I'm a tad late to the party with this comment, However, I think I may be of some assistance. Having worn many different types of historic armor (both hard & soft), I believe you will find that an articulated, rigid, breast & back plate formed out of simple plastic pickle barrel will serve you nicely as it is lightweight, flexible, and extremely cut, abrasion, impact, and puncture resistant. Though it is a little more bulky, thickness wise, it more than makes up for it in it's added impact resistance! (Baseball bats & blunt force weapons are just as deadly and easily available as knives) It's been a while, but we used to get 55 gal. pickle barrels for between $10-$20. They washed out, sent free, with just baking soda and water & can be easily hand formed, DIRECTLY. onto the torso/ body part of the wearer with nothing more than two layers of sweatshirt, a pair of welding gloves, and the help of a friend. To get the plastic to malleable temp. simply take the pattern (several avail on line), trace it on the barrel, cut it out with a jig saw, and place it on an old cookie sheet in an 215 deg. oven for a few min. till the existing curve begins to relax. Once the plastic starts to relax and flatten it self out, simply pull it out with the welding gloves and press form it on the person wearing the 2 sweatshirts. Best part is that most patterns avail on the net will also have some basic instructions to help align the separate pieces and connecting straps, and if the molding/ forming of the plastic is a little off, the piece can be reformed simply by repeating the heating process! If you are truly set on creating semi flexible armor, may I suggest you ck out Robert Murray-Smith's work here on YT dramatically enhancing the structural properties of plastics and other materials by adding homemade Graphene in small amounts to their construction/mixtures. You can find his Ch. simply by searching his name Robert Murray-Smith. Hope these ideas will help. :)

Very interesting projects. Perhaps you could show some idea of how the inserts would work in a jacket, and calculate how heavy the final product would be. Would it also be somewhat bullet proof with all the Kevlar? Good Luck with the development of resins etc, be careful about exposure to fumes.

Your really onto something brother! Always amazed of the minds here on KZfaq! Be thinking your the only one with a ideal and boom you find out your not alone. I too been working on a protection project for DIY Body armor to stab proof armor. Could save lives as well as yours. I do agree using ballistic nylon or better,Cordura nylon. Kevlar is good but Dyneema will have no gaps. Though Kevlar might it easy for absorbing the rubber mixture into it filling the gaps which window when stabbed with pointy objects like needles and a ice pick. Ballistic Nylon has a tighter weave to catch the more pointy objects. I would have that as your first line then the more cushioned last. I've been looking into material that would absorb impact where you the wearer will not feel the impact or trauma. I heard of liquid armor absorbing but have not though of Silly putty. I though of Clay. Gotta think friction makes heat so gotta add a stopper for friction. So coating of something that is heat repellent would be a good addition to your project. All in all great work and Keep going. This has inspired me to continue my project as well.

Try 700um silica suspended in glycerin then use isopropyl alcohol to make the putty a liquid and then bake it in an oven after impregnation the fabric with the liquid at around 100° untill the alcohol evaperates off. It makes a very strong STF and can be applied to denim or kevlar and maintains the the flexibleness of the fabric used also you'd only need one layer to stop a knife. If you use the Cut-Tex Pro fabric you have a very light weight stab proof fabric. Then use recycled sheets of D30 non newtonian foam motorcycle armor (it's flexible and really good at stopping impact) behind the fabric and vuala light seight flexible and comfortable stab proof armor. I'm the dude working on the halo inspired composite armored exoskeleton.

Amazing video! I actually made my own based on your design. I used very fine polyester fabric in combination with very fine steel wire mesh in the middle, the holes of the steel wire mesh are only 1mm. Maybe you should give it a try it is absolutely knife-proof! And stays flexible as well. I hope you try it for a future video!

hello my friend, i tried 16 layers cheap fireproof fiberglass (15 euros 1,5m x 1,5m greek price) and i laminated them with silicone glue. i tried slug bullet from 20 meters and it did not penetrate the armor. i dont know about other guns or pistols because i dont have anyother, but i found it surprisingly good. it is flexible also. thank you.

This is truly genius you should be a working for a military armor company. Something to consider: Your test is weapon vs target placed against a solid object. In actual circumstances that would be the absolute worst possible scenario for a strike. Akin to getting curb stomped or beheaded on a chopping block. Normally people have some give when struck. For instance the most common pose: standing, wearing armor like this there would not even be the slightest hint of damage to the victim. You should test your armor on a target mounted on a stiff spring or something to get an idea of what protection it provides in normal circumstances.

Great project, I'd recommend supporting the back of your projectile test target, for consistent angle and energy transfer. The crossbows squared to the test target could test spike penetrations with lathed points. Powdered ceramics or carbide metals could make an interesting surface powder coat ( not sure how well that would cure but it will damage testing implements

Really for knifeproof torso armor just a metal chest plate under a hoodie would be just as concealed and protective. Then take some of the stuff you used in your armor hat and make some armguards. That way you can block blunt impact attacks

When you're willing to put Kevlar in you might as well get some uhmwpe, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene, plates and make a coat of plates/brigandine type lining. Should do well. shear thickening fluid is a good idea.

Did you try incorporating any felt layers? felt is more stab resistant because the points can't just just push the yarns in the weave aside.

A German company named Zeigler Makes safety shirts out of very strong rings, with very strong welds. Like VERY strong. The blunt force is one thing to deal with but not likely to be able to stab through that stuff 🤔

have you thought about adding chicken wire? coating the whole thing with a final coat of resin? you need to upgrade and try a spear next. make the tip of the spear a bowie/rambo knife

i would be interested to see how well your armor performs against a broadhead, at 150lb i doubt it would stop it, but what about 90, 80, 50lb small crossbows? with a broadhead even 50lb is deadly

Paper & pva glue layers make super pikecrete , 10mm would stop some stabs potentially ? your bullet proof glass was excellent btw !

That's awesome man, quick question about your testing... wouldnt a soft backing be a better test? I mean the stab proof fabric will be basically hanging off your body, and humans are squishy so I assume it would absorb more impact resulting in an even smaller stab wound, and the way your stabbing down onto your work bench is not the best angle for attacking someone. So I think it's a smashing success, great job brother

12min..even if the blade gets through it wouldn't injure from a few mm poking through, id go as far to say a full ten mill of blade passing through wont be fatal...id trust & wear that test piece

Your stab test is actually too robust - no real life stab attack would generate the forces of slamming the blade to a dead stop against a solid surface - so the armour is probably better than your test suggests. :-)
