, I believe that you deserve to be rehabilitated.

This is amazing! I'm glad someone is talking about this. While I haven't been to a prison, I was convicted by the feds on a very questionable case where I was ordered to repay some money I'd received. Long story short, they found an equally bunk way to violate my probation and threaten me with 25 years in prison or to accept being on house arrest. Mind you I had no criminal history whatsoever besides this white collar situation that could have been seen as utter BS but I digress... Anyway. The monitor on my ankle started off a storm of physical ailments including rashes all over my body, swollen joints, burning blisters inside my mouth and even on my scalp. But they assured me the device was completely safe. I struggled through that for a year where I wasn't even allowed to step foot out my front door if it wasn't for work or medical or religious services. Me. A Grandma with two college degrees and no history of crimes, addictions or anything nefarious. Anyway, after I was done with all of that debocle I started researching the devices and of course found out that they have caused major health issues for many people but the company that makes them pays billions in lobbying to get permission to get these things on as many people as possible. Basically the devices are owned by private prison companies who push to get prisoners on house arrest because it's a bigger money maker. Turns out the courts have ordered they're a violation of civil rights so no judge will order them BUT if you agree to waive a hearing (because you've been threatened with 25 years) then it's hunky dory. The feds are criminals as well as the DOJ. They're worse than street thugs.
