Loved how you described The Bonehunters as a coming-of-age book because it’s always going to be a rite-of-passage book in my mind. That was neat how they learn more about who they are or what they’re standing for along with a lot of questions and uncertainty. Loved hearing your thoughts even though you broke my heart at times with things you disliked that I loved. 😅 That’s just how it goes for a series like this. I don’t think any two people have the same exact experience with Malazan, and I’m sure rereading this series will be illuminating and incredible!

Thanks! I’m convinced that a lot of my lower ranked books are because I just missed things, as I’m not as acquainted with themes and analysis as you are. This series has taught me a lot already about theme and talking about them with you and others as well as hearing everyone discuss them has been quite illuminating. This series definitely has changed how I read in a positive way and I love it

That’s a great thing about this series. I am looking forward to rereading HoC eventually since it was so low. The main thing that made it so low for me was . Spoilers . The anti-climactic ending that I didn’t understand. Also the first fourth with Kara’s was a drag for me. I like Karsa a bit more now that I know his entire story and I understand some of the plot elements a little bit more now.

love the vid, my list would almost be the reverse order, RG on the bottom and TtH on top with the three Seven Cities books filing out the top four.

I haven’t dived into Bakker yet, but in the next year or two, I plan on it. Dust of Dreams is underrated, but i think people don’t like it because it’s book 9 in a series

@@burton1ify shadows of the Apt is great in a different way, more about advancement and what it does to society and war. Honestly right now I'd have to go with: (I don't dislike any of these, even my "least favourite" is still pretty good) 10. Reaper's Gale - this was my first Malazan book after a 6 month break, can see it improving on the re-read. 9. Dust of Dreams 8. Gardens of the Moon 7. Memories of Ice - It's only as low as it is because this took me the longest to read. 6. Toll the Hounds - I can see this as a favourite on the re-read, again I think my 6 month break kinda hindered me in a way. 5. Deadhouse Gates 4. House of Chains - I know people don't like the ending, but for me it worked. I think we needed it after MoI. 3. The Crippled God - My favourite ending to a Fantasy series I've read, though there are others that could give it a run for its money *cough* LPQ *cough* 2. The Bonehunters - THE SIEGE OF Y'GHATAN!!! 1. Midnight Tides - I just love the Shakespearean nature to this, as well as the dynamics with the 2 sets of brothers, I loved it.

Firstly: congrats on finishing! This was recent right? TtH and Mt are top of the list for me reread wise. I didn’t get the Shakespearean tragedy vibes until Reaper’s Gale with good ole Rhulad, which is one reason that book didn’t hit. I think there’s a lot I’ve read recently that will help me appreciate Mt more, specifically

@@PonderingsOfPete Thanks Pete, I finished the series back in April, pretty much read RG through CG back-to-back. Oh man, Rhulad. One of the most tragic characters I've ever read. For me I see RG improving the most on a re-read cuz there's still a lot to love about that book, i loved the stuff with Red Mask, the Beck subplot.

Interesting ranking. My order moved around while reading and then moved around again on a reread. And might change again next time. I didnt care much for Toll either. It just didn't jive with me. It and Dust, and RG, go to some some dark places so saying you 'enjoyed them' is problematic. Interesting comment on CG. I am not sure what I was expecting or wanting either but would rate it higher. I really enjoyed Acendency. But you really have to like Malazan for Karkanas. They are just written differently but the lore is fascinating.
@PonderingsOfPete
@PonderingsOfPete 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s problematic to say I enjoyed something that went dark places. Maybe I’m using the word “enjoy” a little flippantly, but I’m not using it in a sadistic, “I love suffering and pain” sort of way. When I say I enjoyed a book, I mean that I enjoyed the experience of reading the book. Take Beak’s arc for example. When I was reading his story, there was no joy. I cried at his death. But looking back, I appreciate and admire the mastery of the story that Erikson wrote. I appreciate and take joy from the fact that someone could elicit such deep emotions from me in so few a word count. I enjoyed the experience of reading, not the experience of the character. So I don’t see it as problematic to say I enjoyed books like DoD and RG because I take joy from the writing, the emotions I feel, the questions I ponder, the experience I have. I do not take joy from the characters’ pain and suffering and loss.
@EricMcLuen
@EricMcLuen 2 жыл бұрын
@@PonderingsOfPete Sorry, I know exactly what you were trying to say. Problematic might have been the wrong word as the word itself has taken on another more charged usage. It is like do you really enjoy watching Saving Private Ryan or Schindlers List? I don't know really how to describe the experience. But Beak, the Chain of Dogs and Karsa are a lot different on reread since you already know how those stories end, you can focus on the story itself more.
@PonderingsOfPete
@PonderingsOfPete 2 жыл бұрын
@@EricMcLuen I actually haven’t watched either of those because my movie experience is severely lacking. I’m looking forward to focusing on the themes a little more in the second read through as well

@@EricMcLuen Oh, gotcha. I actually haven't see neither of those movies because my movie experiences have been lacking.
